Captain, 3rd Alabama Cavalry. In Battles of Shiloh, Chickamauga, Dalton and Atlanta. Second lieutenant commanding troops engaged in first small-arms skirmish of Civil War, May 9, 1861. (Confederate Veteran of Oct. 1909 p. 469 says corporal.) For three years under General Joe Wheeler, ". . . member of that officer's staff of picked men known as the "Elite Corps," which was an organization composed of one commissioned officer and two privates from each company . . . trained by West Point graduates for hazardous and daring duties."
