LOOKING THE PIG IN THE EYE
By: Randall L. Whittaker 1970
When asked
to write a recap of
the 45th Annual Norris Pig Dinner from a
Graduate Brother
perspective, I became
aware that “the Pig”
is more than a one
night banquet.
I also found that
Brother Frank Norris
had presented me
with an excellent
template for presenting a grad’s-eye view
of the occasion.

we all agreed that Phi Gamma Delta
is “not for college days alone,” we
recognized that “dose days” are unequalled in terms of starting lifelong
friendships and setting the stage for
our individual lives.
I was particularly impressed by the number of Brothers
who have stayed in contact with
each other over the years. Tales of
trips to Australia to visit a Brother,
long weekenders at the lake, hooking up to “see der team joost knowck’em into Hell.” It was also great to
witness those who had been in Exile
for years or decades find a big welcoming from their pledge Brothers,
Big and Little Brothers, Sons and

Sadly, we also remembered Brothers

All Graduate Brothers I have
spoken to are filled with pride knowing Sigma Omicron is doing most excellent. Reading about the achievements in grades, community service,
campus leadership and events in the
Sigma Omicronicle or the Phi Gamma
Delta magazine is heart warming. It
does not hold a candle to meeting and
talking with our Wilkinson Award
winners, the 4.0 guys, Homecoming
King, and the various other achievers.
Sigma Omicron is special to us all. It
is worth noting that opening the banquet to dates and spouses makes us
unique in Fijiland. All Graduate
Brothers enjoyed meeting the dates of
the members (proof that Phi Gam is
number 1) and especially having an
opportunity to visit with Fiji sweethearts of the Graduate Brothers. Having the ladies present also helps hold
down the food fights.
Reviewing the nuts and bolts
of the 45th Pig shows that the event
was meticulously planned, promoted,
and organized. Brother Jared Denny
and his event team had all bases covered. The Conoco-Phillips center was a
perfect venue. Grads can easily visit
the House, stroll campus, and get to
A.L. Bennett, Bob Murphy, Ron Harp and Phil Webb
the banquet without moving their
cars. The banquet room was packed
with loyal Fijis no doubt having too
much fun to realize that the food was
good and the service excellent. The
post Pig Dinner chatter was all about
the benchmark set by this special day.
The biggest attendance, the best
venue, a rousing recognition of the
decades of service to Sigma Omicron
by Brother Bob Hamm, an inspirational speech by Brother Bill Rodgers
of Nu Omega (don’t forget the grip),
and then to top it off by having the

The challenge is now to meet
or exceed the success of the 45th Pig.
The key to our success is simple….when you get the date start calling your Brothers and get commitments to attend. Look the Pig in the
Eye; you will see the reflection that:
“Der team of your time is the same as
mine; Bring another Bro and sing

GRADUATE SPOTLIGHT - VAL WHEELER 1966
Why did you pledge Phi Gamma
Delta?
I was the first person in my family to
attend college, so not only did I not know
much about college life, I certainly did
not know anything about Greek life. But
several high school buddies encouraged
me to attend some summer rush parties
and sign up for fall rush. (At this point in
my answers you have probably noticed
that academics have not entered the picture. Some of us set out to master the
social side of the equation.) My brother
had a friend whose father was a Fiji at
OU and he sent a recommendation in to
the OSU chapter which, at the time, was
only a colony. My attraction to the Fijis
was their small size. I don’t think there
were more than 15 to 20 members and
pledges and about 25% lived outside the
house. The idea of getting in on the
ground floor of a new fraternity on campus was exciting.
What is your favorite memory as an
undergraduate?
So much time has passed since graduation not one memory stands out. A lot
can never be put into print even after all
these years. Instead there are a bunch of
instances that come to mind. Most of
them revolve around living in the
“gingerbread” house and the annex:
Living in the annex dorm style
and learning to sleep in the same room
with a bunch of guys who were always
playing pranks on each other at all hours
of the night.
Getting revenge on the pledges for
taking a pledge sneak by putting lim-
burger cheese in the heating vents of
their annex. If the annex was still standing it probably would still smell like limburger cheese.
The house catching fire while
were eating dinner and most of us simply taking our dinner outside to eat and
watch the firemen do their thing.
Playing touch football in the front
yard.
Living in the “black” room facing
the girls dorm. (The logic of a “black”
room will escape all those except the
ones who lived in it).
Watching Fred Mostrom come
into the dining room for dinner with
socks on over his shoes because Mom
Wright had told him he could not come
into the dining room wearing shoes and
no socks.
Hearing that same Mom Wright
scream when she noticed someone had
frozen some goldfish in ice cubes and put
them in her iced tea.
On and on and on...
What is your favorite memory as a
graduate so far?
I moved from Oklahoma in the late 80s
so I have not been around the fraternity
brothers I lived with so most of those
early graduate memories have
faded. (too much good wine.) I think
what I have enjoyed the most is watching the Sigma Omicron Chapter thrive. I
have watched it grow from a colony, an
average chapter, decline, recolonize, and
today it is one of the top fraternities on
the OSU campus. That is a real source of
pride.
What kind of influence has the
Fraternity had on your life?
The biggest influence Phi Gam had on
me was it provided me with a goal to get
initiated, which in turn required that I
develop good study habits to make sure I
graduated. In short, had it not been for
the Fraternity, I am not sure I would
have finished, and in those days, if you
weren’t in college, you were in Vietnam.
Tell us about your family.
Linda (Grif) and I recently celebrated
our 40th wedding anniversary. Linda
graduated from OSU where she was a
Kappa. We have two children, Jennifer and Josh. Jennifer lives in San
Antonio, TX with her husband and our
three grandchildren, Ryan, Jake and
Sawyer. Jennifer graduated from
Texas A & M and, like her mother,
taught elementary school for a few
years before becoming a homemaker. Our son Josh graduated from
Indiana University and currently lives
in Santa Monica, CA. He leases office
space in the Los Angeles area and is
engaged to be married this August.
Tell us about your career.
I spent the first five years after college
teaching in the Oklahoma City school
system while I was going to graduate
school at OU at night. Upon leaving
teaching, I entered the real estate
business. I have spent most of my time
in the commercial office investment
sector. During that time, we have
lived in Denver, Houston, Chicago and
currently Newport Beach, CA. I currently am president of the office division of The Irvine Company, a large
owner and developer of real estate in
southern California.
What are your major interests
now?
Besides spending time with my family, especially my grandchildren, my
passion is riding one of my sport motorcycles. I own a BMW and a
Ducati. The California weather is
ideal for year-around riding, either
along the Pacific Coast Highway or
the winding roads in the mountains. Great therapy.

TRANSITIONING VENDORS
By: Ryan Bebee 1995, House Corporation President
As leaders of your house corporation, one of our primary goals is
to increase our communication with
our primary audience - all graduates,
affiliates and honorary initiates of the
Sigma Omicron Chapter! We would
like to inform you of any and all news
& major decisions of the house corporation, Sigma Omicron Housing Association, Inc.
In another portion of this
issue of The Sigma Omicronicle, we
will list the generous donors of the
annual campaign. Thank you for all
you’ve done to help your chapter &
your house corporation in 2007-2008!
In 2007-08, we used Affinity
Connection (AC), based in State College,
PA to help publish The Sigma Omicronicle, keep our database up-to-date, solicit
for the annual campaign & manage the
collection of your thoughtful gifts. As we
reviewed our annual contract with AC
for the upcoming year, we decided the
financial resources you’ve graciously
given SOHA should be used wisely and
conservatively. Therefore, we are proceeding with an agreement with the
International Headquarters and Foundation of PGD in Lexington, KY.
The HQ staff has been a loyal
ally to the SOHA and the chapter for
many years. Not only are they not-forprofit, but they have a more vested
interest in our long-term success.
Please be patient as we make this
transition to PGD International! We
are excited about our second year of
the annual campaign, launching a
more user-friendly chapter/graduate
website (launching August 2008), and
sharing our goals, desires & dreams
with you!
SIGMA OMICRON AAA SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS
Academic Achievement Awards (AAA) are just one benefit the Phi Gamma Delta Educational Foundation provides to
undergraduate brothers - a $250 check to new initiates for achieving at least a 3.0 GPA during their pledge term. Phi
Gamma Delta is the only national fraternity or sorority to offer this blanketed scholarship that helps get our new brothers
focused on their academics. Thanks to those donors who support the Phi Gamma Delta Educational Foundation. Since its
inception in 1999, AAA scholarship has awarded 188 Sigma Omicron brothers, including this list of current brothers who
received the AAA this year:

AD ASTRA
Sigma Omicron said goodbye to two brothers earlier this year. We extend our deepest condolences to their families.
Mark A. Rice 1983
Mark Rice, pledge class of
1979, lost his battle with cancer
May 14 and gained the eternal
brotherhood in the Glory of
Heaven.
The OSU FIJI Chapter of
today probably did not know Mark,
but if you ever have an opportunity
to visit with any Brother from the
late 70s to Mid 80s, you'll find out
just how great a Brother this man
was to us all.
Back in the days in the
FIJI house, Mark was often referred to as Superman and Big
Mark.
Big Mark was the premier
athlete of Sigma Omicron, our
quarterback, our center, our point
man and our cleanup hitter.
Mark was also the protector, standing probably close to 6'6". No one
ever wanted to mess with anyone
from the FIJI house with Big Mark
standing behind us (just ask
Brother Greg Cain).
Back in the hey day of the
old A D Pi Play-day with the drinkathlons, Big Mark was always
counted on to push the FIJI house
over the top (after Brother Greg
Cain would finally pass out)
and to our 3-peat championship,
winning the title 3 years
straight and then Mark would
be the one to escort us home
(often carrying Brother Greg
Cain over his shoulders).
Big Mark also at one
time was (and would be willing
to bet still is) the all-time reining coney island coney dog
champion. After a night out on
the strip (with Brother Greg
Cain…you guys seeing a connection here), Mark consumed over 30
coney dogs in one sitting.
Our Brother Big Mark
fought a courageous battle to the
end (with Brother Greg Cain faithfully by Big Mark's side just as
Mark had been for him). So many
times during his battle, it was the
memory of our brotherhood with so
many FIJIs and our old FIJI days
that brought Big Mark so many
smiles, laughter and stories.
Although so many of us
did not see or have an opportunity
to visit with Big Mark through the
years after college, we all continued
to have the same bond today as we
did way back then proving that the
FIJI brotherhood is a tremendous
asset and a tremendous friend to
have with you through the years.
It is times like this that our
motto stands true…. Phi Gamma
Delta is “Not Just for College Days
Alone.” Remember this motto our
FIJI brothers and please remember
our brother, Big Mark Rice.
Dwayne Young, 1985
Ernest C. Young, Jr. 1966
Ernest Claypool Young, Jr.
passed away at home on June 4,
2008 after a long illness. Ernie was
born December 10, 1944 in Sentinel, OK.
He is survived by his wife
of 30 years, Marylyn. He also
leaves his sons Andrew, Christopher, Ryan, Andrew's wife Christina, and their children Simon and
Abby.
He is also survived by his
mother Alta Fuller; brother James,
Col. US Army (ret.); and his wife
Jody; their children Boe, Chad, and
Josh; sister, Theresa Fuller; and
her children Emma and Avery;
cousins Lee Card, Henry Card and
J.D. Jenkins. He is preceded in
death by his daughter, Lauren; his
father Col. Ernest C. Young, Sr.,
and his step father GM Fuller.
After graduating from
Oklahoma State University, he
spent two years in Germany as a
lieutenant in the Army. He moved
to Albuquerque in 1969 and started
his career as an interior designer.
His wit and sense of style attracted
many friends and clients throughout the years. He was well loved
and will be deeply missed by all
who knew him. A celebration of
Ernie's Life was held at 2:00 p.m.,
Monday, June 16 at St. John's
Episcopal Cathedral, 318 Silver
SW.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
Bob Murphy (1972) has filed to run for the State Senate District 21. Brother Murphy has served as Associate
District Judge of Payne County for the past 14 years.
Murphy states “Resigning from the Bench to run for the
Senate is one of the most difficult decisions I have ever
made. As Judge I had the responsibility of interpreting
the law from the back end of the law making process. I
feel that being on the front end of the process, I can
bring about positive change in legislation for Oklahoma.
Brother Murphy has been a “Stillwater Anchor” for
Sigma Omicron. He served on the Board of Chapter
Advisors and was twice named Outstanding Alumnus
by the Chapter.
Ryan Neurohr (2004) married Emily Altendorf

insurance agent with Farmers Insurance. They work in
Tulsa and live in Jenks, OK. You can contact Ryan at
ryneurohr@yahoo.com or (918) 492-8282.
Jake Grinnell (2006) was engaged to Lacey Jones on
May 24, 2008.
