Tau Deuteron’s Competitive Spirit Takes Root
Help Your Class Attain a Higher Percent of Participation by Making a Gift Today
T
he Texas Fijis have kicked off the Texas Fiji: Not for College Days
Alone campaign in full force. The initial class participation numbers
are in and there are several pledge classes that really stand out. Three
alumni classes have participation rates exceeding 30%, and six more have
at least 15%. See the chart below to find out where your pledge class ranks.
At this point in the campaign, several brothers have taken it upon
themselves to ensure their classes have a strong participation. They are
making phone calls, sending e-mails, and writing letters to urge their
pledge brothers to make a contribution to the campaign. If your pledge
brother calls you, please take the time to listen to what he has to say and
make a commitment that best reflects what your experience with Texas
Fiji means to you.
The work of our class leaders is critical as we want every brother to have an
impact on the project. To ensure that we successfully reach our $5.5 million
goal, we need support from those of you who have not made a pledge, and
we ask you to consider a donation this year. Sending your first payment
with your pledge would be most beneficial to making sure construction
starts on time.
If every class could reach similar levels of participation as our 1978, 1986,
and 1977 leading classes, we would have already exceeded our goal. So if
you have not contributed, please accept the challenge to raise your class’s
level of participation, and pick up the phone when your class leader calls to
discuss how you can make an impact on Texas Fiji.
As alumni, we have a duty to support Texas Fiji. Others before us made
loyal commitments to ensure our success. Now it’s our turn. We need to
step up and match the high participation rates your brothers have already
put forth. Please do your part to secure the future of Texas Fiji.
I
Where Does Your
Class Rank?
n the spirit of Fiji’s love of competing, now is the time to join
your pledge class in Texas Fiji: Not for College Days Alone. Help
your class reach 100%. Your participation will not only help your
class be recognized, it will help Texas Fiji reach our campaign goal.
If you have not joined those who have already contributed to the
campaign, please do so now by returning the enclosed pledge card.
We would like to recognize the class of 1978 for leading the way
with 40% participation and the classes of 1977 and 1986 with more
than 30% participation. You are setting a standard and we need more
classes up there with you!
Below are the pledge class participation percentages in Texas Fiji: Not
for College Days Alone thus far.* Don’t see your pledge class listed? Be
the first to contribute by making a gift today.
The expansion will allow for a growing Chapter and
provide additional rooms and study and recreational areas.

Alumnus Reflects
on College Days
Gone By
M
ark Muecke PC ’97 was from a small town
in Matagorda County when he left to attend
the University of Texas. “Being in Austin and at
Buen Retiro, my eyes got as big as silver dollars.
I learned it was an opportunity of a lifetime after
the first six months. It instilled confidence in me
as I walked the 40 acres to class. It still does if it
comes up in a conversation today.”

At UT, Mark earned his bachelor’s degree in
economics. He also served as the pledge trainer
for the Chapter. Mark’s experience at Tau
Deuteron helped him become the strong leader
that he is today. He is the vice-president and
investment advisor for Kercheville & Company,
an investment securities firm in San Antonio. It
was working with Joe Kercheville, former Rotan
Mosle director and Texas alumnus that led him to
this position. Mark has been with the company
ever since he graduated in ’01.
Another alumnus was a positive role model for
Mark; Joe Flack Jr. PC ’69 was the president
of the advisory board while Mark was an
undergraduate. “I was encouraged to see how
much Joe and other alumni still loved the Chapter.”
Mark has also stayed involved with the Chapter
post-graduation by serving on the advisory board.
Mark visits the Chapter House often and says
nothing has changed, except the undergraduates
are smarter because of Texas’ strict admissions.
“Our Chapter is as strong as it has ever been.
They have dramatically improved alumni relations
and welcome us back all the time.” His trips to
campus helped him realize why giving back to
Texas Fiji: Not for College Days Alone was so
important. “Almost every fraternity at Texas has
done a construction project in the last 10 years.
My contribution will allow us to compete and
continue to be the best all-around fraternity. I want
the undergraduates to have the same experiences
as I did and be successful. I want my children to
have a sense of pride when they come to Buen
Retiro 20 years from now.”
For those brothers still considering
their involvement with the campaign,
Mark encourages them to look at all
the opportunities the Chapter has
provided throughout their lives.
“I would tell them to dance with
whoever brung ya. Because of Texas
Fiji, we met our wives, got job
opportunities, and made business
contacts. It’s time for us to give back
because of these dividends.”
trips, the Aubrey Golf Cup, and the famous Size
Matters Fishing Tournament in Port Aransas

David Mauze PC ’97 and Tyler
Thomas PC ’97. To any brothers
who may have lost touch over
the years, Mark encourages you
to visit during the upcoming
reunion. “They are the best way
to break back in.”
Mark lives in San Antonio,
Texas, with his wife, Bonnie,
and daughter, Lillie. In his spare
