Phi Gam’s across the state and the
University of Evansville community mourned
the death of John H. Schroeder (Wabash 1942)
in early April. After receiving his bachelor’s
degree from Wabash and his MBA from Harvard Business School, he began a career as an
entrepreneur of the highest caliber, founding
three plastic companies in his native Evansville and neighboring Henderson, KY, employing hundreds of people and making Evansville a capital of plastics molding and production. The embodiment of the value of service, Brother Schroeder used his largesse to
support various charities and non-profits, including the Evansville Museum and Goodwill
Industries.
Brother Schroeder was especially
generous when it came to the University of
Evansville. He will leave behind a legacy
marking him as one of the top five benefactors
in its 157 year history. He has been working
with UE since 1955 and began to serve as a
university trustee in 1964. He spearheaded
UE’s acquisition of Harlaxton College in
Grantham, England, and his family has been
integral in multiple construction projects, including a dorm and a business school that
bears their name.
Brother Schroeder’s influence has
been vital to the formation of Phi Gamma Delta on the UE campus. His presence as a trustee, his generosity towards the colony in our
early days, and his service as a legate during
the chartering of Epsilon Iota will ensure that
the Schroeder name will always be mentioned
proudly during pledge education sessions.
“There are a select group of graduates, Mr.
Schroeder included, without whom FIJI at UE
would not have been possible,” says first chapter president Chris Rafferty (Evansville 2001).
Beyond the invaluable role he played in our
founding, Brother Schroeder’s interest in the

activities of the chapter well into his 80’s was a
constant source of inspiration. “As an undergrad
at UE, and in my post-UE days, I always appreciated that such a leading figure in the UE and
Evansville community would take the time to
attend events hosted by teenagers and twentysomethings,” says Rafferty. “His presence at
our events made them feel special and important.” That presence will be deeply missed at
future Pig Dinner’s and our thoughts have been
with the Schroeder family since his passing.

Upcoming Changes in Events Schedule
The undergrads at Epsilon Iota always have a busy spring semester. In addition to Pig Dinner, the entire chapter
spends months preparing for Hot-Tub-a-Thon, around a dozen train continuously for Bike Race, the seniors, faced with the
terror of moving back home with their parents, are hunting for jobs, and the fickleness of the spring solstice means Spring
Break is a different week every year. A goal of the Graduate
Development committee was to add some predictability to

yearly events, but because of the annual schedule crunch,
some years, Pig Dinner is in February and others, it’s in April.
Therefore, beginning in 2012, Pig Dinner will be held in midOctober and the EI Open will be held in May. This will give
the undergrads more breathing room in their year by spreading events out, and it will allow the grads to plan on coming
back to Evansville at a routine couple of times every year.
Per the new schedule, after the upcoming EI Open in October,
the 2012 schedule will proceed with the EI Open in May and
the next Pig Dinner will not be until October 2012. We hope
adding stability to the schedule will encourage still more and
more graduates to make the trek back to our old stomping
grounds.
Register for the Upcoming Epsilon Iota Open
August 21, 2010. Nothing surprising at all happened. Sure,
the Epsilon Iota Open was held at Clearcrest Pines golf course, and all
right, we did raise nearly a thousand dollars for the undergrad chapter’s
emergency fund, but everything went exactly the same as it had in the
last few years. Several foursomes showed up with dreams of victory,
but once again, a group of Alpha’s consisting of Jeremy Tarr (EI 1998),
Scott Newman (EI 2000), Chris Rafferty (EI 2001), Jim Moryl (EI
2000), and Nick Carter (EI 2000) took home the trophies. 2011 might
be the year something of note happens at the EI Open, and it would be
a shame to miss that kind of history. Included with this newsletter is
the registration form for the 2011 EI Open on October 8. Take these
next few months to practice, save up for the newest golf club coated in
unobtainium or whatever, assemble a dream team of the best golf
scramblers in the Midwest, and bring the excitement back to Clearcrest.
The bards still sing of the famous five-hole overtime at the 2005 EI
Open, but they desperately need some new material.
\r\nLetter from the President
Brothers,
The undergraduates of
the Epsilon Iota Chapter recently
completed another very busy year.
The chapter continued its tradition
of excellence at this year’s University of Evansville Greek
Awards. The Epsilon Iota chapter
won awards for Leadership,
Scholarship, Community Service
& Philanthropy, and Social Interaction. Recent graduate, Brad
Kastrup, was named President of
the Year for his work to unify the
Greek community during his term
as Inter-Fraternal Council President.
Thank you to all of the
graduates that helped to make this
year's Hot-Tub-A-Thon a success.
We raised over $10,000 for Easter
Seals and the Evansville Rehabilitation Center. This donation was
far and away the largest raised by
any philanthropy on the UE campus this year, and the most ever
raised by Epsilon Iota. We could
not have done it without your
generosity.
This past spring semes-
ter, the chapter began to implement study hours for any brother
under a 3.0. The chapter is continuing to develop a scholarship program that will bring Phi Gamma
Delta to the top grade point average amongst the fraternities on
campus. We are currently seeking
out a faculty member to serve as a
scholarship advisor for the chapter. This individual would serve in
addition to the brothers’ department advisors and would have his
main focus be with the new pledges and those few brothers at or
below a 2.5 GPA.
Looking ahead to the
summer and the new school year,
we are making changes and improvements. The FIJI house has
been the site of construction this
summer. After a lot of help from
the Graduate Association, the
house now has new gutters installed on the side of the house as
well as new ceiling tiles in the
basement. The individual rooms
are also getting a fresh coat of
paint and drywall that has been
damaged over the years is being
repaired. Our Recruitment Chair,
Ryan Cramer, will be leading a
Recruitment Workshop in the
final days of summer vacation.
There has been a significant decrease in the attendance of the
summer workshop over the years,
and our hope is that by moving
the date closer to the start of
school, more of the chapter will
be in attendance. This year’s IFC
recruitment begins on September
10th. I look forward to reporting
to all of you how well the Epsilon
Iota chapter is after Passover.
Classes for the fall semester begin on August 25th. I
look forward to a great semester
and also working with you graduates to continue building Epsilon
Iota into the best it can be.
Fraternally,
Bryan Hamann
