With their leadership and the whole Chap
ter's cooperation, Kappa Deuteron has
pointed itself at lofty goals. I believe our
past officers started the Chapter in the
right direction; it will be the new officers'
job to follow through on their predeces
sors' leadership roles and spur the Chapter
towards these new heights. I know myself,
Keith Mason, Buddy Hendrick, Rick
Hawkins, and Lee Crawley are capable of
working together to help the Chapter reach
its goals.
These goals we have for ourselves are

the atmosphere of the Chapter.
How do we reach these intangible
goals? The key to this is motivation. One
type of motivation is external which is
the ability to lead others. Every member
of our Chapter is capable of being a lead
er in that every brother could motivate
others to do something if he only wanted
to do so. Therein lies the problem. We all
have that spark of internal motivation,on

than others. It is my challenge, not only

will take some of the burden (as far as
work load) off the pledge trainer and will
also provide for more new ideas on pledge
to measure. Some words we have all heard
come close to what we are looking for;
brotherhood, pride and Chapter tone. Our
"intangible goals", however, are a mixture
of these three plus some more. The only

Phi Gams to search for that spark, kindle
it, and use it to the best of their ability to
make your Chapter a better representative
of Phi Gamma Delta. I think if we can do
this, then our intangible goals will begin
to be met, if not superceded.

In closing, let me say that I am fired up
about the upcoming year. I am quite hon
ored to have been elected president by the
Chapter. I only hope that I can show the
brothers that they weren't wrong to have
a little faith in me. I realize many Grad
uates may not know me due to my short
tenure in Phi Gamma Delta. In this respect,

Hello sports fans. Hey, all you Gradu

costing more and more money to field a
Top Ten team. All those young athletes
are wanting more and more money to go
with FIJI. We can't afford to buy the 280
ZX's that these guys are demanding, and,
as a consequence, we are becoming very
average in athletics. We realize that with
out winning teams we will lose our Grad
uate support, but to field winning teams
we need bucks—big bucks. There used to
be a day when the only thing that mat
tered was competition—but now we have
to win.
At the end of fall quarter, we found
ourselves in fifth place in the Governor's
League. The general feeling around the
Fraternity was that we would easily recov-

er during winter quarter, and there were
even shouts of,"We're going to win it all,"
reverberating about the house. Alas, our
athletes had become over-confident, and
as a result, we have won only half our
games.
The basketoall team ended their season
at 3-3, as did the bowling team, but the
soccer team will have to win the next two
games to end up at 3-3. The badminton
team and the shuffleboard team both got
hoofed early on, but the cross country
team and weightlifting team have yet to
perform. We are hoping for strong per
formances in each of these areas from
everyone, especially Rusty "Marathon"
Wolf and Keith "Check-my-pecs" Mason.
In conclusion, I feel that if we finish 3-3
in soccer and do well in cross country and
weightlifting, we will finish high enough
to regain the number one position in
Spring.

FIJI has always boasted of having the
sharpest men on campus and this winter
pledge class follows that traditional mold.
Keeping the idea of "unity through diver
sity", the Mu Deuterons are working to get
to know each other and the brothers as
well. Already, they have planned two fund
raising projects to raise money to buy a
gift for the Chapter.
The Mu Deuterons include the follow

I am glad to announce that the Frater

As stated above, the Brothers have de

are nearing completion and as always are
in need of contributions. These may be

cided to auction the grand piano during
Pig Dinner this year. Lately, it has been
used only as a place to put coats and
books. Therefore, in order to help finance
the basement remodeling costs, we will
sell the piano to the highest bidder. The
bidding wiU start at $250, and it is hoped
that this will be looked at as a donation
to the fraternity. Just think how happy
your wife would be if you came home with
a nice addition to your living room. Look
ing forward to seeing each of you at Pig
Dinner.
