The Epsilon Owl
Graduate REPORT
Every Year … We Need You!
By David Batten ‘79, Graduate President, Phi Gamma Delta Graduates
Another spring is almost here, meaning it’s time
once again for the Epsilon Owl to hit mailboxes.
As a new season begins, I am reminded of the
continued legacy that Phi Gam carries forth
each and every year. In order to ensure our
continued success for generations to come, we
need your participation every year too.
Our Phi Gam experience wasn’t just for
the four years we spent at UNC. Rather, it is
a lifelong experience that continues to grow
in our graduate years. Every year, we fulfill
our mission to keep you connected with Phi
Gam through our newsletter, our web site and
our monthly eLetters. And every year, we are
counting on you to remain an active participant
in our graduate relations program.

Chapter Recruitment
Rush Efforts are Underway, and You Can Help!
By Sam Duckett
I am one of five rush chairs for Phi Gam this
upcoming fall semester. I am writing you
today on behalf of our fraternity to help Phi
Gam get a jump start on recruitment as the
incoming freshmen are starting to enroll. We
have begun to compile a rush list with names
of siblings and friends from home that may
be interested. If you know of any incoming
freshmen that you would like to recommend to
us, please send their contact information to one
of the addresses listed to the right. We plan to
send our annual rush letter after Easter break,
inviting the incoming freshmen to a spring
party at the house and the Phi Gam beach
weekend in Wilmington, NC.
If you’d like to help us in this effort by
contributing names, ideas or support, please
feel free to contact any of the brothers listed
below. Thank you for all your continued help
and support!

\r\nGraduate
Phi Gam - A No-Brainer for John Marriott ‘82
What’s your most memorable moment as
an Epsilon undergrad?
It would be hard to come up with a most
memorable moment, but one that sticks is
remembering a very naïve and not so worldly
freshman pledge. I was essentially kidnapped
by my Big Brother, John Gates ’79, and some
other upperclassmen. I have no idea where we
went or whether there was any plan, but we
spent a number of hours just riding around,
talking (probably drinking a good deal) and
having a great time. It was very special to me
to be treated so well by a bunch of guys that I
really respected.
Why did you pick/join Phi Gam over other
fraternities?
It was a no-brainer for me. I bonded easily with
many of the brothers as well as the other guys
going through rush that appeared to be leaning
towards the Phi Gams. Even though I went to
high school in Virginia, my family was from
Rocky Mount and I really liked the eastern
North Carolina ties that existed as well.
What was your nickname (if any) and how
did you earn it during your undergrad
years?
BT named me Mario, based on my last name,
which soon became Mario Carrelli, who was
a character on an old soap opera. Some of the
brothers called me Mario and others Carelli,
but they both stuck and to this day, I am still
called by one of those whenever I run into an
old Phi Gam.
How did you and your Epsilon buddies
celebrate Spring Break?
Every one of them was memorable, but all of
them seemed to involve Greg McDonald ’83
convincing me to go somewhere like Aspen
or Key West or the Bahamas. I remember one
trip ending up at the same place as a bunch of
Pi Phis and we all had a blast.

John Coffman ’81 is Thankful for Connections Formed at the House
Why did you join Phi Gam as an
undergraduate?
I knew I wanted to join a fraternity and Phi
Gam seemed liked a good fit for me at the
time.
What is the funniest memory from your Phi
Gam days?
The water monster was always a good one.
There are a lot of other ones but they are not
suitable for print.
How do you stay connected with your
brothers as a graduate?
I see a lot of them in Greenville as well as at
the beach.
Have you visited Chapel Hill since
graduation? Why or why not?
Yes, quite often; mainly for football and
basketball games.
How would your life be different today if
you had never joined Phi Gam? I certainly
would not have a lot of the relationships and
connections that were developed through the
house.
If you could go back and relive one
moment from your Phi Gam years, what
would it be and why?
I probably would not steal the Dannon yogurt
truck during the early morning mixer with the
Tri-Delts.
Where has life taken you since graduation?
What’s new in your life today?
I live in Greenville, NC with my wife Pam.
We have two children, Sydnor (19) and
Harrison (16). I am co-president of Coffman’s
Mens Wear and also do a little commercial
real estate.
Who do you stay connected with in your
graduate years? Are there any brothers
you’ve lost touch with whom you’d like to
reconnect?
I stay connected with a lot of the Greenville
guys as well as a great group from Raleigh.

Willie Hobson ’64
(225 Cottage Place, Charlotte, NC 282072211; whobson1@carolina.rr.com) I’m a
retired lawyer. My wife Dorothy and I live
in Charlotte with seven grandchildren (all
in Charlotte). I sleep with my wife and four
Yorkies and play alto and tenor saxophones in
a local Big Band Jazz Ensemble.
Last summer I cleaned out some wild
bamboo in my back yard. It reminded me of
the Fiji Island “boo raids.” So I took several
pictures.
Jim Moye ’66
(1713 Rosewood Drive, Greenville, NC
27858-4447; jimmoye@suddenlink.net) I
am semi-retired in Greenville, NC. I’ve been
married to Barbara for 44 years, play golf with
Charles Vincent and Charles Gaskins, and
am a proud grandfather of (almost) two-yearold Rose.
Thomas Higgins ’68
(thiggins@hfgmlaw.com) I have just retired
and moved to 1811 Front Street in Beaufort,
North Carolina.
Bob Wright ’68
(200 S Biscayne Blvd., Miami, FL 33131;
rtwjr1@yahoo.com) Diana and I sold our
house and moved to South Beach about three
years ago. We moved back to the mainland
last year. It’s just us now; Sarah lives in Austin,
TX; Nicole lives in Palm Beach Gardens with
her husband Michael and our two (to date)
grandchildren, Henry and Elizabeth; Jon is
an airline pilot and lives in Doha, Qatar with
his wife Kelly; and Rick, our youngest, will
graduate from medical school in Tel Aviv this
June. We continue to cover the globe.
Professionally, I am a partner with Stroock
& Stroock & Lavan LLP, a 350-lawyer firm
having offices in New York, LA, and of
course, Miami.
Reid Rhodes ’76
(2909 Greystone Dr., Rocky Mountain, NC
27804; rrhodes@jharm.com) I am married
to Margaret Ann (35 years). My kids are Dr.
Suzanne Rhodes Sharpton, San Francisco, and
Thomas Rhodes, Charlotte, NC, a 2010 Phi
Gam!
Scott Hazelgrove ’06
(1002 Harvey Circle, Kinston, NC 285013643; scotthazelgrove@gmail.com) I am
now practicing antitrust law with Hunton &
Williams in DC.
Churchill Bunn ’06
(503 Pritchard Ave, Chapel Hill, NC 275162137; cbunn1584@gmail.com) Over the past
two years I’ve been in the full-time MBA
program back in Chapel Hill. While certainly
a different experience, it has been great to be
back at UNC for another run. Upon graduation I am moving to southern California to
develop hotels for OTO Development.
