###

The “Old” Sigma Chapter was officially chartered by the Fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta at the Western University of Pennsylvania - now the University of Pittsburgh. The chapter founders, referred to as the “Fantastic Five”, were John Haber McCandless 1864, Robert S. Sill 1866, John R. Wightman 1865, Howard M. Howe 1866, and George I. Whitney 1864.  “Old” Sigma chapter gave up her charter in 1870.

The “Pi Sigma” chapter was founded through the efforts of the Omicron (Pittsburgh) Graduate Chapter established at the 1898 Ekklesia in Pittsburgh.  Samuel Black McCormick, a brother from Alpha Chapter and Chancellor of the University of Pittsburgh at the time, was very instrumental.  He helped form the Phi Zeta Phi local fraternity that, after numerous petitions to Phi Gamma Delta, was officially chartered on December 29, 1916.  There were numerous graduates involved from numerous chapters that resided in Pittsburgh at the time.  Roland McCrady was also important to the chapter and helped finance the chapter house in 1919.  Pi Sigma Chapter gave up its charter in 1998.

The “new” Pi Sigma chapter was officially chartered on February 9, 2019.
