For the second consecutive year we

in years, we do not have to sweat over
health inspections, the kitchen is in ac
cord with all health and safety codes.
During the past two years, we have ad
ded a new floor, dishwasher, freezer,
and refrigerator.
In the living room, much of the
house spent a weekend taking out the
tile floor and refinishing the wood
beneath. The Alpha Phi Board pur
chased couches, chairs, and area rugs
to fit in with the traditional decor. New
carpeting was bought for the senior
seating, the paneling was ruined by the
mud from the flood, and the ceiling is
collapsing in three seperate spots.
Much, if not all, of the Walter B. Rea
addition needs new carpeting, what is
there is torn and stained. And finally,
we must purchase new beds and desks
before next fall. We do not have
enough for the sixty-eight men we ex
pect in September. I doubt that when
the house was built ninety years ago
the builders ever dreamed that this
house would be under the stress of

In a further effort to provide services
for our graduates, the undergraduates
of the Alpha Phi Chapter are compiling
an up-to-date graduate directory,
similar to the one published in 1977.
The new directory is due out this fall,

Chapter Room Restoration
Perhaps our top priority, and a pro
ject that will be undertaken before
classes begin, is the chapter room.
Brother Mark Palmer ('85) analyzed
our needs and problems in the chapter
room, and drafted plans for restora
tion. The ceiling, floor and walls are in
dire need of repair. Officer furniture
will be rebuilt, and seating expanded.
Brother Palmer plans for two levels of
seating throughout the chapter room,
utilizing all room space. As our chapter
continues to expand, more room is
needed. The areas in which winter
flooding occurred have since been
repaired.
Landscaping Beautifies House
Brother Jim Yagle ('85) spent a
number of summer hours planning and
finally re-working the front yard land
scape. New shrubs have been added,
and the front yard has never looked
better. Jim has also developed plans for
an outdoor patio area. Construction
could begin in the Fall.
In conjunction with the Alpha Phi
Board, the old house will be rewired in
the Fall.

the School fo Natural Resources, and
the School of Music; all three lost
15-25% of their annual allocations. Yet
through all this, U of M programs are
still ranked with the best in the country
and expansion of the University's
physical plant is continuing. This year
will also mark the first time in the past
few years that tuition will not be raised
more than ten percent.
Construction Underway
During their last few meetings, the
Regents approved Vice Prdsident
James Brinkerhoff's proposals for two
major construction projects, an addi
tion to Tappan Hall to house the Fine
Arts Library and a new chemistry
building, to be built on the former site
of the women's gymnasium. The
chemistry building is to be constructed
directly east of the current building and
connected by an underground library.
Construction has already begun on an
addition to the business school, a new
medical center, and an engineering
metallurgical institute. The Regents
also heard that Phase I of the School of
Engineering's move to North Campus
will be completed by the start of the
next school year. The entire school will
be there within two years except for the
engineering library and one other
building.

dition, plastering the ceiling in the
game area, and re-staining the front

In addition, new rugs have been pur

These renovations have occurred on

two years have seen a number of

The
Alpha Phi Chapter
will
reconvene as a democratic body on
September 11, with two major items of
business: performance evaluation and
future objectives.
Under
the direction
of President
Michael Spaulding ('83) the Alpha Phi
Chapter "retreated" one year ago to
evaluate our chapter performance. By
laws were re-worked and house policy
set. The results led to Alpha Phi's
recapture of the Stagg Award and three
victories at Academy. President Harry
Walter will continue this concept,
leading the chapter into "Retreat '83',
with positive results expected.
Retreats Held
The cabinet held its own retreat in
February to outline each officer's
duties, and develop a list of priorities.
Topping that list were chapter spirit,
brotherhood, gradute relations and
philanthropy.
We have attained our immediate
goals. Within two weeks the chapter
will again convene to establish business
for the coming year and beyond. Big
plans are expected.

"I would like to emphasize to you and
to this year's officers what a great
pleasure I had last year. It may have
been as long as 30 years since I had

did a wonderful job in making a very
old grad at home and provided discus

I hope you can pass on to graduates,
old and young, who have not made a
practice of attending the Pig Dinner the
expectation that each will enjoy the
trip to Ann Arbor, seeing the House,
and being with a fine group of active
and graduate Phi Gams. It was great."
