A NOTE FROM THE CHAPTER PRESIDENT
By: Cameron McDougal (2012), Chapter President and Archon Councilor
Dear Psi Graduate Brother,
I write to give you a brief update on how this semester has
gone so far for the undergraduate chapter. One of the
highlights of this semester has
been to welcome so many of
you back to the chapter house
for Homecoming, Pig Dinner,
and the Monon Bell game.
We look forward to seeing
many more of you back in the
near future. Despite some
recent criticism, our college is
radiating with positive energy.
Times like these are opportunities for brothers to advance
and renew the common bond
that we share and Psi Chapter
has certainly taken advantage
of this.
We were able to recruit 25
incoming freshman this past
year, the largest pledge class
on campus. I am proud to
report that all 25 men are still
in their pledgeship and are

making a strong push to the
finish line as we prepare to
enter finals week. The pledge
class has performed exceedingly well in representing our
chapter. After placing fifth in
chapel sing, they banded together and dominated the rest
of the homecoming competitions, placing second to Phi
Kappa Psi by only one point.
A couple of weeks ago, they
placed first in the Alma Mater
Sing Competition and have on
their own, organized multiple
service events, pledge class
retreats, house improvement
projects, and scholarship
plans in order to better define
their pledgeship. More than
1/3rd of the class plays a varsity sport and the class as a
whole has added dynamic,
talent, and energy to our intramural competition (we
placed second to the faculty
last year, and are currently in
second). Kirk Miller
(1981) has a son, JT, who is
pledging the house, carrying
on the long Psi tradition of
Sires and Sons. Most groups
of men would enjoy similar
successes when things are
going well, but the ability of a
group to keep composure
during a challenge is what
really defines the group. The
pledge class has gained the
attention of the Dean’s Office
and President’s Office with
their responses to challenges.
The deans are quick to praise
the chapter leadership concerning the pledge class’s
actions, and this class is leading itself. They have an impressive notion of how and

Bender (2012), and Jordan

such as Tony Kanaan raise over
$120,000 for Riley Children’s Hospital. These brothers helped to organize
and manage the Indy Racing League’s
annual charity fashion show and auction held in downtown Indianapolis
over the summer. Since arriving at
Wabash this fall, service events such as
highway clean-ups, Habitat for Humanity, food drives, and blood drives
have been regular occurrences.
Many of our graduate brothers have
enjoyed successes and honors that we
as a chapter are very proud of. Brother
Clay Robbins (1979) was awarded
the “Distinguished FIJI” by the Archons this past spring. This award is
given annually to a brother in the Fraternity who exemplifies and defines
what it means to be a Phi Gam. Brother
Dave Lewis (1981) was elected to the
Board of Trustees of Wabash College
this past summer, joining the seven
other Psi brothers on the board. Most
recently, Joe Bevelhimer (1986)
was inducted into the Wabash College
Athletic Hall of Fame. Joe was the
kicker/punter for the football team and
still holds the record for the number of
points scored. He was also the assistant football coach for a number of
years. I speak on behalf of the undergraduate chapter in saying that we are
very proud of Clay, Dave, and Joe, and
all of you who have undoubtedly
formed Wabash College’s most distinguished alumni group.
The chapter has had the privilege of
welcoming many guest speakers this
past semester. In September, Bill
Martin (MS State 1975), the Fraternity Executive Director, visited Psi
Chapter on positive terms. We had a
nice dinner at the chapter house and

he spoke about the direction of the Fraternity and what being a Phi Gam means to
him, a very good experience for our
pledges. President and Mrs. White of Wabash College also joined us for dinner that
night, as well as Dean of Students Mike
Raters and former Archon President Bill
Miller (Indiana 1962, Purdue 1996).
Events like these are evidence of the outstanding relationship the undergraduate
chapter has with Phi Gamma Delta International and Wabash College.
One of the great traditions of Wabash is a
weekly Chapel Talk. These talks are held
every Thursday in the Chapel and a guest
speaker is invited to talk about a topic of
his choosing. The highlight of the semester
for guest speakers was having President
White give a “FIJI-only” Chapel Talk on
the morning of Pig Dinner. The President
condition, but there are
areas where we still have much work to
do. I feel that these areas have been
identified, and that we have the right
people in the right places to accomplish
our goals. The graduate support that we
have in our Purple Legionnaire, Housing Corporation, and Board of Chapter
Advisors is unmatched in the Fraternity, and the numbers of graduates I
have seen come back this year and
show a vested interest in this chapter
reassures me that Psi Chapter is thriving. The undergraduate chapter is doing
an excellent job representing Phi Gamma
Delta, representing all of you. A unique
aspect of our Fraternity is that “Phi
Gamma Delta is not for college days
alone.” When you, as graduates, demonstrate your belief in our lifelong bond, it
inspires undergraduates to invest their
time and efforts into the Fraternity. A
four-year brotherhood during our undergraduate years is special, but not really
worth an investment. Psi Chapter is
more than a four-year commitment,
and I believe this is evidenced through
our graduate support.
I am very much looking forward to the
next year, as we continue our upward
momentum with both Wabash College
and the International Fraternity.

LETTER FROM THE PURPLE LEGIONNAIRE
By: Dr. Dan Rogers (Faculty Initiate 2006), Purple Legionnaire
Psi Chapter was very well represented
last August at the 162nd Ekklesia held at
the Phoenix, Arizona Biltmore. Both
Dudley Miller (President of the BCA
and Purple Legionnaire Emeritus) and I
attended, as did most of the 2009-2010
Chapter cabinet: Greg Schipp, Tyler
Wade, Kyle Bender, and Cameron
McDougal. While I attended sessions
for new Purple Legionnaires and IHQ
staff, our cabinet officers attended business meetings and voted on changes to
the fraternity bylaws and granted new
charters several new chapters of the fra-
ternity. Dudley Miller provided advice and
counsel for us newbies, networked with
very nearly everyone who attended, and
ensured that we always had sufficient
space pool-side.
Several important measures came to a vote
at the 162nd Ekklesia, including a revision
to the bylaws mandating that the AlcoholFree Housing Exemption be renewed annually. The Chapter will be working to
make sure the requirements and criteria
are met in a timely fashion. Greg Schipp
worked on a resolution honoring Coach
Dean Smith, and our cabinet members
actively debated changes to GPA requirements.
One of the most memorable events at the
162nd Ekklesia happened when Psi Chapter’s own Cameron McDougal was
elected by the full body to fill a two-year
term as undergraduate Archon. Cam
meets regularly with other members of
the Archonate (our National Board of
Trustees) on policy matters that affect the
fraternity.
PSI CROSS COUNTRY TEAM SOARS
By: R. Chet Riddle (2013), Corresponding Secretary
Fall 2010 was a landmark season for the
Wabash College Cross Country team finishing 13th in the nation, the highest team
placement Wabash has seen in nearly 20
years. The self proclaimed “Red Pack”
fielded a diverse and fairly young team
this year, graduating only two seniors, All
-American Seth Einterz and Phi Gamma
Delta’s very own Justin Allen. The Red
Pack was home to men from all across
campus. Phi Gamma Delta, though,
proudly stands at the apex of cross country running, with three of the seven national qualifying varsity squad members
and two other junior varsity athletes.
Senior Justin Allen from Hobart, IN, led
his teammates through high times and
low. Allen suffered a calf injury midseason that prevented him from competing in the NCAC conference meet. Despite
his set back, he still remained confident in
his teammates to come through for him.
The Little Giants snatched second place in
the NCAC championship meet falling
second to Allegheny, only to come back at
nationals and beat the gators by 41 points.
Allen exemplified his role as a team leader
by keeping his teammates motivated
throughout the long and difficult season,
even when he himself was injured. He
described his experience like this, “I tried
to lead by example by working hard in practice and keeping an optimistic outlook. Even
when I was injured, I was still present to
fulfill my role as a leader.” Allen attributes
some of his success on the cross country
course to lessons he has learned during his
time at Phi Gamma Delta, saying, “I viewed
the team as a brotherhood. Outside of practice, we spent time with each other building
team bonds which created strong team dynamics.” Allen placed 151st in all of NCAA
Div. III and next year plans on attending
medical school.
Junior Brian David, hailing from New
Milford, NJ, also battled against a hold over
injury from the previous track season, and
because of his dedication and summer training was able to work through it and earn the
third spot on the national team. David described his role on the team as two fold, “At
the start of the year, my goal was to by our
five man and get us to nationals, but after all
the summer training I put in, I was able to
come into season in much better shape, in
turn running faster, harder workouts and
putting us in contention for national placement.” The number five man is arguably one
of the most important members of the team
because he depicts the overall team score
that will make or break national qualification. David was able to step up to the task
and preformed better than his pre-season
goals to get his team to nationals. Just as
Allen was able to relate Greek life to athletics, David says he learned two vital
lessons from fraternity life that have
helped him on the cross country course.
The first is patience. “In fraternity life,
you have to see the big picture and must
prepare adequately for it. The same holds
true with cross country,” he said. The
second lesson is sacrifice. “Fraternity and
athletic life make you realize what things
on campus you can and cannot do. You
have to sacrifice some aspects of campus
involvement to benefit your brothers on
the team and brothers in the house.”
Brian placed 92nd in the Div. III NCAA
national Championships and is a rhetoric
major here at Wabash. He is looking forward to the upcoming track season where
he will compete in the 5,00 and 10,000
meters.
The Red Pack not only boasted men from
all across campus, but from every age
group. Freshman Jake Ponton from
Dyer, IN, finished out the team. He says,
“This cross country season really got my
goals in line. It gave me great motivation
for the years to come.” Ponton has large
shoes to fill not only on the course but in

PSI ASSOCIATION UPDATE
By: Rick Cavanaugh (1976), President of the Psi Association Board
The Annual Meeting of the Wabash College
Phi Gamma Delta Association, Inc. was held
on October 9, 2010. Psi Chapter's annual
Norris Pig Dinner followed that evening
with the largest Graduate Brother attendance in years.
We opened the Chapter House in August to
a massive mold infestation in the basement,
resulting in a quarantine of the basement
while the College worked to determine the
extent and nature of the infestation. The
College agreed to bring in an industrial hygienist to plan the remediation of the basement and its contents. After a thorough
inspection and UV filter installation on the
HVAC system, we were able to safely open
the 1st, 2nd and 3rd floors in time for
Freshman Saturday. The basement remained quarantined for most of the first six
weeks of the fall semester. Most of the
Chapter furniture in the affected areas was
successfully remediated; however, some of
the personal couches and rugs of brothers
that had been stored for the summer in the
basement were beyond remediation and
were removed by the remediation contractor. The Association offered some financial
assistance to the brothers who incurred
losses. Wabash College, our landlord, covered the costs of remediation of the basement and the Chapter property. The Association thanks Director of Facilities Dave
Morgan and Chief Financial Officer Larry
Griffith for their efforts to clean up the
mess. The Archives of the Chapter required
some special assistance to remediate the
artifacts, photos, paintings and other
memorabilia of Psi Chapter. The Association thanks Beth Swift, Wabash College
Archivist, Towner Blackstock
(Davidson 1994), Archivist for the Fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta, and Cameron McDougal (2013), then Psi Chapter Historian, for their assistance in restoring Psi's treasures.
I am pleased to report that all back federal
and state tax returns, which had not been
filed have been filed and the Board has
resolved all back tax issues with the Internal Revenue Service. The Association has
paid all taxes due the State of Indiana and
is working to resolve the amount of penalties and interest due on those returns. The
corporate status of the Association has
been reinstated and we are again in good
standing with the Indiana Secretary of
State Corporations Division. The finances
of the Association are on a sound footing
as we put the tax issues behind us.
The Board noted that the Chapter has been
working to improve House scholarship.
The Freshman and Chapter GPAs have
slipped from historic trends over the last
few semesters. In an effort to support the
Chapter's efforts to improve scholarship,
the Board voted unanimously to establish
an award for the brother in the sophomore, junior and senior class, who demonstrated the greatest improvement in semester GPA from the previous semester.
The International Fraternity has a AAA
award for freshman who earn a GPA of
3.0, which pays each recipient $250.
The Board approved awards of $260
Improved Scholarship. The first $250
awards were made in the Winter semester to Justin Allen (2011), Paul
Buescher (2012), and Chet Riddle
(2014).
The Association Board experienced the
departure of longtime member Brother
John Culley (1969). John's term expired in 2010 and with his intention to
retire from the College, he rotated off
the Board. We thank him for his years
of service to Psi Chapter. Ryan Poor
(1995) rotated off as President of the
Board of Chapter Advisors and was
elected to a 3 year term on the Association Board. Dudley Miller (1978) has
agreed to lead the Board of Chapter Advisors having rotated off as Purple Legionnaire. Brother Miller was succeeded by Dr. Dan Rogers (Faculty
Initiate 2006) as Purple Legionnaire.
In conclusion, your Association has been
actively supporting Psi Chapter. We
have worked to provide advice, program
support, incentives, and of course furnishings for Psi Chapter. When in
Crawfordsville, please drop by the chapter house and meet the brothers. We are
always looking for graduate brothers
interested in helping out, so please drop
me a note at eric.cavanaugh@dukeenergy.com if you are interested in serving the Chapter.

the classroom, considering the team has
an average GPA of 3.55, the fourth highest in the nation. The cross country team
proved to show Ponton what it takes to be
a successful Wabash man and he is proud
to have had the opportunity to “represent
the house on the national level along with
two other brothers,” he said. In addition
to the stresses of competition and class
work, Ponton also had to face the rigors of
pledgeship. Through effective time management, he was able to be very successful in
both the house and on the course. Ponton
plans on studying history or political science
at Wabash and is also looking forward to a
successful spring track season. Two of Ponton’s pledge brothers also competed on the
junior varsity squad, Cole Hruskovich and
Dalton Boyer putting the total number of
FIJI brothers and pledges at five.
The Little Giant cross country squad
achieved excellence in the 2010 season.
They did it at the hands of five brothers
and pledges of Phi Gamma Delta who
will proudly continue to represent both
their fraternity and college in the upcoming track and cross country seasons.
These harriers will continue the proud
running tradition that has been put in
place in the hallowed halls of Phi
Gamma Delta.

PLEDGE CLASS STRIVES FOR EXCELLENCE
By: Dustin Darnell (2014), Pledge Class President
I would first and foremost like to take
this opportunity to thank you all for the
support you give to the house and to
the institution. Without you, we would
not be able to continue the kind of lifestyle and education that we enjoy every
day, even with the absence of women!
With that out of the way, I can move on
to the introductions. My name is Dustin Durnell and I am the President of
the Pledge Class of 2014. I lead a strong
and large class of 25 pledges, who are
both academically gifted and athletically talented and who are all driven to
achieve great things at some point later
in life. Among these athletically gifted
are three members of the cross country
team, three baseball players, one basketball player, one football player, and
two pole vaulters. Of the academically
inclined, we have a Lily Scholar, numerous Top 10 and Top 20 scholarship
candidates, and as of midterms, we had
a pledge with a 3.9 GPA. This class is
not only dedicated on the field but in
the classroom as well and it is showing
on exams and on grade cards.
As far as pledgeship goes, our class has
come together in many ways and has
thoroughly grown as a whole. At any
point in during the day, you can walk
into a study room, the house library, or
the back living room and see a group of
pledges studying together in order to
ensure that all members of the pledge
class meet the needs of the fraternity. I,
myself, have worked with five of my
pledge brothers on a single assignment
for a class they were not all taking. It is
always an encouraging and comforting
notion knowing that if you ever need help,
you don’t have to rely on the brothers in
the house, but you can get it from your
own pledge brothers. It is because of this
thorough system of assistance and support
that many of the pledges are doing so well
with pledgeship and acclimating to the
school in general.
We have also accomplished many things
outside of just school work that have not
only shown our strength as a class, but
brought us together as a group. During the
late nights and long hours of Homecoming
Week, we found ourselves faced with the
daunting tasks of learning “Old Wabash”
for Chapel Sing, building a float, and crafting a banner to show the alumni what this
year’s FIJI stands for. In the end, we
placed a close second overall in the homecoming festivities, placing first in both the
float and banner. A solid month and a half
later, we were back at it as a class, in
preparation for Alma Mater sing. Faced
with stiff competition in Kappa Sig and
the other houses on campus, the FIJI
pledge class overcame the odds and won
the competition with flying colors. By
banding together, our pledge class has
created one of the tightest bonds in the
house and because of this we are successful in the classroom and on-campus.
These events have helped to strengthen us
as a class, however, the goal and main
focus of pledgeship is to get us acquainted
to the house and the brothers. Personally,
I have learned much about the history, the house, and the brothers of
the fraternity by just being around
“Through these teachings, I have learned that
our house is wellorganized and efficient
and has a lot of graduate
support that other
houses do not.”
them. However, it is always nice to
have the upperclassmen go the extra
mile to teach my comrades and me
about the inner workings. Through
these teachings, I have learned that
our house is well-organized and efficient and has a lot of graduate support that other houses do not. By partaking in events like Pig Dinner and
Homecoming Weekend, I was thoroughly impressed by the number of
graduates who returned to not only
campus, but to the FIJI house specifically. I have heard of graduate support, but to me, this was unreal. It
brought on a sense of pride that I may
someday be a part of such a great fraternity both on campus and internationally. I speak for the rest of my
class when I say the prospect of becoming a brother is both exciting and
invigorating. Hopefully, we get to
meet more of you on a personal level
someday in the near future and until
then, WABASH ALWAYS FIGHTS!
