Chaplain, 53rd Pennsylvania. For six weeks delegate of the U.S. Christian Commission, including time at Fredericksburg. "My commission at that time would not secure me permission to go to the front nor transportation for supplies. Mr. Stanton allowed me to go to the front, that I might serve as temporary chaplain to the 53rd . . . in which my brother was, and the commission gave me transportation for my supplies."
