"My chapter is the 100th chartered in Phi Gamma Delta." That depends on how you look at it.

 

The International Headquarters assigns an administrative number to each chapter. This is based loosely on chronological order, and starts with Alpha Chapter as 101. One might assume that a chapter numbered 240 was the 140th chapter chartered by the Fraternity. That is close but not quite true.

 

We have added - and removed - chapters from the historical record in the past few years, based on current research. So the chronological numbers are now off by two or three.

 

And if we want to get really picky, some chapters chartered multiple times - "rechartered" - after the chapter lapsed. A few were chartered, and never installed. And should we count our Alpha Chapter at Washington and Jefferson as one chapter, or two? It was formed when Washington College merged with Jefferson College, consolidating our Alpha and Beta Chapters.

 

To confuse the whole situation, in the past several decades chapter chartering banquets (and The Phi Gamma Delta magazine) welcomed a new chapter as, say, the "109th chapter." Earlier that day there were 108 active chapters. Cumulatively speaking, we had chapters at many more institutions.

 

According to the following list, 180 different institutions hosted active Phi Gam chapters. A few - those marked by an asterisk - are now defunct, superseded, or merged. And please note, we used the institution's original name at the time of the chapter's founding. See our more complete list of chapters in chronological order. An asterisk indicates a defunct college.
