Major House
Improvements
Recently several significant improvements have been made to the
Lambda Chapter House. Carpeting and
paneling have been installed in the
halls on second and third floors which
has greatly improved the looks of the
halls as well as making them much
quieter. In addition, our house corporation provided the funds to restore
our troubled heating and plumbing
systems to proper working conditions.
And finally, the problems which have
caused flooding in our basement the
past three years have been solved once
and for all.
Lambda 1984-85 pledge class.
The mighty purple thunder boomed with excellence during rush again
this year and was rewarded with 22
new pledges to go with our three
spring pledges. The 1984-85 pledge
class of Lambda is:
Donald Adams '88
William Davis '88
Eric Doolittle '88
Brian Elson '88
Steve Franz '88
Tom Hausmann '87
Dave Holub '87
Doug Hovland '88
Doug Ingersoll '88
Michael Jeffries '88
Mark Johnson '88
Devin Koch '88
Russel Lamore '88
John Malloy '87
Gary Martin '88
Byron Morton '88
Brooks Murphy '88
Will Shier '88
Joe Short '87
Jim Silkworth '88
Phil Stannish '87
Mike Stockus '88
Mike Stratton '88
Kurt Ward '88
Robert Wunderlich '88
Once again Lambda is pleased with
its diverse pledge class which includes
a varsity wrestler, a varsity baseball
player, a football player, three varsity
swimmers, a cross-country runner as
well as a prominent member of the
DePauw Sailing Club. The pledges
have moved in and become a vital
element in the house. We wish them
our best during their probationary
period. ·
This shows the "new look" of the halls at
Lambda chapter. The new carpeting was
installed this summer and the paneling was
installed by the brothers this fall.

President's Report
The end of the 1983-84 academic
year and the beginning of 1984-85 has
been a very eventful time for Lambda
chapter. It has provided much success
in areas such as scholastics, extracurricular activities, social life, and
"Little 500", as well as presented
Severa cnallenges for the coming
semester.
Last spring, Phi Gamma Delta
maintained its academic standing in
fourth place among the twelve DePauw
fraternities for the second semester in a
row. This was an important accomplishment since we had been in eleventh
place only a year ago. Our improvement was recognized at the 126th
Ekklesia where Lambda chapter received fourth place in the Owen Cup
competition for scholastic improvement. We do feel, however, that further
academic improvement can and will
occur, and this is a major chapter goal
for the semester.
In addition, more and more brothers are becoming actively involved and
taking leadership roles on many of the
various campus organizations. Fijis
participate on almost all campus
groups and several brothers, such as
Sean Major, President of Junior Board,
are becoming campus leaders.
The biggest excitement of last
semester
undoubtedly
centered
around "Little 500" week when, for the
first time ever, the "Rolling Purple
Thunder" reigned victorious in the
annual bike racing event. The Fiji riders,
consisting of Tom Bayer '84, P.J.
Stanish '85, Garn Huggins '86, and Ned
Sizer '87, came back from an accident
which left them over a lap behind to
blow by the leaders and win in a very
exciting race. The spirit of the chapter
was at a peak after this victory and the
party that f011owedthe race will nOt
soon be forgotten by the DePauw
community. Our Little 500 success set
the stage for the traditional "Fiji Isle"
event two weeks later which continues
to be the most popular campus housedance.
Although having the opportunity to
host the two best DePauw social events
of the year, all within two weeks of each
other, was a much cherished luxury, we
abused the privilege and this lead to
social probation for the semester. This
disciplinary action was taken by the
university because of the noise complaints received from several of our
neighbors.
The probation has brought about
many constructive changes to Lambda
chapter operations this semester.
We've had to become a much more
public relations oriented chapter by
improving our image with neighbors,
the administration, the faculty, and the
Greencastle community. We've had
successful cook-outs inviting neighborhood families, more faculty and
administrative dinners, and several
community service projects are being
planned. The chapter will be sponsoring Thanksgiving and Christmas

Intellect Abounds at Lambda Goes Hi-Tech
A special thank you from the underPhi Garn!
Greetings Alums! The 1984-85
academic year finds us in the unfamiliar spot of defending a campus
leading G.P.A. The challenge of ~ain
taining a G.P.A. that placed us m the
top third of all fraternities, is welcomed
by all Phi Garns. Our successful Rush,
which resulted in our pledging 26
erudite young lads has raised our
expectations for the upcoming semester! Our road to academic achievement
has been recently paved with the
addition of a new house computer. Our
chapter library is currently in renovation to improve the study atmosphere
through new carpeting and lighting.
These physical improvements accompanied with the pride and schol~rly
attitude of all the brothers promises
to make this semester a success.
Mark J. Sifferlen
Scholarship Chairman
graduate members and pledges of
Lambda to the graduate brothers who
put time and money into obtaining
a computer terminal for the chapter
house. This terminal will be linked by
telephone to the university DIGIT AL
VAX system. This will allow brothers
and pledges to use their accounts and
do computer work from the Fiji library
rather than the Math and Science
Center. Special thanks to Phillip Smith,
'59, for all his hard work and thank you
all for your continued support.
(con 't. from page 2)
programs for local underprivileged
children, a campus and citywide
Alcohol Awareness program, several
community service work projects as
well as our traditional philanthropies.
We feel that these efforts will soon
restore Phi Gamma Delta's reputation
in the DePauw community. In fact,
these efforts have already been rewarded.
Recently, the probation was reduced to
end on October 15, 1984, instead of
February 1, 1985, largely because of the
progress we have made with these
efforts. Obviously the shortened
probation was great news to us and the
chapter is greatly indebted for the
Graduate Brother input which made
the rewards possible. Our Board of
Chapter Advisors, presided over by
Jeff Millard '81, which met twice over
the summer months provided the ideas
which made up our successful "Noise
Program." This is yet another example
of how our growing graduate support
and involvement has benefitted the
undergraduate chap!e_r, __
This is an exciting time for the
brothers at Lambda chapter. We have a
great pledge class, have made many
physical house improvements, have
become more involved on campus and
in the community, and have everincreasing graduate support. We also
have begun to achieve that important
balance between strong academics and
our traditionally impressive social
calendar. We're extremely proud of our
growth but we want you, our graduate
brothers, to share our pride. Please take
a look at the dates listed in this Tiger Fiji
and make plans to visit the chapter at
least once this year. This is very important to us because when we meet
and share experiences with our
Graduate Brothers of all ages we gain
an appreciation for the continuity of
tradition that makes this fraternity so
great, and makes us even more " proud
to be a Fiji!"
Fraternally,
Dave Schmitz '85

Artist's representation of Fiji's "Wall of Fame"
Lambda Plans "Wall of Fame"
In our continuing efforts to keep Phi
Gamma Delta ahead of all on campus,
we have decided to improve some of
the structure of our chapter. We are
trying to erect a "Wall of Fame" in
honor of outstanding Phi Garns here at
Lambda. The wall will include all awards
and honors won by Lambda from
International Headquarters, photographs of our various chapter houses,
and of prominent Lambda Fijis as well
as All-American status for athletes.
We would also like to have a copy of
a small composite from every year
possible. We have copies from 1976 to
the present as well as a few scattered
years, so we need some help here. If
you have any old composites it would
be appreciated. Also, copies can be
made if you wish to have the original
returned.
The cost of the project is quite steep
since we are trying to pay for this
ourselves (without House Corporation)
and it would be welcomed if you could
donate a few dollars in care of the "Wall
of Fame" to help offset the cost of
mounting, framing, and finishing of
these awards and honors.
We hope to have much of this work
completed by Pig Dinner 1985 and
extend an invitation to all to return and
reminisce over photographs of brothers in your class. We thank you for any
contributions.
