Winter 2010
RETURN TO THE END OF THE SLANT
Highlights
By: Mike “Beavo” Bevis (1970)
It may have been
50 years, 40 years, 25
years or maybe just 5
years, but the feeling is
still the same. Make the
turn off route 73 onto
route 27 and then turn left
at Cook Field. Now as you
drive up High Street into
Oxford, the heart starts to
beat a little faster as you
reach Slant Walk. It might
have been the day you
pledged, the day you went
active, or the day of puddle pull practice or Greek
Week. It could have been a
memory of Fiji Island or
just the fun of the porch
club. And that is when you
realize that it is not for
college days alone. What-
ever you learned, experienced, loved, remembered
or now visualized, friendship is the sweetest influence. Yes, the water tower
is gone and the CI is now
CJ’s but 130 East High… it
is good to be home.
And so is the case
now, three years after our
50th anniversary at the
End of the Slant. Many of
us went from celebration
to depression following
the problems in the house
a few years ago. But the
good news is that in these
three short years, strength
and vibrancy have returned to 130 East High
Street. A strong group of
brothers, bolstered by a

new incoming class, now
bring renewed hope and
optimism to all Fijis.
Despite the overwhelming odds of such a
turn around, the house
has been refurbished,
fixed up and brought back
to life. It is quite amazing
the job that the team
headed by Allan Payne
(1968), George Simonds
(1959), Steve Unger (1975)
and your House Corporation have done. Phase I of
the house renovations
have been completed
thanks to over $122,000
from grads and House
Corp trustees. Here is
what you will see:

included:

Phase I renovation is now complete
and the house looks great.
Plumbing has been
rebuilt;

•
Major electrical work has been
completed with new lighting in
living room;
•
Re-implementation and physical relocation of ADT system
and alarms;
•
Vast wall repair and painting on
all three floors;
•
Rebuilding of floor joists and
flooring;
•
Carpeting for the entry way
stairs and all three floors;
•
Gutting, rebuilding, decorating
of West and East and Phi;
•
Major repair of old woodwork;
•
Significant work on kitchen and
2nd/3rd floor bathrooms;
•
New furniture for Barr Room and
living room;
•
Flat screen TVs for Barr Room
and adjacent rec. room;
•
Barr, Darrow, Davis, Ebeling,
Howell, Payne, Staff, Thiele,
Thompson, Werner, plaque is
back on the wall.
There are pictures and mirrors on the walls and new area rugs.
Furniture and mirrors will make you
think you are in a nice home and
guess what? Welcome home. The Library has also been painted with new
lights and a new picture of Gamma.
A new beautiful ornate cherry wood
case now houses Gamma.
Yes, if you have not been to
the Fiji House in three years, get ready
for a major upgrade. You will think
that the Saturday a.m. work crew has
been hard at work for months. There
are still other “face-lift” items that are
being addressed in the near future,
such as painting the outside of the
house, renovating the basement, upgrading the kitchen, new entry way
flooring, additional carpeting and upgrading the first floor ladies room.
But these “Phase II” face lifts will cost
an additional $50,000. Still more major replacements must be addressed.
Brothers, despite recently
coming back on campus, you will be
glad to know that Phi Gamma Delta is
regarded as one of the top fraternities!
Recently, both the university and
other fraternities and sororities have

recognized this. I think you will be
proud when you return for the Pig
in April.
Most recently Chapter
President Britt Barclay put forth
some excellent objectives for the
house:
•
Achieve over a 3.1 semester
GPA for the chapter.
•
Create a philanthropy. A small
philanthropy that raised $100
has been started, but we are
looking to do something else
on a larger scale.
•
Raise enough funding to
get Phase II of the house renovation started this year.
However, the most pressing issue is the renovation of the
kitchen. With upwards of 35 people
living in the house next year, a full
functional kitchen will go a long
way in the ability to function effectively.
The latest pledge class of
28 puts us at a total of over 80
men; with a fall pledge class taken
at the end of March, we will add
even more men before Pig Dinner
and the end of the year.
This year, we took third in
the homecoming house decorating
contest and had a top 10 finish in
Greek Week despite having a chapter size of 42 at the time.
Pig Dinner will be April
23-25. All House Officers are really
looking forward to meeting all of
our graduate brothers and hope
you are excited to come back to
campus and see what we have been
able to do in just eight months be-

ing back on campus. If you want a
tee-time for golf, contact Steve Unger
at 937-623-6284.
Brothers, despite the miraculous efforts and accomplishments over the past year, there is still
much to be addressed. We are at a
standstill without more funding. The
center section of the house will need
to be gutted and replaced. This will
not be easy and will have to be
funded by each of our graduate
brothers. Many thanks go out to each
of you who have bellied up to the bar
in the past five years with donations
to get the ball rolling. Any and all
funds are appreciated in ways that
you will never know. However we are
not even halfway home. So while it is
expected that each of you will return
to PGD for the PIG, be ready to learn
about the needs of the house both in
the physical plant and the financial
area.
I am proud to be a Fiji and
look forward to seeing everyone in a
few months. While we can reflect on
the experiences that we shared at 130
East High, now we need all of us to
remember “Not for college days
alone.” Enjoy the renovated house,
meet the new brothers, and then look
to the next 50 years at the End of the
Slant.

PHASE II BEGINS THIS SUMMER - CAN YOU HELP?
By: Allan “Alphonse” Payne (1969)
“Last year we raised
over $122,000.
We know we can do
this if we all pull
together!”
Phase I of renovating the
house is now complete and much has
been done. Living Room, Barr
Room, Library, East, West, Phi, 2nd
and 3rd floor hallways and bathrooms, mail room, trophy room and
east and west dorms have all been
upgraded or totally renovated.
The Phase II "to do" list
includes: painting outside of house,
renovating the kitchen, basement,
women's rest room, and a variety of
other tasks.
We need to get started
now on our goal this year of
$50,000 to begin Phase II this
summer. Last year we raised over
$122,000. We know we can do this if
we all pull together!
If you gave last year, we
thank you and ask you to consider
a 2nd gift. If you have not, we ask
you to consider sending a much appreciated gift now to get it done.
Use the form on the
back of this newsletter to send
your donation to assist with
Phase II. Make your check payable
to "Mu Upsilon Association" and use
the enclosed return envelope.
By the way - the latest 28
man pledge class (one of the best on
campus!) takes us to a chapter of
82. We are back! Reserve April 23
-25 for Pig Dinner!
