In 1861 enlisted and elected captain "Quitman Guards" in Holmesville, MS. Consolidated into 16th Mississippi Infantry, promoted to lieutenant, adjutant, then major. Moved to the 4th Mississippi Cavalry (Stockdale's), and was appointed lieutenant colonel. Severely wounded in the Battle of Harrisonburg [or Harrisburgh?], July 14, 1864. Later US congressman.
