Brothers from 1946-51 Reunite
A reunion dinner was held the night before the 1991 Norris Pig Dinner in Corvallis. Twenty-five brothers came from three west
coast states, as well as Nevada. Byron Diesselhorst, '45, made the longest trip, traveling from San Diego, California. This group
of brothers had not met for many years, and some had not seen each other since World War II days. Chuck Gassman and Jim Collins,
both '46, and many others, deserve credit for this event.

1992 Norris Pig Dinner
Brothers, 1 am co-chairman, along with graduate brothers
Jim Collins and Chuck Gassman, for the 1992 Norris Pig Din
ner. This year's dinner is going to be one of the best in history.
The dinner will be held on Sunday, April 26. The location
is O'Callahan's restaurant at Nendels Inn. Once again, we will
be having a golf tournament at OSU's Trysting Tree golf course.
You had better practice so you can beat last year's winners!
Details about the weekend were mailed in early April. Please
mail your reservation, including the names of those you want
to have in your playing group for the tournament, to Jeff Hellner,
348 NW 25th St., Corvallis, OR 97330.
There were 147 brothers at the 1991 dinner — let's break
that record! I look forward to meeting you. Fiji is not for college
days alone! — Jeff Hellner, Graduate Relations Chairman
Rush Report
Rush is again upon us, and we look forward to the most ex
citing and successful rush program ever. We eagerly anticipate
great participation (an essential key to a successful rush, as you
know)from both the graduate brothers and the undergraduates.
Recognizing that the graduate referral system plays an
elemental role in the formal rush process, we are revising this
program. We wish to utilize this resource to its fullest potential.
We plan to contact all graduate brothers with program details.
Also, we have planned for committee members to be rushing
in strategic locations up and down the west coast. We are par
ticularly excited about our rush headquarters — four brothers
sharing a summer apartment in Portland that will serve as a com
munications and planning base. This nucleus will be primarily
responsible for planning and motivating "Team Fiji" to provide
for a successful 1992 rush. — Jimmy Robinson, Rush Chairman

Gilfillan Award to Sandine
The Fall 1984 Beaver Fiji contained the following stor^;:
"Contributions by the family and friends of the late dean of
science, F. A. Gilfillan, have made possible the establishment
of the F A, Gilfillan Memorial Awardfor Distinguished Scholar
ship in Science. This new award will honor a faculty member
in the OSU college of science for distinguished scholarship
achievement in science over an extended period of time. The
award carries an award of $1,000.**
The 1991 Gilfillan Award winner is Dr. William E. Sandine,
professor of microbiology. Sandine received a BS from Iowa State
Jedediah Larson, held a dinner on January 13 to recognize
scholarship achievement. Meals were prepared according to the
grades each individual received. A GPA from 4.0 to 3.5 received
a steak dinner, from 3.49 to 3.0 received roast beef, 2.99 to 2.5
received a hamburger, 2.49 to 2.0 received a bowl of beans, and
anyone who earned below a 2.0 received a bowl of mush.
Prizes were also awarded to recognize achievement. The
member of each pledge class who received the highest GPA was
awarded a prize from Campus Connection, a local Greek novel
ty store. Winners included Cory Brisbin (freshman), Jedediah
Larson (sophomore), and Joel Kachmarek (junior). Two scholar
ships, $100 and $200, were awarded to the live-out and live-in
who had the highest level of scholastic achievement during the
fall term. Live-out Mark Hill edged out Glenn Garland and Scott
Duckett by just .02. Jedediah Larson won the live-in award.
There were many other scholarship highlights. Tony
Johnson, Dave Vogt, and Jason Shaw gained admission to the
professional level of the engineering school, and junior Jung Lee
was inducted into Phi Delta Chi, a professional pharmacy frater

in 1950, an MS from North Carolina State in 1955, and a PhD
from OSU in 1958. He*s been at OSU since receiving his PhD
and is famous for developing virus infection resistant strains in
cheese cultures. His work means multiple millions of dollars in
savings from spoilage in the cheese industry. The various cultures
have been patented and produce significant income to Oregon
State.
Many of us remember Doc Gilfillan as our faculty (scholar
ship) advisor from the 1930s through the 1970s. Many also
remember Bill Sandine, who is a member of the Fiji class of 1950
at Iowa State. Thanks, Bill, for your continuous dedication and
years of advising KO pledges and others who need help from
a mature and sympathetic source. "Doc** was that to me and
for several generations of KO members. Congratulations upon
receiving one of the most prestigious faculty awards at OSU. In
