First House
This spring semester Sigma Mu moved into their first
chapter house. Located at 107 West Lampkin Street, the
red brick house sleeps eleven brothers. The house has five
bedrooms, three baths, living room, den, kitchen, lounge area,
and a big basement.
As soon as we moved in, the brothers had work days
'o clean and paint the house. Carpenters later built showers,
:xtra closets, and a chapter room in the basement. Last
semester's pledges donated money from their fund raising
project to get royal purple plush carpet for the room.
Other donations to the house were: a piano from Broth
er Gary Freeman's parents; a white owl from Section XIV
Chief, Dr. Tommy Williams; owl end irons for our fire
place from the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority; and paint from our

Everyone is encouraged to come see our beautiful "pur
ple mansion" here in Starkville, Mississippi.

Grades
The brothers of Sigma Mu are proud to announce that
the fall pledge class of 1970 took top honors among the
fraternities here at MSU in grades. The pledges posted a
2.85 quality point average on a 4.00 system for the fall
semester. This is the third consecutive time that a FIJI
pledge class has been number one.

Community Service
This semester the Community Service Committee has
chosen a tutoring program for black students as the frater
nity's major project. The program will involve taking chil
dren to and from a central meeting area where the students
will be tutored by members of the fraternity. Along with
the fraternity, several girls will help in the tutoring. Mrs.
New Initiates
On January 29, 1971, Sigma Mu with the assistance of
Dr. Tommy Williams, Section 14 Chief, initiated their chap
ter pledges at the First Methodist Church in Starkville.
The ten were outstanding men. They had the highest fall
semester Q.P.A. of any fraternity on campus. Their pledge
project was the publication of a basketball program for the
Mississippi State S.E.C. home games.
Kathy Gentry has volunteered to help administer the pro
gram and has supplied materials for each session.
The ten were: Samuel Martin Allison, Sarah, MS.;
Edwin Lee Bean, Liberty, MS.; Ronald Edward Campbell,
Meridian, MS.; Lawrence James DeMuth, Sperry, Okla.;
Plans have moved smoothly and a time for the program
has been set, being every Tuesday night from six to seven-

has been established as a meeting place.
