From Mattern: "i[nitiated] June 10, 1860 . . . enlisted, Oct. 22, 1861, Erie, Pa., as 1st lieut., Co. F, 11th Regt. Pa. Vols.; Feb. 14, 1863, promoted to adjutant; to capt., Co. F, May 16, 1863; to brevet major and lieut-col., Mar. 13, 1865; wounded, Oct. 28, 1863, Wauhatchie, Tenn., in right leg and sigt of right eye by explosion of shell; also, May 15, 1864, Resaca, Ga., in right hand; participated in battles of Army of Potomac until after Gettysburg; Sept. 24, 1863, sent to reinforce Rosecrans' Amry of the Cumberland and thereafter in all battles in Tenn., and on Sherman's March to the Sea; mustered out with Co., July 19, 1865 . . . ."
