UPSILON ALPHA of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity, University ot Arizona, May, 1971, Tucson, Arizona
Jim Boice Selected To Phi Beta Kappa
Cabinet Visits
National
Although all Fijis are familiar with the address
1757 N. Street N. W., Washington, D. C., few
are ever fortunate enough to visit there. How
ever, during Easter vacation, Jim Boice and John
Stallings were sent by the Fiji Building Corpora
tion to visit the National Headquarters in Wash
ington.
Jim and John spent two days in the Washing
ton area — the first was utilized for sight seeing,
and the second consisted of a visit with Executive
Secretary, Bill Zerman.
After touring the impressive headquarters
building John and Jim discussed fraternity affairs
with Mr. Zerman, and got a first hand look at
how the national actually operates. The remain
der of the day was spent in a friendly chat with
the three discussing topics ranging from fraterni
ty life to little league baseball.
Both Jim and John agreed that getting to know
the fraternity administration was a valuable
asset and therefore, it was recommended to
chapter that the new officers be sent to Wash
ington early in the fall to derive the maximum
benefits from the experience.
New Officers
Upsilon Alpha has selected new officers for the
1971-1972 school year. Replacing the graduating
president and outstanding senior, Jim Boice, is
Jeff Derickson. Jeff has served as president of the
sophomore mens honorary, Sophos; is a mem
ber of Chain Gang, the junior men's honorary,
and is a member of the Traditions committee.
He also was rush chairman first semester of this
year. Replacing John Stallings as treasurer is
Tom Harvey. Tom was a member of Sophos and
is a member of Chain Gang. Being an accounting
major he is well qualified to take care of the
house's funds. Our new recording secretary is
Steve Pierce. Steve is the president of Traditions
at the university and served as chairman of the
Student Union Activities Board Entertainment
Committee last year. Rod Drake is the new cor
responding secretary, and is the only sophomore
to be elected to the cabinet. Art Scarla is taking
over the office of historian. He served as chair
man in arranging our last Pig Dinner. These men
exhibit hard work on campus as well as for the
fraternity.
Men's Night
Successful Pig
Dinner
On March 21, 1971, Upsilon Alpha celebrated
it's fifteenth anniversary of the founding of Zeta
Delta Epsilon with the Norris Pig Dinner, The
occasion was held at the beautiful Westward
Look Resort, which is located in the foothills of
the Catalina Mountains overlooking Tucson. We
are proud to say that the dinner was a success.
We would like to thank the graduate chapter for
their help. The Silver Owl Award, which has no
correlation with the National Award, was given
to Andy Rupkey for his outstanding contribu
tions to the local chapter. We would also like to
thank Executive Secretary, William Zerman, for
his speech on the fraternity, past and present
and future. Again, thanks to the graduate bro
thers for the services you have rendered the
fraternity.
This year our chapter won many awards and
placed many brothers in university honoraries.
Ail-American baseball player Steve Mikulic
was named the Outstanding Senior Athlete for
the year. Four Fiji's were selected for Who's
Who in American Colleges; Jim Boice, Dan
Ferrary, Steve Mikulic, and J. Ray Rokey. Upsi
lon Alpha placed ten on Sophos, the sophomore
men's honorary, and they were: Craig Lincoln,
Danny Montgomery, Bill Morgan, Tim Pierson,
Dave Pollark, and pledges Chris Clausen, Jim
Schultz, and John Wild. Seven were selected for
the junior men's honorary. Chain Gang and they
included: Jim Glasser, Jeff Marin, Chuck Rehling. Rod Drake, Craig Ochoa, Derek Schull, and
Don Crowell. Ochoa is the new Secretary-Treas
urer, and Glasser the new Vice-President. Four
of the thirteen new Bobcats, senior men s honor
ary, were Fiji's, and they include: Steve Todd,
Steve Smith, Jeff Derickson, and Steve Pierce.
Picked for Traditions Committee were Jim Glas
ser, Jeff Martin, Don Crowell and Doug Vance.
All in all it was a good night for Upsilon Alpha.
Boice For Wilkinson

The Cecil J. Wilkinson Award is awarded
annually to the most outstanding undergraduate
member of the senior class of Phi Gamma Delta.
The selection is based upon scholarship, person
ality, fraternity service, and extracurricular
activities. The purpose of the award is to recog

ment has exemplified a high standard of moral
ity and an adherence to those values of human
endeavor found in our rituals.
Upsilon Alpha's nominee this year is James
Bryan Boice, truly an outstanding representative
of Phi Gamma Delta. Jim's qualifications speak
for themselves. The senior from Phoenix has a
1.4 grade average and a member of Alpha Epsil
on Delta, Phi Eta Sigma, Phi Kappa Phi, and Phi
Beta Kappa, scholastically, He was a member of
Sophos, Chain Gang, and Bobcats service honor
aries winning Chain Gang s "Most Outstanding
Junior in the University" award. He is very
active in student government on campus serving
on the Student Union Activities Board as Chair
man of the Entertainment and Special Events
Committees and as Vice-President this past year.
He served our chapter more than adequately
as Rush Chairman getting 46 Pledges and Presi
dent accepting the Cheney Cup for us this sum
mer. Jim recently recieved the distinguished
Robert L, Nugent award as the outstanding
Senior man for contributions to the University,
Academic Achievement, Citizenship, and Lead
ership. The Nugent Award is among the highest
honors the University of Arizona can award.
Jim is also listed in "Who's WhiQi in American
Colleges and Universities".
Six Fiji's On
BasebalFTeam
Starring for the University of Arizona baseball
team are third baseman, Steve Mikulic; catcher,
J. Ray Rokey; center fielder, Harry Lodge; first
baseman. Dale Bauman; catcher. Gene Aasen;
and pitcher, Mike Bingham. We are proud to
note that Mikulic and Rokey are All-Americans.
This year the Wildcats have a 22-12 record, and

coming up with ASU those losses will hopefully
