Over the
years. Gamma Deuteron of Phi Gam

f.Jrilled.
Excepting only the scholastic
terms 1956-57 since 1950, Gamma
Deuteron has led the Knox fraterni

The chances for continued success

cause Bruce was pledged late in the

was compiled without his high aver

A large number of the Fiji upperclassmen have distinguished them

President's Welcome
I would like to welcome you to what will be one of the most
enjoyable aspects of your college life here at Knox — Rush Week.
Gamma Deuteron Chapter of the Fraternit\' of Phi Gamma
Delta has jmblished the G. D. Fiji to introduce you, the class
of 1962, to our fraternity and for what we stand.
As you may or may not know, the Fraternitv of Phi Gamma
Delta is an international "old line fraternity.'' Founded on May
1, 1848, it is the thirteenth oldest Greek-letter society in America
and has more than 45,000 living members. Recently in a national
])oll of "old line fraternities," Phi Gamma Delta ranked eightli
scholastically.
.Some Fijis who have attained national jiromincnce in one
field or another are Calvin Coolidge, Norman Vincent Peale,
Christy Mathewson, Rob Matbias, and comedian Johnny Carson.
Among the 930 Phi Gams produced by Gamma Deuteron Chajiter
here at Knox, we find Otto Harhach, well known librettist who
wrote the lyrics to Dessert Song and many others, and Frnest
Elmo Calkin.s, the dean of .American advertising.
The Clieney Cu]) is awarded annually to the Phi Gam chapter
which is rated first on a three-fold basis of scholarship, iiarticipation in campus affairs, and relationshi]) with the general frater
nity. Among the eighty-five chapters. Gamma Deuteron placed
Murphy, Richards and Row are
second in this competition in 195,1 and seventh and fourth in the
Baker scholars, and Row and Jack
son have National Merit scholarships.
The National Fraternity of Phi
last two years with our eye on first place for this year.
This is a brief introduction to our fraternity and Gamma
Deuteron's rank in it — needless to .s;iy, we are j)roud of it.
Gamma
Delta
is
one
of
the
first
eight old guard fraternities in schol
arship.
One of the chief reasons
for this high-ranking position is the
willingness of chapters such as Gam
ma Deuteron of Knox to place
scholastics first in the activities of
its members.
Cordially yours,
RON AT.D E. DUDAS
President, Gamma Deuteron Chajiter

FIJI
FIJI CAMPUS LEADERSHIP
Phi Gamma Delta has long been
noted for its contributions to cam
pus activities. Naturally this leads
to positions of leadership in these
activities. This is a banner year for
the Fi.ii castle in this respect.
The Student Senate is one of the
most important organizations on the
campus. This year Fiji's Tom Neumiller and Kent Richards are presi-
dent and treasurer, respectively, of
the Student Senate.
The K-Club really needs no intro
duction. It is composed of the letter
winners in the varsity sports. Junior
Brown, president and Gary Hoopes,
vice-president are Fiji leaders in the
K-Club.
The Honor Board is the campus
organization responsible for main
taining and improving the honor sys
tem in use at Knox. Fiji's Tom
Murphy, Chairman, and Harry Row
are members of this board.

Knox elects officers only for its
more men in K-Club than any other
fraternity and presently holding I-M
cham.pionships in five sports, the Phi
Gams are looking forward to an
other successful year.
Fiji's form the backbone of vir
tually every varsity team at Knox.
The football team is bolstered by
starters Kent Richards, Jack Gorby,
Gordy Stagg, and Junior Brown. Jim

another
letterman.
Junior was given All-State Honor
able Mention last year.
In winter sports. Phi Gams are
again prominent. Gary Hoopes and
Bill Graning are returning starters
cn the basketball team, and Junior
Brown is a reserve letterman. Sopho
more J. B. White is another varsity
basketball man. Gar.v holds the col
lege sophomore scoring record and
has been given Midwest Conference
Honorable Mention for two years.

in the classroom. Fiji's Bill Reiners,

Turning to spring sports, Fiji Jun

team in batting, home runs, and
RBI's.
Other
lettermen
are
Eddie

and Ted Galovich, who led the team
