Spring 2017
Newly Initiated Pledge Class
This year, we have just initiated a tremendous 15-person
pledge class. These freshmen hail from all over the world:
from Milan to Panama and New Orleans to California. Across
the class, we have real estate agents, baseball players and
magicians. Instruction of the Purple Pilgrim and the brotherhood interview process all went extraordinarily well -Ethan Tse, Chris Muracca, Matthew Gilbertson, and Matteo
Sciolla all scored consistently over 90% during the semester
on the Purple Pilgrim, and as a pledge class over 320 oneon-one conversations happened between pledges and brothers. All 15 young men traveled to New York on Saint
Patrick’s day to hang out with many of our graduate brothers in what is always one of the most enjoyable events
of the year. These gentlemen were recently placed into their new lineages. Look out for a text from the newest
member of your lineage introducing themselves!
Paul DiNapoli and Bill Doane: Off to Work Early
Bill Doane (2017) and Paul DiNapoli
(2017) have both graduated from Penn
early to start their careers in music administration and football coaching, respectively. Both their paths are not typical of Penn
students, and both of their accomplishments are very impressive.
Bill Doane
Paul DiNapoli
Paul moved to Los Angeles in January to
work for the multi-platinum selling electronic band Depeche Mode. He is now
working as part of their management team,
helping handle the day-to-day logistics,
planning, promotional activities and
finances of the band as they prepare for
their upcoming world tour. Paul recently
traveled with the team to New York, where
the band played The Tonight Show Starring
Jimmy Fallon, and starting next month,
Paul will tour with the band for the next
year through Europe, North America and
South America.
Paul says that he is incredibly lucky to
have this opportunity to work for a stadium-sized act right out of undergrad and is
very excited for what’s next for him after
this tour.
Bill recounts that he just recently started as
a Defensive Graduate Assistant at The University of Texas at Austin, which means he
will be working full-time as a coach while
also pursuing a Master’s degree. This job is
a great opportunity for a young person in
the profession—most coaches spend time

in the high school or Division III ranks before landing
a major GA job—and Bill says he wouldn’t have the
opportunity if not for my time in Philadelphia. During
the 2015 and 2016 seasons, Bill worked as an assistant
at Penn and became close with the staff there. For his
first month or so with the Quakers, Bill was setting
up headsets for the coaches and holding the chains
during practice, but his responsibilities eventually grew
to breaking down film, building opponent scouting
reports and working with the scout team—all tasks that
Bill will also have at Texas. As he was looking to move
to a new program this spring, his academic success
at Penn set him apart from other candidates, and the
endorsement of the Penn coaches ultimately sealed the
deal.
We look forward to hearing more of their future successes!
Alumni President’s Update
Hello Brothers,
The board is happy to report the undergraduates and house are both very strong. We are working with the University and Campus Apartments which handles the property management of 3619 at a much needed renovation
of the kitchen. The undergrads have implemented a successful meal program, wish to expand it more, and the
current state of the kitchen is woeful and in need of upgrading to fully realize a first class meal program for the
brothers.
Unlike 20 years ago, where we could get bids and get work started, the hurdles today to commence work in
Philadelphia involve required engineering and architectural drawings, submissions of them to the Philadelphia
City board of health and board of licenses and inspections and various other school and city review boards. We
anticipate approvals shortly. Campus Apartments is submitting plans to contractors for bidding and assuming
the numbers come in around our preliminary estimate of $120,000 we would like to commence renovation as
soon as this summer, pending contractor’s schedules.
The kitchen renovation does not fall under the University Life and Safety umbrella, so it is the Fraternity’s financial responsibility. Once we have final numbers from the contractors, our board will review. Assuming we approve the project we will communicate with our alumni and ask for your financial support in raising the capital
needed for the kitchen renovation allowing the Beta Chapter to maintain our reputation as a leading fraternity at
the University of Pennsylvania.
Sincerely,
Terry Spahr (1988)
Alumni President
Pig Dinner Announcement
The 2017 Frank Norris Pig Dinner will take place on April 29 at 7:00pm at the Beta Fiji Chapter House (3619 Locust Walk). We will honor all brothers who have been a Phi Gamm for 25 years with the ceremonial Silver Owl
pin, and all brothers who have been with the brotherhood for 50 years with the corresponding Gold Owl pin. If
you have not done so, please email grantkleiser@gmail to RSVP. We hope that any brother who can will attend!
\r\nFIJI Basketball
FIJI Basketball has had a very strong season this year.
Due in part to the senior talent of Mario Del Cueto
(2017), Bill Doane (2017), and Grant Kleiser (2017),
FIJI made it all the way to the fraternity semifinals.
After a up and down season, FIJI emerged victorious
in a thrilling must-win game against SAE. With that
53-50 victory, we made it to the playoffs and eliminated SAE from making it to the postseason. Facing a
dominant Sig Ep in the quarterfinals, Mario Del Cueto
came through with 18 points as FIJI eked out a 47-45
win to go enter into the semifinals. Unfortunately, due
to sickness, injury and personal travel, four of the five
starters could not play in the semifinals, and Phi Gamma Delta lost to St. A’s. While not ending on the note
we wanted, all of the seniors in particular can say that
it was a special, memorable season filled with exciting
games. We were also delighted that the brotherhood
constantly followed and supported the team throughout the most successful season since our entry into the
finals in 2014.
Tim and Ted Schlein
One of our newly initiated brothers is Tim Schlein (2020), the son of Theodore Schlein (1986), a Beta FIJI brother in the graduating class of 1986. It is
always special when a current brother has a legacy in the Fraternity and we can
see multiple generations carry on our traditions. When asked about why they
decided to join Fiji, both Tim and Ted said that the people they met at events
were a major deciding factor. Ted highlighted the wonderful diversity of brothers, while Tim underscored how impressive many of them were in their ability
to balance academics, social life and other extra-curricular pursuits. Ted noted a Ted Schlein
few highlights of his time at Penn in FIJI, especially the ability to eat as a chapter
four nights a week (a tradition we have re-instated with our new meal plan). Tim
says he hopes that FIJI will allow him to build lasting friendships with people he
can connect with and share old stories, an element his father says has been the
hallmark of his life after graduation. Finally, Ted stated how happy he is that his
son can better understand one of the most important aspects of his life, and Tim
responded that he is honored to have the opportunity to do just that and continue the lineage. Clearly, both men are prime examples of Fiji gentlemen and we
are very happy to have the Schlein family continue to be a part of the Beta Chapter family. We thank Ted for his continuing support of our chapter and hope that
Tim has as great an experience as a Phi Gam.
