Brothers,
This Is the first of many newsletters which you will be receiving from time to
time this year. Their purpose is to give you a better picture of Alpha Iota as it
is today.
Pardon our boasting, but Alpha Iota of Phi Gamma Delta now stands as one of the
leaders in the Greek system at Iowa State. In the past year, we have made substantial
improvement in almost every area upon which the worth of an imdergraduate chapter is
judged.
Scholastically, the house ranked l6th out of 32 fraternities for the 1960-61
school year. The pledges were 3rd, yth and ^i-th for Fall, Winter and Spring quarter,
respectively. While this represents a definite improvement, we are working for an
even more impressive record this year.
Push this year was the best ever. At the end of formal rush, we had 33 pledges,
the largest and best class on campus. They are a fine group of young men, and we are
expecting great things from them in years to come.
In activities. Bob MacDonough was recently selected to be co-chairman of Veishea
—probably the most important single position in activities that an Iowa State student
can hold, and Tcsn Foster was made Veishea publications chairman, also a Veishea Central
Committee position. In other activities, Dick Fickey and Nelson Wheaton were recently
initiated into the Knights of St. Patrick, engineering honorary; Jack Gellerstedt and
Dan Paul are co-chairmen of the IFC standing committee on scholarship; and Jack
Gellerstedt and Bob Green were active in Homecoming events.
In athletics, we have three men on the varsity football team, and two on this
year's undefeated freshman squad. We also have one varsity and one freshman cross
country man.
Our social chairman. Ken K\ihles has once again come up with a fine program. We
started the year with a party at Gordie Smith's house in Des Moines after the Drake
game. Following this we had a hayride, a clash party, numerous informal firesides, and
our big fall party, a semi-formal dance at the Nevada country club. The FIJI'S were
also the only fraternity at Iowa State to charter a full bus for the brothers and their
dates to Kansas University for the annualr-migration game.
These are but a few of the things we are pro\ad of. Another is our fine graduate
members. We are enclosing a return addressed card with the hopes that you will take a
few minutes to let us know what you're doing these days. Please use it, we'd sure like
to hear frcan you. Also, start making plans now to attend the best Pig Dinner ever--
the date is April T^h, I962.
