HENDERSON IN VIET NAM
By Douglas L. Bash
After half a year at Basic and
Artillery Schools at Marine Corps
School, Quantico, Virginia, Second
Lieutenant Wayne Henderson (I.M.
'63) received orders for duty at Ma
rine Corps Air Station, Kaneohe Bay,
Hawaii.

duty station; and after the time spent
in schooling, both at Purdue and
Quantico, Wayne was ready for some
practical application of his know
ledge. He soon got all the practical
application he could handle — at
Phu Bai, Viet Nam.
Initially, Henderson was on
duty
as Forward Observer with his artil
lery unit; Battery "I", 3rd Battalion,
12th Marines, supporting BLT 3-4
of the III Marine Expeditionary
Force. It was with this unit that he
called in his first fire support mis
sion. Usually the F.O. calls in rounds
from an observation point in the
forward
battle area. However, it is
often necessary to observe from the
air, and in this capacity, Wayne has
flown
enough
combat
missions
to
earn an Air Medal.

Guest speaker is Herbert A. Erf, Sr.
(Whittenberg '24), who is at the pres
ent time Archon Treasurer.
Brother Erf is an outstanding busi
nessman as well as an interested and
dedicated brother. He is an expert
in the field of sound, having been
the first graduate of Case Institute
of Technology to enter the area of
acoustical engineering. He is pres
ently regarded as the world's fore
most expert in acoustical design. Ac
tive in his college alumni affairs, he
has served as president of the Case
Alumni Association, trustee of the
university, and is a life member of
the alumni council. Before being elec
ted to his present position as Archon
Treasurer, Brother Erf was for many
years the chairman of the Ekklesiai

Committee
Wayne; "I've been in the hospital
for the past two weeks. Seems I've

the rice paddies and swamps and
jungle every other night on ambush

the hundreds, I guess it was bound
to catch up with me eventually.
Makes me mad, though; here I've
been dodging bullets, grenades, mor
tars, and booby traps for over five
months now and a lousy . . . mos
quito shoots me down."

Wayne was kept in Viet Nam to
take over as XO of the replacing
Battery. In this same month he got
his promotion to First Lieutenant
and as XO of the Battery, he still
uses his knowledge of fire support.
As Fire Support Coordinator for the
Commanding Officer of the 4th Bat

directed airstrikes from a Huey jet
helicopter as well as from the gound.
It is in this capacity t.iat Wayne now
serves in Viet Nam. He expects to
be there until about 2 April 1966,
and at that time he will be at Pearl
Harbor.
