Brothers studying together in the library at study hours
The Phi Kappa Chapter of Phi
Gamma Delta is undergoing a period of
change during the Fall 2012 semester.
We are implementing a culture change
to emphasize on scholarship more than
we ever have before. We revised our
scholarship plan, are creating a judicial
board program to enforce the
scholarship plan, and hosting study
sessions and checking each brother’s
grades periodically. We are confident
that keeping this mentality will bring us
to an era of great scholarship.
continuing with recruitment and hope to
have 12 to 15 pledged brothers by the
end of the September, which will be the
biggest pledge class in 2 years.

We are also hitting recruitment hard
and evaluating each potential new
member’s grades before offering them a
bid to become a pledged brother. On
September 4th, we extended 8 bids to
some young gentlemen that would all be
great additions to our chapter. We are

House Rennovations
The undergraduate brothers have been
hard at work on the chapter house this
summer. We have remodeled the
kitchen, including new tile countertops,
refinished cabinets and a new hardwood
floor. We have also purchased new
living room furniture and cleaned the
whole house. The improvements have
already made a difference in attracting
new members, and will hopefully
continue to do so throughout the
semester. We look forward to seeing
you homecoming weekend, and please,
stop in and see the new house.
Currently we are also in the process of
building new dinning room tables. One
last addition to the house is that last
semesters pledge class (Xi) donated a
charcoal smoker with a stainless steel
“FIJI” welded along the top. With an
New flooring, cabinets, and counters
attempt to increase Fiji's presence on
campus we have worked to raise a 35'
flag pole with our letters flying high on a
6'X10' flag at every tailgate. It is the
largest flag flying at any tailgate. As of
this past spring former president Greg
Mikulecky donated a self made ceramic
waterfall that features our chapter (Phi
Kappa) as well a Gamma the white owl,
this piece currently sits in front of our
chapter room.

Brothers and PNMs at a broomball recruitment event
Phi Gamma Delta Recruitment
Thanks to help from undergraduate
brother AJ Williams, we were able to
have a summer recruitment event at his
house in Denver as a way to attract
potential new members to come out and
meet the brothers in an environment
outside of Fort Collins. We gave out 8
bids for the Fall 2012 Semester, but that
isn't stopping us from doing 365
recruiting. One of our biggest recruiting
tools came from the Graduate Brothers,
who helped purchase a tent and a
tailgate spot for football games that we
are able to use as a massive recruiting
tool. We plan to hold a second rush
during the semester, so if you know any
college men that would a great Phi
Kappa FIJI, please contact Brian Lenz
at 609-618-9090.

Brothers at Ekklesia
Ekklesia Update
Four brothers, Zane Danielson, Brian
Lenz, Greg Mikulecky, and Pledged
Brother Jeff Mikulecky, from the Phi
Kappa chapter of Phi Gamma Delta
attended the 164th Ekklesia in New
Orleans, Louisiana. The business of the
fraternity was well thought out and
conducted, many friends were made,
and the memories made will never die.
While two brothers, Greg and Jeff, flew
to New Orleans, Zane and Brian made
the trek down in two days, 10 hours
each day. They all arrived on the
evening of the 1st to ensure that we
were able to do some site seeing before
the events of Ekklesia started. They
explored Bourbon Street, ate at the
famous Acme Oyster House, and visited
New Orleans’ oldest bar, Pat O’Briens.
business of the fraternity began bright
and early on Friday morning at 9am.
Friday evening, the Fraternity of
Phi Gamma Delta put on a special
event. We had a Mardi Gras themed
parade from our hotel, down Bourbon
Street and back. Business resumed on
Saturday morning and lasted through
the afternoon. On Saturday afternoon, a
Phi Kappa Graduate Brother, Scott
Mikulecky (1982) was inducted as the
Archon President for the next two years.
Saturday night was the closing banquet
with keynote speaker Morgan Spurlock,
who directed Supersize Me, Where in
the World is Osama Bin Laden, and
many other movies. Morgan was
awarded the Distinguished FIJI Award
for his outstanding career and continued
involvement with the fraternity.

Ekklesia Awards
At the 164th Phi Gamma Delta Eklessia
in New Orleans, the Phi Kappa chapter
was lucky enough to be presented with
multiple awards.
The chapter has for the 4th straight year
been presented with a John Templeton
McCarty Chapter Profieceny Award.
This award is handed out annually to all
chapters which adheres to the Phi
Gamma Delta laws and traditions,
remain in favorable standing within their
Universities, and exemplify the values of
all Phi Gamma Delta’s.
In addition to this award, Our chapter is
happy to announce Paul Lind (Purdue
’66), as a recipient of the Coulter Cup.
This award is handed out for
outstanding service to a undergraduate
chapter from a graduate brother other
than the Purple Legionnaire. Paul Lind
in his few years has been a very
PAGE
beneficial graduate brother for the Phi
Kappa chapter. Without him many of our
recruitment events would not have been
possible, and The Phi Kappa chapter
would like to thank him for all of his
dedication, input, and hard work he had
provided to our chapter.
164th Ekklesia
Awards
Finally, Mr. Robert Unfug was awarded
the Durrance Award, for the 3rd straight
year! The Durrance Award is awarded
annually to the most outstanding Purple
Legionnaire within the fraternity of Phi
Gamma Delta. Since the re-colonization
of the Phi Kappa chapter, Mr. Unfug
and remained an integral part of the
fraternity with his advisement and
support. Without his help the chapter
would not be where it is today. We
Congratulate Mr. Unfug for such a
monumental achievement and thank
him for his continued service.

Cover of The Fence Post
Recent Graduate Brother Update
On June 4th, 2012 the Fence Post, a
respectable local newspaper that covers
several topics including agriculture
featured Phi Kappa Fijis very own Josh
Cleland. After graduating Colorado State
in the spring of 2010, Josh Cleland left
with a degree in animal science and a
passion to reestablish the Cleland family
dairy. After a struggle with milk prices
and trying to keep the dairy stable, the
Cleland Dairy in Erie Colorado, Josh
(current Herd Manager) returned home
to help in any way he could. Josh says
“Dairy is in my blood, as I was raised on
one my entire life. That being said, it's
been the only place that I have had a
job. I remember that my dad and
grandpa started paying me in loose
change to water calves, pick up trash,
bed calves, ect., when I was only about
8-years-old. I always admired the way I
was raised and how I learned
responsibility, the value of hard work at
a very young age.” The Cleland dairy
now milks 400 cows and has 1,000
cows including bulls, dry cows and
replacement heifers as well as the
milkers. In the past it was believed that
the capacity of the dairy was only
around 600 cows total, however, today
the dairy far exceeds those
expectations. Josh continues to say, "I
would say that the biggest challenge is
keeping up with the milking herd which
incorporates everything from calving,
choosing the right cows to be in our
high/low milking pens, keeping feet
quality at their best, maintaining healthy
cows and feeding the best quality feeds
and keeping the cows comfortable.
Feed quality is extremely important to
me. When the cow is milking, she must
meet all her body maintenance
requirements before her body will allow
her to get pregnant." For more
information and to read the article in its
entirety follow the Fence Posts link at.

Brothers at MArch of Dimes
Community Service Update
The Phi Kappa chapter of Phi Gamma
Delta has always made sure to be
an active member in our community and
to make our school the best that it can
possibly be. Already, our fraternity has
three different community service events
that we will be involved in. We are
hoping to make as big of a difference in
these events as we did with the others
last semester.
The first event that we will be
participating in will be helping out with
Ram Ride. Ram Ride is the largest saferide program in the country and has
given over 125,000 students rides home
without a single incident. We also
volunteered with this same service last
semester where we helped out as
drivers, navigators, and dispatchers.
Our next volunteer opportunity is only a
few days after Ram Ride where we will
be helping the Larimer Animal-People
Partnership run its annual Doggie
Olympics. This great event is held in
order to help raise funds to train therapy
dogs who in turn visit hospitals, assisted
living homes, and hospices, so as to
raise the spirits of those residing there.
We will also be the very first fraternity to
ever help with the event, so we are very
excited to show them our FIJI spirit!
Fiji Helping The
Community
The next event that we have planned
(though not our last of the semester)
will be Cans Around the Oval. This
event is a CSU tradition since 1986 and
the largest can food drive in Larimer
county. Here we will help package
thousands of collected food cans in
order to be distributed to the Food Bank
of Larimer County. Last year over
60,000 cans were donated which just
makes us even more prepared to collect
even more!
However, events like these are nothing

Brothers participating in RamRide with Colorado State University
Dimes and CSUnity. For March of
Dimes, we helped set up and run a 3k
walk to raise money for research into
SIDs. CSUnity was another significant
CSU tradition where nearly 2000
volunteers were spread out over the
Fort Collins and Loveland area to assist
in 125 different community service
event. As for FIJI, we were involved in
helping to clean up 2 miles of the banks
of a creek in Loveland. Needless to say,
we are planning to make this semester’s
events just as successful as the last
ones.

Homecoming 2012
Homecoming 2012
This year, the brother of the Phi Kappa
chapter of Phi Gamma Delta will be
participating in homecoming with the
gentlemen of Pi Kappa Phi, and the
ladies of Pi Beta Phi. This year, our
theme is based off of the olympics and
each team will have a Greek God that
they will represent. During past
homecoming years, we have held
events for our graduate brothers and
families. This year will be no different!
Schedule of Events
On Saturday, October 6, FIJI will be
hosting a brunch at the FIJI house from
10:00am - 12:00pm. Afterwards, you will
then have the option to either participate
in a brewery tour, game day, or free time
from 12:30pm - 1:30pm. We will then
have a tailgate from 2:00pm - 5:00pm.
Kickoff begins at 5:00pm for the
Colorado State University vs. Fresno
State homecoming game.
