Dear Rushee;
In the next few days, you will make a decision concerning
participation in fraternities that will nateonly affect your remaining
years at Knox, but will more than likely be an influential factor in
your life, whether it be in the acedemic, business, or social worlds.
With the understanding that you will not make this decision on the basis
of haphazard reflection and deliberation, we here at Phi Gamma Delta
hope to acquaint you with the benefits to be derived from joining a
fraternity.
Certainly any club's special interest groups or fraternal
organization's first and mast important obligation is to satisfy the
needs and desires of it's members. Obviously, there is more to this,
in the case of fraternities, than providing for a place to sleep.
What fraternities are actually about is the building of men of strong
character; men who are honest, generous, open minded, hard working,
and morally responsible. This is done by becoming intimately
associated with men who have something more to offer than friendship,
we term brotherhood. Certainly any institution of higher learning
is likewise committed to these goals for both men and women, but
those of us in fraternities believe that the close personal
relationships that developethrough brotherhood better aid individual men in
solving problems on the way to these goals than can the rigors of academic
pursuits alone. Certainly close friends in dormitories may develop
something like this feeling of brotherhood but without the reassuring
feeling of permanence and purpose of a strong fraternity these feelings
can fadeaaddgmay ultimately be served after graduation. Fraternities
facilitate the maintenance of these ties by providing for a common,
always open meeting place for alumni and by being a place to which
old
"brothers" can point to with a sense of mutual accomplishment. It
We at Phi Gamma Delta think we fulfill this goal as well as
any other fraternity, along with such important secondary goals thaa
naturally follow after the serious pursuit of the first as community
service and intellectual accomplishment. It is for you to decide
whether we are the type of people who can help you toward becoming a
better man. Come see us and feel free to ask questions. I personally
will do my best to answer any questions or hear any argument relevant to
the fraternity system that you may have. Good Luck
Sincerely,
Thomas W. O'Neal
