SOHA UPDATE
By: Randall Whittaker (1970)
I am pleased to report that in spite of the huge
storms this spring and early
summer, the house is still
standing. Under the leadership and guidance of House
Manager Johnny Paxton
(2011), CP James Riter
(2012), Mom Rena, the
Cabinet, and all the responsible and respectful UGs the
closing for summer was well
done.
All junk was removed, the lawn well tended,
all systems shut down correctly and all rooms cleaned.
Thank you all.
We are currently
giving 1123 a well needed
facelift. The facia on the dormer windows is being replaced and the entire exterior wood repainted. This
project will be done by early
August. We will also have
new carpet in the living room
and Housemother’s apartment by the time the doors
are opened for the fall semester. Thanks to Secretary
Michael Martin (2005)
for supervising these projects.
It is hoped that the
only other major expenditure
this fall will be the purchase of
a new commercial freezer.
The basement will be given a
good bleach bath prior to the
Parents Club delivering new
lounge furniture. We are very
fortunate to have such a great
group of parents being actively involved in the wellbeing of Sigma Omicron.
Thank you Moms and Dads!
I am pleased to announce that Rena Sterling
will be returning for another
term as House Mother. This
will be her 6th year serving as
“Fiji Mom.” Rena has brought
excellent organization to the
kitchen, special events, and
“emergency action.” Rena will
continue to monitor the house
during semester breaks and
the summer months. We all
sleep better knowing she is
there.
All SOHA Director
seats are filled and the Board
has been organized into several committees. The purpose
“We are very
fortunate to have
such a great group
of parents being
actively involved in
the well-being of
Sigma Omicron.”
is to widen the span of responsibility for the development of the most important
aspects of SOHA’s governance. If any Graduate
Brother is interested in serving on a committee and eventually filling a Director seat,
please contact me. We have a
place for all loyal and dedicated Grad Bros.
After turning out
many issues of the Sigma
Omicronicle and bring home
“The Coon Plaque” award
from IHQ, Ryan Bebee
(1995) is turning over the
editorial pen to Chris Day
(1980). Thanks BB and best
of luck to Chris.

When I decided to

getting myself into. I am after

have on-line classes, we listened to cassette tapes and we
were ecstatic with a 6 & 6 football season! I wasn’t quite sure
how I’d be accepted by the
undergrads. Of more importance, I wasn’t so sure about
the state of the brotherhood
either. With two semesters

WELCOME PLEDGES!
With pledges from twenty-one different cities, the rush team definitely had their hands full this summer. The soonto-be Phi Deuterons have the potential to make a great impact on Sigma Omicron. They have already shown their
excitement and unity. Members of the pledge class have organized many events, by themselves, to get to know each other
this summer. We are all excited to see what this 39-man pledge class can bring to our brotherhood.

(Continued from page 1)
fidently tell you that the future at 1123
W. University is very, very bright!
One of my favorite quotes from
the movie Remember the Titans is
“Attitude reflects leadership.” If that’s
the case, then our house is in great
shape and I’m not just talking about the
cabinet, a stellar group of young men by
the way. Sigma Omicron is able to boast
that the President of IFC is one of our
own. In addition, our house is full of
“influence leaders”, individuals who can
persuade others without being in an
official position. Each of them has as his
priority the advancement and wellbeing of Phi Gamma Delta and with
their status, their passion spreads
through the house like wild fire.
That passion has created as
sense of ownership and pride in the
house that is inspiring. In my day, the
pledges were solely responsible for the
cleaning of the house. Now, on a regular
basis, the brotherhood joins in with the
pledges during cleanings to ensure our
house looks her best.
Our leaders have also created a
level of brotherhood that continues to
build upon itself. The house participation in campus activities is tremendous.
Whether it’s Spring Sing, Follies, or the
B team flag football game, you can expect the roll-out from the Fiji house to
be remarkable.
We have worked hard to identify opportunities to improve the house.
One area of focus we recognized was the
need for additional training on the use
of alcohol. The cabinet and I worked
together to create an alcohol awareness
presentation that focuses on the effects
of alcohol, the dangers of alcohol poisoning, and what to do if you suspect
someone has had too much to drink. I
will give this presentation twice a semester, once to the pledges and once to
the brotherhood. The initial feedback
from the undergraduates concerning
this training has been very positive.
In summation, Sigma Omicron continues to grow from a position
of strength. We have tremendous leaders and brothers who exhibit a purple
passion that can’t be rivaled. You can
take my word for it, or you can experience it for yourself. I’d like to invite and
encourage you to attend a formal
dinner and chapter with me next
semester. Dinner starts at five and
chapter begins around six. You can

GRADUATE SPOTLIGHT - MAX PISCHEL 1968
Why did you pledge Phi Gamma
Delta?
My dear father Max A. Pischel, Jr.
(1935) was a Phi Gam at OU. His
memories of Phi Gamma Delta were
passed on to me over my years of growing up. When we lived in Denver and
went to the OU / CU games we always
drove by the Phi Gam house in Boulder.
I think there was never a doubt in my
mind if I was offered the opportunity to
be a Phi Gam I would be one.
What is your favorite memory as
an undergraduate?
That is a tough question. There are
many great memories; some of which are
not for publication and thus will not be
mentioned.
I made my grades after two semesters
and was able to join my initial pledge
brothers in the house. The group in my
initiation class and the struggle we had to
make grades, made the passing through
the threshold of the chapter a great
memory. Finally Mike Hill (1968),
Bob Curtis (1968) and I made it.
Russ McNew (1966) and Gordon
Elkins (1967) being initiated is also a
great memory.
A get-together at George Ramey’s
(1966) place during Christmas holidays
is a fond memory. I don’t remember
exactly who was there but believe it was
Gordon Elkins (1967), Bob Curtis
(1968), Danny Deaver (1967),
Charlie Powers (1969) and me.
George had some lobsters flown in. He
steamed them and it was a great feed.
Those there will remember well all of us
sitting on the floor drinking beer and
George’s Saint Bernard. It was a fun
afternoon.
Phil Williams (1969), Joe Bob
Wilson (1969) (both of Bartlesville
origin) and I tried once to see how far we
could go through the underground system of the campus. Fortunately, we
couldn’t go as far as we had anticipated.
What is your favorite memory as a
graduate so far?
My life as a graduate has been extremely
good. Good jobs and interesting locations. One of my favorite memories is
from a few years ago while I was visiting
the Changi War Memorial Museum in
Singapore where Allied soldiers were
interred during the Japanese occupation
of Singapore. In our tour group I noticed
a guy with the PGD Greek letters tattooed
on his ankle. I went up and gave him the
grip and asked him about it. Turned out
he was a very active KU grad. He had
been the Purple Legionnaire and was
active nationally in the Fraternity. His
attitude about tattoos was interesting.
One event that influenced my life took
place when I stayed with Mike Hill
(1968) in Birmingham, AL, right after I
got out of the Army in 1973. Mike
showed me that sales is something that
one can do with some imagination and
some fortitude. I still remember him
telling me how to sell a pencil.
Attending a couple of Pig Dinners with
my father also remains in my memory.
Also attending with my father the Ekklesia in Denver soon after I was initiated is
a great memory. I believe Bob Curtis
(1968), Mike Hill (1968) and maybe
Warren Thomas (1968) were along as
well. Excuse me if I’ve gotten that wrong.
I never forgot my father’s birthday after
that. Driving back to Oklahoma it was his
birthday and I failed to remember it; a
great lesson in life.
Bill Teel (1969) joined me for a golf
event in Texas some years back. What a
great weekend to play golf with Bill. I
think his play kept us in the money.
The Pig Dinner in Stillwater with my
daughter as my date while she was an
OSU student about 2001-02 was fun and
brought me back to campus life. It was a
great event; different in a very good way
from our Pig Dinners when I was an undergraduate.
What kind of influence has the Fraternity had on your life?
Persistence is the greatest influence. I
have Calvin Coolidge’s “Persistence” on a
plaque in my office in my office in Dubai.
With whom do you stay in contact?
As I have been overseas much of my career, it has not been easy to stay in touch.
I have been in irregular contact with Joe
Bob Wilson (1969), Charlie Powers
(1969), Bill Teel (1969), Mike Hill
(1968), George Ramey (1966),
Danny Deaver (1967), Bob Curtis
(1968) (when he was still among us) and
a friend of all the above, Wayne Davis
(not a Phi Gam but a friend of all.)
I ran into Russ McNew (1966) in a
parking lot in Tulsa about ten years ago.
Not a regular contact, but it made me
feel very good that he recognized me
from 50 meters.
When I was transferred to Paris, France,
I was in OKC making sales calls. We had
a brew to discuss it. Bob Curtis
(1968) said, "Max why would you want
to leave Dallas? In Dallas you have the
world's best football team, beautiful
ladies, good bars and great food. Why
would you leave that?!" I said, "Well
Bob, I don't know but I'm going to do
it."
Tell us about your family.
I have two daughters of whom I’m very
proud. The elder attended OSU, was
married in March to a fine young man
from Tarleton State (Pike and an Ag
major) who live in Houston. The
younger went to UT but I still love her.
She also is married to a fine young man
who is also a UT grad and is involved
with Golfsmith. They live in Austin.
I’m not old enough to be a grandfather
yet, but suspect that will come in the
near future.
Did you live in the chapter house?
If so, who were your roommates?
Yes, I lived at 1224, 1123 and in an annex. Roommates were Richard Howell (1967), Pat Gallagher (1966),
Bob Curtis (1968), Charlie Powers
(1969) (I think), and a cast of thousands
when I was a pledge in the dorm room.
Tell us about your career.
As mentioned I was in the Army. I fin(Continued on page 4)

ethnic groups. This has been the most
interesting part of my life.
ished my career as a company commander
in Germany. After that, I started a career
in the freight forwarding industry. My
first job was as a salesman in Dallas. From
there I went to Paris, France, then to Tehran, Iran (where I met and married the
mother of my daughters), then to Singapore, then to Miami, FL, then to Cairo,
Egypt, then to Gatwick Airport, England,
then to Singapore, then to Houston, TX,
then to Fort Worth, TX, then to Singapore
and finally to Dubai, UAE. My current
passport is about ¾ of an inch think and
I’m going for new pages this week. I have
been involved in general management,
sales, and currently the Logistics & Trade
Compliance Manager for J. Ray McDermott Middle East. Other than a one year
contract with Halliburton in Houston, the
current job is really the first assignment
I’ve had that wasn’t directly in the freight
forwarding industry.
I think sometimes about the South Asian
students that we used to see in the library.
Never did I have anything to do with
them. While in Dacca, Bangladesh on a
business trip I was invited to play golf with
our partner there. After golf we went to
the golf club bar and for a cool one. There
were a couple of Bangladeshis there. They
asked where I was from. I asked them
how well they knew the USA geography
(usually I say I’m from Texas as most folks
think they know where Texas is) but this
time I didn’t and I told them I was from
Oklahoma. After some talk, both of the
guys were at OSU the same time I was.
One worked for Phillips Petroleum and
had lived in Bartlesville (where I grew up
as my father worked for Phillips.) This
event was very meaningful to me. It
showed me how insulated I was when at
OSU.
My career has been rewarding. With few
exceptions I have had a wonderful life.
I’ve lived among people of many different
What are your major interests
now?
Interests today are my daughters, my work
and golf. While I’m not a good golfer, it is
an escape in Dubai. I played 18 holes
this morning. It is 101 degrees but
Yahoo tells me it “feels like 113.” Nice
day today.
What are your goals for the next
few years?
My current goal is to keep working.
I’ve no interest in retiring as I need to
keep working.
What is your favorite Pig Dinner
memory?
My favorite Pig Dinner memory is my
father kissing the snout at my first Pig
Dinner. I’ve probably attended six or
seven Pig Dinners since a graduated. I
think any Pig Dinners I have attended
have been great. The one in February
2011 should be an extremely a great
one & very memorable. Right now the
plan is to make the trip from Dubai to
Stillwater for the 2011 Pig Dinner. But
as we say in the shipping industry,
arrival depends on WP AGW (weather
permitting all going well)!

UNDERGRADUATE UPDATE
Sigma Omicron had a successful semester last spring. The
list of achievements includes: first place in Spring Sing with the
women of Kappa Delta, first place among fraternities in athletics for
the spring semester, second place in Varsity Review with the women
of Kappa Alpha Theta, and third place in grades with a GPA of 3.25.
Sigma Omicron has made above the All Men's GPA for the past 21
consecutive years.
Also, recently at the 162nd Ekklesia, Sigma Omicron
received an honorable mention for the Orion H. Cheney Efficiency
Cup. With some recent success, the Undergraduate Chapter strives
to remain proactive and to "Press On" to achieve greater things.
Raising our GPA, improving our communication and organization,
strengthening graduate communications, placing in more University
and International awards--all are on the long list of goals for Sigma
Omicron in the coming semesters.
2010 Grads L to R: Omar Hossain, Tyler Grubbs,

UNDERGRADUATE SPOTLIGHT - JAMES RITER 2012
Why did you choose Oklahoma
State?
Coming out of high school, I knew that I
wanted to pursue a degree in Landscape
Architecture. I toured and considered Oklahoma State’s program as well as Kansas
State’s program. I then compared the universities and their respective programs side
by side. Ultimately, OSU’s program proved a
better fit for my educational desires. OSU’s
Greek life and friendly campus also helped
aid my decision.
Why did you pledge Phi Gamma
Delta?
I pledged Phi Gamma Delta (Fall 08) because Fiji had the most well-rounded membership I saw during rush. Not only is our
house well balanced with different types of
people, but our individual members are
talented in many areas. During recruitment,
many brothers influenced my decision to
pledge Fiji including: Garret Thomas
(2011), Joe Goolsby (2011), Brent
Morris (2009), Jonathan Allison
(2010), and Omar Hossain (2010). I
also got to meet three recent graduates who
had just taken salary positions with Koch
Industries. Meeting these men—Aaron
Wilson (2008), Tate Johnson (2008),
and Matt Drouhard (2008)—also had a
great impact on me during rush. Fiji’s reputation with women at OSU was also very
impressive to me. Of the several women that
I spoke to regarding Greek life, they all advised that Fiji was the best choice.
people as possible, and get more involved
in extracurricular activities than I was in
high school. Fiji put me around the right
people to help me do this. Fiji has helped
me to be more involved socially, refine
some leadership skills with many opportunities and has provided me with some of
the best friends I will ever make.
As my time at OSU and Fiji has progressed,
I have come to realize how Fiji has helped
improve many aspects of my life. Organization, communication, time management,
people skills—all and more have been enhanced through my experiences with the
Fraternity. My role as president has been a
challenging and humbling one. I believe it
to be one of the most valuable experiences
in my life, and I truly love serving my fellow brothers in this way.
What activities were you involved in
during college?
During my freshman year, I tried to get
involved in several activities on campus. I
was a member of Collegiate Entrepreneurs
Organization, American Society of Landscape Architects, Horticulture Club, Orange Peel Committee, Homecoming Steering Committee, Junior Greek Life, and
Knights of Columbus through St. John’s
Catholic Church. I have since narrowed my
activities to ASLA, PLANET (club for landscape contractors), Knights of Columbus,
and of course Fiji.
What is your favorite memory as an
undergraduate?
There are way too many to count. I’ll discuss
one of them. NUJI Cup—an annual basketball game played between Fiji’s pledge class
and Sigma Nu’s pledge class—was one of my
favorite memories from pledgeship. It was
the first opportunity we had to represent the
house. Nearly, the whole house was there
“Pumping Purple”, as Randall Whittaker
(1970) would say. You could really see and
feel how passionate the older members were
about the house. Winning the game definitely made the event a great one. Currently,
Fiji is 4-0 going into the fifth year of this
tradition.
Tell us about your family.
Both of my parents attended Oklahoma
University. My dad, Johnny Riter, graduated with degrees in Microbiology and
Chemical Engineering and my mom, Renee
Riter, received a Bachelor of Arts in German with a minor in French. My dad has
since then received his Masters in Business
Administration; he has worked for Koch
Industries for about 23 years and is currently the Director of Operational Excellence for Koch Business Solutions. I also
have two sisters, Jenny and Michele. Jenny
is currently pursuing a Law Degree at
Oklahoma University. Michele will be a
sophomore at Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic
High School.
What kind of influence has the Fraternity had on your life?
Fiji has had a great impact on my life. Being
from out of state, I knew hardly anyone at
OSU. Pledgeship gave me a great opportunity to be more outgoing and proactive. I
tried to make sure I could meet as many
Tell us about your career.
I currently own a landscape company—
Groundbreaking Lawn & Landscape, LLC—
based out of Wichita, KS. After graduating,
I plan to grow the company both vertically
and horizontally. At some point, I would
like to start a design firm that would grow
to include professionals other than
Landscape Architects such as: Architects and Civil Engineers. I am currently considering and researching an
ecommerce business venture.
What are your major interests
now?
While the mantra of “Scholarship,
Fraternity, Self” sometimes leaves me
little room for self, I enjoy sports
(especially basketball), landscaping,
and spending time with friends. I enjoy
constantly challenging myself to improve, whether it is personally, academically, in the business world, or in
Fraternity life. I would have to say,
however, most of all I enjoy spending
time with my friends including: my
fraternity brothers, family, my wonderful girlfriend, and other friends.
Goals Over the next few years:
Over the next few years, I have several
goals that I want to achieve. Prior to
graduating, I want to make my first
investment in Real Estate by purchasing a rental house here in Stillwater.
Within the next few years I also would
like to launch an online business for
which I am currently working on a
business plan. Lastly, within two years
of my graduation date, I want to become a registered Landscape Architect.
This process requires two years of
work under a registered Landscape
Architect, as well as, completion of the
Landscape Architect Registration Examination (LARE). I most likely will
return to Wichita within 5 years of
graduating, but maybe sooner.
