April 17, 2009
On May 17, 2008, 11 men left the
comfort of college behind and entered
the professional world. The spring
2008 Phi Gam graduates of the University of Evansville are an eclectic
group, with degrees from the School of
Education, the School of Business, and
the School of Physical Therapy. They
have been groomed for success
through coursework and the leadership
oppurtunities afforded to them through
their careers in the Fraternity. While
the undergrads are losing these men
and their considerable skills, we graduates are gaining their talents, and we
hope we can utilize them to improve
both the chapter and our graduate organizations.

Great Time Had by All at Pig Dinner
Cambridge Country
Club was once again
the scene of reminiscing about the good ole
days of university life,
and of celebrating our
shared bonds of brotherhood. The Epsilon Iota chapter
held its annual
Frank Norris Pig
Dinner in late February. The event
was widely recognized among the
attendees as a
rousing success.
Brothers returned to
Evansville from their
homes in Indianapolis,
Louisville, Washington
D.C., Chicago, and
many other distant locations to commemo-
rate our fraternal link
forged in our university
years.
In his capacity as
master of ceremonies,
Kyle Korkhouse
(Evansville 2003)
kicked off the evening with a few
jokes and stories.
Coupled with the
nearby bar, his jovial attitude kept
everyone cheerful
throughout the
night. In this po-

2010) leave their mark on the beaches of Valencia, Spain.

litical year, it seems
Brother Korkhouse is running for a permanent role
as the Pig Dinner MC.
Not only did Brother
Korkhouse get to entertain
the crowd with his anecdotes, he also had the
honor of introducing this
year’s keynote speaker, Ed
Gabe (Hanover 1990).
Brother Gabe serves as the
Ritualist of the fraternity,
but his speech did not
dwell on Phi Gam secrets
or history. Instead, he discussed the values that the
ritual imparts, and implored the assembled
brothers to utilize them in
their daily lives, thus enriching themselves, the
fraternity, and the people
around them. Our sincere
thanks go to Brother Gabe
for taking the time to
speak to us and for his
valuable insights.
Perhaps the most surprising occurrence of the
evening was the undergrads finally learning how
to roast a pig. Past attempts have ended with
the animal reduced to ash
or held together with aluminum foil. Neither of
these incarnations have
exactly inspired confidence in the Phi Gam’s
more long in the tooth, but
this year, the pledges carried out a beautiful, professional looking roast pig.
As the eldest FIJI in attendance, Neil Goodman
(Iowa State 1962) had no
problem giving this year’s
pig a smooch on the snout.
Scott Gurgol
(Evansville 2003) was presented with the Graduate
Brother of the Year Award
by the undergrad chapter
for his work with the new
Board of Chapter Advisors. Brother Gurgol has
Sean Riley (2005) finds a common interest with his son Braden
repeatedly opened his
home in Louisville to the
undergrads for retreats or
social gatherings. After
Brother Korkhouse made
us laugh for the last time
and another Pig Dinner
ended, many brothers
gathered at Stockwell’s, a
small bar on Evansville’s
east side, and continued
the night’s festivities. A
great time was had by all
in attendance.

Lastly, to all you exiles
far away, it is our sincere
desire that you will be able
to attend future Pig Dinners, and celebrate our
brotherhood with those of
us fortunate enough to live
within a few hours of
Evansville. Certainly, in
this time of high fuel costs,
your absence is understandable, but still unfortunate. Hopefully, we will
all see you next year.

\r\nState of the Chapter
Brothers,
The Epsilon Iota chapter has
just concluded the Spring 08’ semester
and we’re quickly beginning to lay the
foundation for our future accomplishments. I would first like to congratulate our recently graduated brothers as
you welcome them into the graduate
community. Their leadership and
companionship will be missed in the
coming year.
The undergrads are prepared
to dive into next semester’s recruitment with determination, passion, and
desire. We just recently gathered in
Evansville for our summer recruitment retreat, and the chapter is optimistic about our prospects on campus.
Our Recruitment Chairman, David
Reidford, is anxious to put all of our
planning into action. Mark your calendars for the start of recruitment on
September 13, ending with Passover
on September 20.
The chapter is very proud to
inform you that after falling behind the
other fraternities on campus in
grades last fall, we have recaptured
the highest male Greek GPA on campus for the spring semester. I take
this as proof that the chapter can
identify its weaknesses and adjust
accordingly. I hope to take this step
in the right direction and apply it to
other aspects of the chapter, thus
shoring up any problems that currently exist or may arise in the future.
My personal goals for the
chapter include raising over $10,000
Fraternity President

dollars at Hot-Tub-o-Thon, continuing our strong IM traditions, independently improving the chapter
house in amenities and cleanliness,
introducing a new campus philanthropy during the first semester as a
bookend to our immensely successful
Hot-Tub-o-Thon, and ensuring that
our brothers continue to dominate
campus in every possible way. By
promoting self accountability and the
basics of brotherhood, I hope to bring
the chapter back to its original foundation.
Every new year presents its
own unique challenges and opportunities, and this year will be no different.
We’re looking forward to facing the
future head-on. Graduate involvement will be crucial throughout this
next year, and I look forward to your
participation in the chapter’s successes.
-Peter Hanscom, President
