2011 Summer Newsletter Zeta (Indiana University)
The Hoosier Fiji
Indiana University ‐ Zeta Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity ‐ Summer 2011 Edition
HOUSE CORPORATION UPDATE
a 3.38 GPA in the
spring 2011 semester. This was the
best GPA on campus. Combined
with our other
campus awards this
past spring (#1 in
IMs, #1 in campus
activities), it clearly
documents Zeta’s
position as the #1
Greek house on
campus.
Greetings Zeta Brothers,
I hope all are enjoying a wonderful summer. I wanted to
update you on a couple of
things.
First, and foremost, the undergraduate chapter achieved
We have won the Jordan Bowl
twice in the past 3 years. The
Jordan Bowl is the Phi Gamma
Delta International Fraternity’s
award for the top academic
chapter in Fijiland. This
spring’s 3.38 GPA should be
good enough to win that prestigious award again!
Our discussions with the University continue regarding its
desire to purchase Beechwood. IU has offered us the
property next to the Theta
house (8th and Woodlawn),
which we are examining very
carefully to determine its suitability for our needs. Our
assessment of the proposed
property and IU's real interesting in purchasing Beechwood should be completed
shortly.
If either is insufficient, the
House Corporation will be
reporting back to you soon
about the attention required
to Beechwood.
Chapter
Highlights
• The undergraduate
chapter achieved #1 on
campus for its spring
semester GPA, 3.38.
This is also the highest
semester GPA in chapter
history!
• Zeta took home the Intramural Championship
trophy this year.
• Twenty-nine pledge bids
have already been
accepted for the fall
semester. With 37 bids
extended, the number
will hopefully increase.
RECRUITMENT CHAIRMEN CONTINUE TRADITION
We are excited to announce the recruitment of
the newest pledge class for
Zeta is nearing its completion. Our final summer
recruitment event concluded this past weekend,
where we gave out six additional bids. This number
puts the pledge class of
2015 at 37 bids extended,
with 29 bids already accepted and signed. Of the
29 signed bids, PC 2015
joins our house with
an average high school GPA
of 3.89, 17 varsity sport
captains, countless leadership positions in the respective high schools, and 16
legacies carrying on the
traditions of Phi Gamma
Delta.
We are excited about the
potential they offer to our
house and look forward to
where they will take our
chapter over the next four
years.
Congratulations to graduate initiate Nick Willet (pictured
above with friends) and the rest of our recent initiates
on their initiation this past spring.

A NOTE FROM THE CHAPTER PRESIDENT
By: Matthew “Shotgun” Moheban (2012)
Because I am fortunate enough to be a
legacy at Zeta (Dad, Greg “Chief” Moheban, 1984 and Uncle, Jeff “DJ” Moheban, 1982), I am fully aware of the deep,
rooted history of this great chapter and
the everlasting passion of all those
brothers who have been here before me.
We strive to build on the incredible legacy left by the former men of Zeta, and I
am proud to say that spring 2011 was
another banner semester in our storied
heritage at Indiana University.
The chapter’s academic performance was
one to remember. The undergraduate
brothers earned a GPA of 3.38, the highest in the Chapter’s history and 1st on
campus. 83 of 99 undergraduate brothers received GPAs above a 3.0. The junior class produced an impressive 3.45
GPA, and the freshmen were not far behind with a GPA of 3.40. Zeta was also
the winner of Indiana University’s Intellectual Development and Academic Support Award.
We continued our tradition of excellence
in intramurals by returning the annual
trophy to its rightful home. FIJI domi-

nated the spring season with Indoor
and Outdoor Soccer Championships,
our 2nd Dodgeball Championship of the
year, and exceptional performances in
basketball and softball. Our intramural
success, as it has been for so many
years, is determined by outstanding
pride, commitment, and performance
from all of our athletes.
Our brothers continue to be leaders on
campus. Brother Mark “Malibu”
Dunbar (2012) was chosen to serve as
a member of the 2011-12 IUSF Steering
Committee. Brothers John “Lurch”
Eckert (2012) and Andrew
“Quaggs” Black (2012) were accepted into the prestigious Investment
Banking Seminar through the Kelley
School of Business, joining Brothers
David “Oz” Ellis (2012) and
Eshaan “Muffin” Arora (2013)
who are already involved in the
Investment Banking Workshop.
FIJIs are also leading the year-round
fundraising effort by Indiana University Dance Marathon with the president
and 3 serving on the executive council.
This semester, we say goodbye to an
outstanding senior class that left a lasting legacy at 631. The future looks as
bright as ever after an amazing year
from our incoming sophomores and the
unbelievable new recruiting class of
2015.
Being able to serve as president at
Beechwood has been the most humbling experience of my life. I can assure
all graduate brothers that the friendships and experiences that made Zeta
so special are as strong as ever. Thank
you for your unrelenting support, and I
am damn proud to be a Zeta Fiji!

INTRAMURAL TROPHY RETURNS TO ZETA
After finishing second place for the
2009-10 school year, the brothers had
one goal for intramurals during 201011: Recapture the top intramural spot
on campus. And that’s just what we did,
coming in first place on campus by exactly 1000 POINTS. To put that in
perspective, a first place finish in the A
league for basketball is worth 200
points. This outstanding performance
for the year was not on the shoulders of
one or two people; it was dispersed
across over half of the brothers in the
house. Here is a recap of some of the
teams and outstanding performers for
this past semester.
We started off this semester strong in
basketball with each team (A, B, C and
D) all winning their respective divisions.
Each team continued to hold their own
in the playoffs, including an impressive
run by the A team to the Elite 8. The A
team, led by seniors Mike Mahoney
(2011), Parker Remak (2011), and
Pete Antonelli (2011) went an impressive six straight games before losing
to eventual champion Acacia.
The Double’s Racquetball team of
Grant Gordon (2013) and senior
Alex Swider (2012) posted an impressive third place finish and Gene
Barrett (2013) finished out the winter
season with a second place finish in the
3-point shootout.
The spring season was cut
short due to the
poor weather
conditions at
the end of the
semester, but
both the soccer
and softball
teams finished
their seasons 30. The softball
team was led by
senior pitcher
Zack Issleib
(2011), as well as
juniors Ben Riggins (2013) and
Craig Brown (2012), sophomores
Howie Bergdoll (2013), Gene Barrett (2013), and Jason Batliner
(2013), and freshman Max Vandermark (2014).
but juniors Jason Seward (2012)
and Stephen Pannah (2012) will be
coming back for another run for a
championship in the fall.
Although the soccer season was cut
short, the team tasted revenge from last
season’s championship game, posting
an impressive 3-2 victory over Beta.
Seniors Matt Behan (2011), Nick
Gaughan (2011), Ted Westfall
(2011), and Peter Servass (2011) are
going to be missed, as they collected
four championships over their years,
ZETA FIJI RUSH
