THIRTEEN PLEDGES ADDED TO THE
CHAPTER ROLL DURING FALL RUSH
The 1962 Fall Rush culminated in the
addition of thirteen promising candidates
for future membership pledged to Delta Xi.
At present they are striving faithfully to up
hold the past traditions and standards set
by the previous pledge classes of the chap
ter.
Our rushing chairman, Steve Booth '64
Oakland, deserves a vote of thanks for his
untiring work during the informal Summer
The new pledges are: (from left to right) Pete

rush and the formal Fall period.
The chapter would also like to extend
their appreciation once again to the many
graduates who, through their recommen
dations, contributed greatly to the success
of the Fall rush.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
(Bob Schlieman '63)
It is my pleasure to report that the undergraduate chapter is in fine condition»
If'inancially, we closed last spring with approximately seven hundred dollars in the
bank. Our thanks go to our very capable house manager, Bob Cresap, '63. Steve
Booth '64 also did an outstanding job as rush chairman, as we pledged thirteen men'
this fall,
Scholastically, our Spring semester house average was a great improvement over
our efforts last Fall, and we have made various changes in our scholarship program
in hopes of stimulating further improvement this Fall,
On October 13th, Phil Durbrow '64, Pebble Beach; Steve Robertson '65, San Fran
cisco; and Bob Urrea '63, San Francisco, were duly initiated into the active chapter.
We would like to express our thanks to those of you who contributed to the alumni
dues program last year. We collected nearly one thousand dollars, by far the greatest
amount since the program was initiated. This money covered the majority of the cost
of printing and mailing last years issues of the "Norris Fiji", and we hope that in the
future the dues will cover the entire cost.
Last year we had less than forty alumns at the "Pi g Dinner", which, needless to
say, is very disappointing, since the "Pig" was founded at Delta Xi, This year we are
going all out to make the dinner a memorable event, and we hope to have two hundred
alumni in attendance. Working with the Alumni Advisors, we have set the date for
March 23rd, which happens also to be University Charter Day. Jim Lang, well-known
disc-jockey on KSFO and brother Phi Gam, has agreed to be master of ceremonies.
We are planning to ask a member of each graduating class to be responsible for getting
his brothers here for the "Pig", We will give you more information in the next issue
of the "Norris Fiji", but remember the date and plan to be there.
If you are planning to come to the Big Game, we cordially invite all of you to attend
the biennial luncheon sponsored by the Mother's Club, The buffet luncheon will begin
at eleven-thirty, Dr op by anytime!!!

RANDOLPH SEVEIR '23, LEADER IN MARITIME
INDUSTRY,
But he was quickly tapped for promotion as assistant freight clerk for a Matson ship
on the Honolulu run. After three years at sea, he settled in Hilo to run a bus company
on the island of Hawaii. The tourist boom was just starting, and not only Matson but
the then-rival Los Angeles Steamship Co. was pouring sightseers into Hilo
The problem was to get them up to the rim of the island's volcano and over to the
picturesque coffee belt at Kona. Within a couple of years, Sevier had the Hawaiian
Transportation Company overhauled, re-equipped, and making money, starting as
manager and becoming, successively; vice president, general manger and director.
In 1930, Castle and Cooke,Ltd,, the Honolulu freight traffic agent for Matson, sent
for him and during the next decade and a half he climbed steadily up that company's
ladder, working almost entirely on the solving of waterfront problemis. By 1935 he
had been elected a director; in 1937, he was appointed president and director of Castle
and Cooke Terminals, and in 1944, he became the company's vice-president.
In 1948, he was named executive vice-president of Matson, and returned to San Fran
Cisco, becoming president on July 1, 1950, a position he held for twelve years until re
tirement.
