The year of 1980-81 has been one of turmoil at the

The annual Norris Pig Dinner will be celebrated this year at
the Toftrees Country Club. We are looking forward to the
return of our Gamma Phi alumni for an evening of rekindling
old friendships and reminiscing over the days now past at the
Gamma Phi Lodge. Last year, several alumni expressed the
Boardman Morse, Class of 1981, had lost his life in an automo
bile accident.
Lu was our former house treasurer and an
inspiration to us all. Brother Morse will be sorely missed by
all of the chapter members.
In addition, we were informed that our cook of six years,
Mrs. Alice Studebaker, had retired. However, we were saved
by graduate support. Bruce Harnish '80, was spending winter
term on campus and took over the kitchen duties. At the end
of the term, Bruce was off to Detroit and J&L Steel, so again
we were left with empty stomachs. We were saved once again
by Mrs. Gail Cardellino and her daughters.
The beginning of winter term also added five new brothers
into the fold. With their initiation, we also began our winter
pledge class of sixteen fine young men, fourteen of whom are
freshmen. April 12, these sixteen were initiated to bring the
desire that their wives also be invited to the dinner. Other
Phi Gam chapters which regularly extend the invitation to the
wives were consulted on the matter. The responses we
received were all enthusiastically positive, and indicated that
including the wives has always helped to make the dinner a
more fun and enjoyable occasion. The issue was presented to
the brotherhood during a chapter meeting and a decision was
made to ask the wives to join us in this year's dinner. We hope
all returning alumni will feel free to enjoy the dinner with
their wives this year.
The guest speaker this year will be Dr. Dave Joyner and our
M.C. will be George "Bucco" Stewart, both Gamma Phi
alumni. Below is a tentative schedule for the weekend:

FIJI Dominates Lacrosse Team
Our beloved Hummel Fishburn Lodge has for some time
been in desperate need of some major renovations. To accom
modate this need, a May 2 House Corporation meeting was
held during which brother Hal "Brooms" Wilson outlined
some details pertaining to the long awaited renovation pro
gram. In June, the Jack Frost Construction Company of
State College will start work on the chapter house, which
The varsity lacrosse team at Penn State could as easily be
called the Owls as they are called the Nittany Lions. Thirteen
Phi Gams donned lacrosse uniforms in 1981, including five of
the ten starters. And with several stellar performances by Fiji
lacrosse players, Penn State (9-2) boasted the best lacrosse
team in the history of the sport at the school.
Brothers Paul Sullivan '81, Bob Campbell '82, Joe Guterding '82, Doug Bailey '82, Tom Wilke '82, Mark Goulding '82,
Dave Taylor '83, Rob Cooke '83, Steve Schwin '83, Rich
Russo '84, Gary Martin '84, Tom Lion '84, and pledge Mike
Brone '83 played on P.S.U.'s nationally ranked lacrosse team.
Sullivan, while scoring 19 goals and dishing out five assists,
won the coveted Pittenger Award for Penn State's outstanding
senior lacrosse player. A midfielder, "Sully" was one of the
Lions' most potent offensive weapons, and may represent

June.
The planned renovations, which should be completed by
fall, will include revamping the electrical, heating, and
Guterding, the goalie and quarterback of the Lions'
extremely strong defensive unit, made his presence known
throughout the lacrosse world in 1981 as he led the nation
in save percentage during the entire season. Joey won Penn
State's Lockhart Award, given each year to the outstanding
defensive player. Also named as the Lions' most improved
player in '81, Joe was elected as one of next year's tri-captains
by his teammates. He is an extremely strong candidate for
news items, and photographs are always welcome and should be
sent to Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity Alumni Records Office, PO

plumbing systems. Additionally, the program wiU include roof
repair, repair of plaster walls and cedings and replacement of
interior doors, frames, and baseboards. Finally, interior wood
work will be refinished and painting will be done throughout
the house.
Funds for the project have been obtained from the National
Fraternity and various bank loans. It must be noted that this
program is only a repair of the basics that are needed. As it
stands, there are future additional renovations planned as soon
as funds become available. These include furniture, exterior
painting, and landscaping, to name a few.
The current undergraduate brotherhood has grown to hold
dear our experiences in the Hummel Fishburn Lodge as our
most precious college memories, but conditions have made
living in the house less desirable and less economical than
other available alternatives. We need your support, as graduate
brothers of Gamma Phi, in helping restore the chapter house
to the condition it so rightly deserves. We believe this is a
noble request, for it illustrates the very nature of our organi
zation: keeping the past actively involved in the continued
success of Phi Gamma Delta!
All-America honors.
Freshmen sensations Gary Martin and Tom Lion teamed
with each other in the winter pledge class and on attack. As
number one and two in scoring, Martin and Lion brought
phenomenal talent to the position where the Lions were
lacking. Martin, scoring 16 goals and feeding an amazing 40
assists in 11 games, led the team with his 56 points. While
among the nation's top assist men with a 3.63 assist-per-game
average, Gary is a good bet for All-America honors. Lions' 20
goals and eight assists were second to Martin, and Martin's
assists more than often ended with Tommy on the scoring
end.
Gamma Phi officers also have their place among the lexers.
Recording secretary Bob Campbell started on midfield for the
Lions, while historian Tom WOke paced a talented and deep
bench.

Mother's Day A Success
While the '81 lexers were setting school records with eight
consecutive victories and nine season wins, their brothers were
always behind them. It was seemingly a house function for
the brotherhood to attend home games, and the unity of
Gamma Phi's brothers was clearly evident both on the field
and in the grandstand. With only Sullivan being lost to
graduation, this year's success can only lead to more success
in the upcoming years.
Mark S. Goulding '82
Gamma Phi celebrated its annual Mother's Day Weekend
on May 9th and 10th, with many of the brothers' families in
attendance. This year's activities began with a get-together on
Saturday night at the chapter house and, as usual, the combi
nation of our families' enthusiasm, plus the fraternity atmos
phere, set the stage for a fun night.
On Mother's Day, the brothers and pledges prepared a
brunch for over one hundred people. The meeting of the
Mother's Club followed while the fathers, brothers, and

The latest winter pledge class was officially sworn in as
pledges last December 7th. Though they began their journey
to becoming brothers as relative strangers, they were all bound

The returning undergraduate brothers would like the entire
fraternity to know that the following young men will be heard
Eric Slade Chambers - Initiated in December of '79, Slade
has been actively involved in IM's and served as social chair
man in the spring of '81. He will be graduating in Business
Logistics.
Kurt Schwoebel - "Kitchen Head", as he was affectionately
known by his brothers, will be sorely missed by all. But surely
no one will miss his no-cheese cheesesteaks! Kurt was presi
dent of his pledge class and served as house caterer for one
term.
Richard Michael Hamscher - Initiated in November, '80,
"Moose" is a marketing major and an active member of the
American Marketing Association. Ricky was honored this
past spring when the brotherhood elected him "Grand
Kahuna" to lead the tribe of Fiji warriors during last year's
Island.
Andrew Vincent Bonner - Initiated April 30, 1980, Andy is
a finance major who has participated in IM football and softball. Being an older brother, Andy has been a settling influ
ence on the house and will be missed in the future. Andy
will be travelling the country this summer with brother Kurt
Schwoebel, so beware if a couple of unexpected guests knock
upon your door!
Scott Russell Sieck - Scott is a labor studies/industrial
relations major who has been actively involved in numerous
campus and town activities. As an undergraduate, Scott was
employed by the Daily Collegian as a business staff member
and sales representative. Additionally, Scott acted as Corning
Glass Work's assistant personnel manager while working on
his internship. We look forward to Scott's continued involve
ment with Gamma Phi!
Kevin Joseph Murray - Initiated October 28, 1978, "Mur"
is graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting.
While a brother, he served as president and treasurer of the
fraternity and was the Joel E. Crouch Award winner. Mur
also won the Phi Gamma Delta Educational Scholarship.
Other campus activities he was involved in were the Interfraternity Council Board of Control, Phi Eta Sigma, Beta
Alpha Psi, and Beta Gamma Sigma. Mur will be starting
employment with Price Waterhouse & Co. in New York in
August.
Samuel David Shelanski - Initiated in the spring of 1978,
"Sid" has been on the half-decade graduation plan majoring
in business management. The self-proclaimed president of the
senior class, Sid has been actively involved in IM's, placing
second in wrestling. He also participated three years in varsity
lacrosse, and has been a member of the Lacrosse Club and
Handball Club. Sid plans to begin employment with Research
Corporation of Philadelphia, PA. Good luck President Sid!

class developed its sense of how to work together, they built
a strong feeling of unity among themselves. This process
really began with their pledge retreat, where they had a chance
to learn about each other and to nuture beginning friendships.
Their duties to the house and its upkeep very successfully
instilled withing them a firm respect for the Lodge, while they
kept it in top shape.
This class also became involved socially in the house, as
their attendance at parties and socials attested. All the pledges
and their dates helped make the Christmas and pledge formats
a smashing success as well. In intramural sports, many of the
new pledges provided talent and support for the basketball,
Softball, football, soccer, and racquetball teams.
One highlight of their pledging period was their bolt, when
they headed out for a weekend at the Cornell chapter of Fiji
in Ithaca, NY. Along with the six accompanying brothers,
the weekend was a great success and a good time was had by
all. After their return, they had before them only a few more
weeks of their important pledging period. It was on April 15,
1981, that the brotherhood of Gamma Phi initiated the class,
after a 15 week pledging period. Below is a list of the proud
new brothers:

"Extending The Order"
The rush program is one of the most important tasks under
taken by the undergraduate chapter. Here at Gamma Phi we
consider rush a privilege because we have a chance to select
young men who show an interest in us as a way to enrich their
collegiate careers.
This year, as in the past, we have received numerous rush
cards and letters from Phi Gam alumni informing us of impres

sive young men on campus. This is a great help to our rush
program and we feel that it is extremely beneficial to the
chapter. We feel a need to hear from graduate brothers who
have a good man in mind to help "extend the order".
If you have a future Fiji in mind contact John F. Mullen,
