HomecomingTT MadnessPrevoils
The last weekend of October saw a kind of craziness de
scend on the UC campus. The occasion was the annual Home
coming, with the theme of "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad
Campus." Chi Omicron of Phi Gamma Delta was not excluded
from this madness. The brothers "went crazy" in the effort to
host a successful homecoming.
This year's float was observed by several graduates to be the
"best ever." Apparently the judges felt so too, as the Fiji entry
was awarded with the 3rd Runner Up Trophy. The float,
named "The Madcatter's Tea Party," consisted of a monstrous
Bearcat, a rabbit, and Alice herself gathered around a teapot
which contained a Temple University Owl. With a little help
from the women of Zeta Tau Alpha and the persistence of
Don Strahler '80, the construction was the smoothest in
history.
The annual luncheon was another success, thanks to Marty
Morris '79. Over 80 people enjoyed a fine meal on the porch
as the parade passed in review. After the parade, angry mad
ness prevailed among Bearcat rooters as they were tied by
Temple 17-17.
The weekend was climaxed by the Homecoming Dance at
Tangeman University Center. "Stil l Crazy After All These
The Madcatter's Tea Party
Years" was the theme. The brothers and dates got crazy in
typical fashion.
It was a mad end to a mad weekend on a mad campus.

\r\nRegarding Rush.,
Dear Graduate Brother,
As the fall quarter draws to a close, we are eagerly antici
pating winter rush. We'd like to ask your help at one of our
functions. It offers such promise that I'm calling it the "Grand
Slam of Rush." The fun starts at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 7 with a
cocktail party at the house. From there we will journey to
Riverfront Coliseum to cheer on the Cincinnati Bearcats as
they take on their Metro 7 rivals, the Louisville Cardinals.
After the victory, we will all venture across the river to New
port to celebrate.
Please come and help us in our effort for a good rush. Prove
that Phi Gamma Delta in not for college days alone.

The Old Volcano
A New Volcano?
Dear Graduate Brothers,
While cleaning out an old file cabinet we came across the
first issue of the Bearcat Fiji, dated May 1969. The headline
article was entitled "Eruption on Cincy Campus." The story
related how the "Fiji Volcano" turned Greek Week on its ear.
Although the Fijis did not accumulate enough points to place,
the author wrote, "This means more power and spirit for next
year, because, 1 can assure you that helmets wOl be passed out
when the Fiji Volcano spews its lava once again."
Many brothers read that newspaper and particularly that
article with interest. We each saw a little of our own "erup
tion" in that story. We'd like to get you, the Graduates, as
involved in and as infomied of this modern "Volcano" as pos
sible. This improved Bearcat Fiji is an effort in that direction.
If you have any suggestions, news or complaints for this news
letter or Graduate Relations in general, please let us know.
Together, we can create a "Volcanic Eruption" of unprece

Dear Graduate Brother,
We hope that you like it! Brother/Editor Brad Metzger '81
In cooperation with Graduate Brother Bruce Ziegler '71 has
been working diligently to improve the Bearcat Fiji. We at Chi
Omicron think that it is another achievement to cross off our
list of goals. To update you on other accomplishments at Chi
Omicron; Fall rush turned out 6 energetic pledges whom I am
confident will bring new, strong ideas to this chapter. This
brings us to a size of 27, the largest since charter days. We are
presently 7th in intramurals, higher than we've been in the last
5 years. Our graduate support is slowly increasing with a num
ber of recent graduates returning for Fiji events. Improvements
have been made to the house (thanks to Graduate Brother
Chuck Butz). You may have noticed these during Homecom
ing. Chi Omicron is moving ahead to strengthen its stand at
U.C. As Graduate Brothers you are in a prime position to help
us move faster. With your knowledge and experience, you can
provide us with the tools to make Fiji number one at Cincin
nati. Stop by the house and join us on our way to the Top. .

Sport Report
Despite being saddled with the toughest schedule on
campus, Chi Omicron is making a determined effort towards
winning the all sports trophy.
In football, our 1-3-1 record misrepresented the quality of
the team. Losses were to the Phi Delts and the Sig Eps, who
made the playoff finals, and a fine Theta Chi team. Our vic

tory was an easy one over Alpha Sigma Phi, and Fiji battled
President
the Pikes to a scoreless tie.
In volleyball, our season tally (3-2) was again deceiving. Our
two defeats came from the Theta Chis and the Phi Delts, who
were playoff finalists. The Fijis garnered victories over the Sig
Eps, the Phi Kaps, and the Pikes.
In other sports this fall. Phi Gamma Delta has sparkled. In
free throw shooting, the Fiji team took 2nd place, with Dan
Horvath '79 winning all campus honors. Ben Baldwin '78 won
the handball singles and the team of Baldwin and Jeff Linkous
'80 made the finals of handball doubles.
Although we are the second smallest fraternity in size on
campus, we hold 7th position among the 18 organizations.

Guess who came to dinner fall quarter? None other than
Henry Winkler, the acting President of UC. Discussion ranged
from University policy to his personal interests. He even spoke
of his namesake, the Fonz on Happy Days.

Our Purple Legionnaire, Chip Harrell (Arizona '76) has
joined the list of recently married Fiji brothers in the Cincin
nati area. Others on the list include Nelson Evans, Doug Du-
mond, and Chuck Butz. Congratulations to all . . . Brother
Grant Swain '74 and his wife Sharon were blessed with a

future Fiji on the morning of Homecoming (October 29).
Perge, Brother Swain! . . . Brother Keith Mason '75 is now
employed at General Hospital as an administrative assistant
. . . Brother Dennis Hemmer '73 is the new Treasurer of the
House Corporation . . . Cheers to Brother Kevin Hopper '73,
who recently graduated from law school . . . Brother Ed

The Chi Omicron chapter is very fortunate to exist in an
area where many prominent Fijis take an active part in the
Jeff Linkous '80
community. An excellent example of a Fiji who actively serves
the community is Thomas B. Brush (Michigan '56). Tom was
elected to the Cincinnati City Council in 1973, and on Novem
ber 8th, he received his seat for another two years by being reelected.
Brother Brush ran a tough campaign and pointed to his past
performance on Council to win support. He devoted much of

his energy on Council taking the lead in initiating programs
benefiting the people of Cincinnati. Former Councilman
Charles Taft said that Tom was "not much of a politician, but
a great councilman."
The Chi Omicron chapter was honored by being able to
assist Candidate Brush in his re-election effort. Several weeks
before the election, Tom spent some time at the house talking
"politics." He asked for support from his Fiji brothers to help
post campaign signs. The response was favorable and the mem
bers here are proud to have been able to help a Fiji brother
serve his community.
Rick Werbylo '80
We almost forgot to mention another new face around the
house. Junior, a German Shepherd/Collie puppy hails from the
city dog pound. He replaces "Feej," who ran away over the
summer (we prefer to think of it as graduated). His interests
include chewing on anything in sight and knocking over
wastebaskets.
