Philanthropy Updates
We have continued the fight
against cystic fibrosis with
many new fundraising events.
Pig Dinner Report
This year the Norris Pig
dinner was once again a great
time, mark your calendars for
the next on April 6th.
Words from the President
Our president talks about our
latest achievements, advances,
and plans for our chapter.
Honorable Mention
With the new semester
coming up quick, the Kappa
Rho chapter of Phi Gamma
Delta has been gearing up for
fall recruitment. Brad
Leusner will be our new
recruitment chair, coming
with strong determination,
and an even stronger
brotherhood to back him up
we are all ready to recruit the
next generation of FIJI
gentleman. Expect big things
in the upcoming future of
this house on the University
of Rhode Island campus.
Recent Graduates
This year we had three graduates in the Spring 2012
graduating class, all of which have found a career in
the respective fields of study. Mike Hansen, and
Justin Gordon graduated with sociology degrees
specializing in criminal justice. Gerald Tardiff with a
Business degree specializing in accounting. All of
these Phi Gamma Delta gentlemen are quickly
becoming successful members of today’s society.
Honorable mention to an
outstanding brother that has
been a strong asset to the
uprising of our chapter.
Brotherhood is the very price and
condition of man's survival.

These brothers are a reminder to the rest of us that
there is still so much more to come after college, and
that determination pays off in the end. We wish the
best of luck to these brothers and hope for a bright
future for all of them.

Honorable Mention: Jerry Tardiff
Jerry Tardiff is a senior accounting major as well as our chapter’s
former Historian and current Brotherhood Chair. I am writing
this in order to extend to him an honorable mention for his stellar
performance this semester in the latter position. Jerry has
organized more successful brotherhood events this semester than
any other Brotherhood Chair that I have seen in my time at this
fraternity. He has put together several football games and a poker
night that served to bring out a spirited competition between the
brothers that I can honestly say has brought us all much closer.
Brotherhood in general throughout the house has become much
better and we are working and living together in a manner
consistent with the excellence that we have come to expect from
all Fiji’s. I attribute much of this cohesiveness to Jerry and his
outstanding contributions to this fraternity through the
Brotherhood Chair position. Jerry is one of the few people that I
know who can always bring a smile to my face as well as one of
the hardest working individuals that I have ever had the
pleasure of meeting. Jerry will be graduating this semester so
our next Brotherhood chair will have some very large shoes to
fill. Thank you for everything Jerry it did not go
unappreciated.

President‘s Message
Brothers,
Since our last newsletter many great
things have happened at Kappa Rho. We
received two awards at URI’s annual Greek
Awards Banquet. One for Academic Excellence,
and the second for Most Improved Fraternity!
We have seen many improvements over this
academic year and hope to continue that trend
this coming fall.
Our brothers have been working hard to
improve our chapter in many ways.
Involvement is very important, and we now
have three brothers on next years IFC board.
We also have brothers who participate in many
other extracurricular activities, and club sports.
We have our goals set high for recruitment this
coming fall, and have a strong number of
returning brothers living in the house. If you
know of any incoming freshman students, or
transfer students coming to URI this fall please
feel free to have them contact me, or our
recruitment chairman!
Pig Dinner this year was also a success.
Many young graduate brothers were in
attendance as well as most of our Housing
Corporation. Next year we would like even
more graduates to come back to enhance our
annual gathering. So if you would like to be
notified and added to an e-mail list for next
years pig dinner if you aren't already on one
please let us know.
The 164th Ekklesia will also be held this
summer and in attendance we will have three
brothers, our House Corp. President, and
House Father. If you want any information on
Ekklesia or any other Kappa Rho news please
E-Mail me Robert_Marshall@my.uri.edu.
Fraternally,
Robert W. Marshall IV
Chapter President

Philanthropy Report
Written by: Brad Leusner
Over the past semester, the
Kappa Rho chapter of FIJI has been
involved in little acts to help the world
around us. Whether these activities
took place in the Warwick Mall or at a
freezing Scarborough beach brothers
showed up to participate. Some were
school-organized events, but many
were thought of and put together by
our brothers.
Getting ready for FIJI freeze (Photo courtesy of Andy
Starting early on in the semester we
Pond)
literally jumped right into charitable
events. While the weather was still frigid out the FIJI Freeze was taking place. It occurred during a
Saturday morning when any self-respecting college student would be cozily snuggled in bed, but
fighting Cystic Fibrosis was more important for us. The basic summary of this event was for
brothers to accept donations or sponsorship in order to jump into the water that numbed your
body. First we shed our clothes, took pictures, and then whilst shouting everyone ran down the
beach into the water. The faint of heart stayed by the edge and only got their feet wet, but some of
the more courageous brothers dived into the water before returning to the warmth of the cars.

Another strictly FIJI philanthropy
event was the “URI Fight with FIJI for
Cystic Fibrosis” that was planned by one of
the graduating brothers, Justin Gordon (4th
from the left in the picture). He was fully
supported by our philanthropy chairman
Nick Sullivan (5th from the left in the
picture) to make this event happen.
Between these two a sign was made, a
position at Warwick Mall was reserved, and
brothers were recruited in two shifts.
Overall several hundred dollars were
gathered.

As well as our own event we also
participated in several others. Several brothers
went to a Greek life cleanup of the nearby
Narraganset, where it was clear that the elderly
residents of this neighborhood appreciated
everything we did. We were also one of the
three fraternities that participated in this event
which prompted one of the organizers to say
“Well we had a lot of help from FIJI and…
those other two” making it clear the large
impact this small acts had. Many brothers
walked against cancer in the University of
Rhode Island Gymnasium, in an activity that
lasted throughout the night into the next
morning.
Through all these events it’s clear that
morality has not been forgotten or left behind
by the University of Rhode Island’s FIJI’s. Even
though this year was very productive for our
philanthropies, we aim to make next year even
better.

Norris Pig Dinner 2012
Pig Dinner this year was another success. Held at the UClub on campus brothers enjoyed a fun time with lots to
catch up on. It was great to see many young graduate
brothers return for their first post grad pig dinner. Brother
Mackinnon (10') gave the exiles toast. House Corporation
President Bob Marshall gave the current chapter update.
Henry Caniglia also on the board spoke about the 100-year
book. Current Chapter President Rob Marshall gave
undergrad report. Overall Pig dinner was a success, save
the date because next years pig dinner will be held April 6th!
If you know of any incoming freshman that would make
great Fiji Gentleman please contact Rob Marshall
