Dear Graduate Brothers:
The tragic and unnecessary death of President John F. Kennedy numbed this campus.
Activities at the House were brought to a sudden halt as the stunned Brotherhood grieved
the loss as they might grieve the passing away of a close relative. It was going to be
a gay weekend with many going to Pitt for the "big game". But the "big game" lost all
significance; plans were scrapped and carloads began leaving, not for Pittsburgh, but
for Washington where many Fijis joined that long line of diverse people united in their
respect for a great man. In this week of Thanksgiving, as we mourn his passing, we
give thanks that the stability of our nation transcends the efforts of a crazed
.assassin.
This first issue of the "Nittany Fiji" for the year '63-'64 contains a form which
we hope you will complete and send back to us. Of course, any additional news of our
graduate brothers will also be highly appreciated.
HCMECOMING
Gamma Phi president Andy Androski termed the recent homecoming weekend a great
success and, as we actives will attest, a lot of fun. Enjoying the Nittany victory
over Rice and the subsequent festivities were (in order of guest book signatures):
Bill Morris ('49), H. Ross Fishburn ('57), Dave Fishburn ('54), Blair Husted ('49),
Ken Houck ('46), Don Ferguson ('57), John Lessig ('57), Barry
Merkel ('55), John Wray ('39), Terry Mutton ('58) Tom Schott
('43), L. William Pyle ('53), Earl Henderson, Jr. ('59), Jack
Purnell ('53), Dick Robb ('54), Ike Thompson, Jr. ('42), Bill
Hough ('58), Pete
('54), E. D. McKean,
Jr.
Krumrine ('59), Dick
Forrey ('53), Per
Torgersen ('58), Roy Bertolet ('44).
CORPORATION MEETING
The election of new officers was the highlight of the last Gamma Phi Corporation
meeting held on October 6. Beginning their one year terms are: President; Blair
Husted ('49), Vice President; Ken Houck ('46), Secretary-Treasurer; Jack Krumrine ('59).
Other business to come before the meeting included the Fund Drive currently in
progress. Donations received so far total $4,500 with a response of only eight per
cent. Members of the Fund Drive Committee hope that alums will donate $10 for each
year that has passed since their graduation. More importantly, it is hoped that every
alum will respond to the needs of the chapter and give what they can.
The money is used for reducing the mortgage and for needed improvements in 'this
old house'. The brothers are grateful, indeed, for the new rugs and drapes on the
first floor.
They are grateful also for the retiling of the second floor shower.
But the bright new shower heads still emit a very uncomfortable 'polar spray' at
times making the brothers very mindful of the fact tha.t what is needed most of all is
a new hot water system--for both warmer showers and a warmer house.
