up for lost. \S'e are still in existence (although you wouldn't loiow it from
the number of Alpha Phiji Newspapers you received last year) and have many
things which we feel you should know about our activities of last year and
our plans for the coming one. In short, we wish to apologize for our had
showing in the area of graduate relations and hope that you will give us
one more chance to let you know that we appreciate your interest in the
chapter. Many graduates have contacted us during the past year with rush
recommendations, suggestions for chapter operations, and otl?er helpful
items which we would like to acknowledge at this time. The second purpose
for this newsletter is to announce the fact thai the PIG DINNI rt h'ILL BE
HELD IN THE FALL THIS YJvVR.
There are several reasons for this.
First of
ull, with the new trimester system, our spring is just so packed with
activities that we just can't work them all .in. IV'e got out of classes the
first week in Hay last year and thi.s year plans are for us to finish up late
in April. You can see that with Hom's Weekend, Spring Weekend, Pledge
Formal and of coui'se Grass Skirt, that there just are not enough weekends
to fit everything in. We hope that this isn't too trying on you. We have
consulted many graduates on this question and they all said that with enough
notice, attendance should not he hurt at all. For this reason I am notifying
you at this time (l will box it in below to catch the eye of those brothers
who have not Tm.ded through the letter this far).
PIG DINIL R WILL BE IN THE FALL THIS YEAR
THE DATE WILL BE NOVEMBER 14, 1964

I hope that you will find the rest e.f this newsletter interesting and
informative. I have found it somewhat difficult to prepare since I am
writing it in San Francisco where I am working for the summer. I hope that
I have included items of graduate interest. And, I hope that getting this
letter off to you during our "Tirst week of classes will show you that we
truly hope to make the phrase "Not for college days alone" more meaningful
to the Alpha Phi Graduates. See you at Pig Dinner,
Fraternally,

SCHOLARSHIP
Phi Ganmia Delta ranked fifth on campus with a 2«7S averages
The all mens
average -was 2s56 and the general fraternities average ■was 2.51s Only four
smaller houses ranked above us. Our pledges ranked 8th ■with a 2.61 average.
In the spring our house received many scholastic honors. We had four Phi
Beta Kappas (see the June, 1964 issue of THE PHI GAMMA DELTA).
We also had two
Tau Beta Pis and several other scholastic honors. Once again, Phi Gamma Delta
showed up very strongly in academics. We were, quite probably, one of the strong
est academic houses on campus and undoubtedly the strongest of the big houses.
Our spring pledge class of 20 men had a combined average of 3.1.
ATHLETICS
The chapter had 5 men in varsity competition this year. They include 1
wrestler, one track man, and 3 swimmers. In intramural competition we finished
somewhere around 8th. We won championships in Cross Country, Swimming, and V/ater
Polo. We also fielded a fine FRISBEE squad, which logged about 300 hours of front
la'wn practice during final exams but could find no other campus frisbee team
to challenge.
SIRRING RUSH
The chapter had an excellent spring rush pledging 20 men.

\r\nWORK ON THE HOUSE AND ANMEX
In the susnner of 1963 under the able eyes of Francie Gutman(Purdue '56) and
Bob WeuTer(Michigan ?) over $5^000 iras put into the annex. The rooms vere
remodeled and repainted, iritb closets built in to replace the old tin ones -we knew
so well. The battered and beaten ebests of drawers were replaced with built in units
and one of the rooms was paneled. The work made living conditions in the annex much
more enjoyable and has helped our rush considerably. Of course, we still await the
new addition but money just simply had to be spent in order to allow us to reopen
the annex in the fall.
The past summer has found $3,000 put into the remodeling of the first floor
of the house.
New lighting, drapes, .nd rugs have been added.
New
Alpha Phi Board President, Bob Carr and Building Committee Chairman Tom Cole
(Mich. '62) have handled all the planning. Money has also been voted for a large
amount of remodeling to be done in the summer of 1965. All of the plans are
designed to remodel portions of the house which will still be standing after the
new addition is completed.
NEW ALPBA PHI'BOARD
The new Alpha Phi Board officers arej
President, Robert Carr, 3130 Dolph Drive, Ann Arbor, Michigan
Secretary, Jerry Hamm
Treasurer, G. Tom Cole
The Alpha Phi Board is presently working with the undergraduate officers to plan
remodeling of the chapter house. It is felt by all that this work is essential
and must be done if 707 is to remain in reasonable repair. There are many areas
where preTentative maintenance has been all but forgotten and several of the rooms
are badly in need of rugs and remodeled closets.
These are the items of
immedia^te interest to the new board.
PIG PINNER
Pig Dinner was held on Saturday, March 7, 1964, at Washtenaw Country Club®
One hundred and seven brothers attended the dinner and saw a drastic change from
previous Pig Dinners. The highlight of the event was a speech titled "60 Years
of Housing at Alpha Phi Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta" delivered by Donald S. Smith
(Michigan *29). The talk included personal glimpses into the past and a hopeful
look toward the future. The rest of the evening was devoted to presentation of
awards, report of the undergraduate chapter, entertainment by Wildcat, and singing
by brothers young and old. Brother V/alter B. (Bud) Rea was awarded the dubious
honor of kissing the Pig's snout although he maintained to the end that he "just
couldn't be the oldest Fiji there." We hope that this year's dinner will be even
a bigger success but only the attendance of many brothers can make this possible.
For brothers living a great distance away, why not contact some of the other Fiji's
in your area and drive down together? Make a weekend of it and really enjoy your
selves. Don't forget, the date is November 14. Start contacting your old (excuse
that term) pledge brothers and roommates now. How long has it been since you last
saw them?
CAMPUS ACTIVITIES
Once again. Phi Ganmia Delta dominated the campus activities scene.
We
captured the vice presidency of the Union, five of the eight Union committee
chairmenships, the position of Student Government Council Treasurer and two
Homecoming Committee Chairmenships. We had one man tapped for Michigamua, one
for Sphinx, two for Triangles, and one for Scabbard and Blade. Previous to the
spring changeover of activities officers, we had men active in the Union, Student
Government Council, Interfraternity Council, Young Democrats, Engineering Honors
Council and many other areas.
\r\nNE?/ CABINET
The new undergraduate officers are:
James K. Posther, President
Birmingham, Michigan
Robert V.'. Pike, Treasurer
Bloomfield Hills, Michigan
James R, Painter, Recording Secretary
Jamesville, New York
Charles E. Thomas, Corresponding Secretary Lemoyne, I'ennsylvania
Lee H. Jerreris, Historian
Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan
Please feel free to conto,ct any of these men on problems or suggestions concerning
the fraternity.
RUSH FOR THE COMING YEAR
Don't forget, our rush will be very early this year. Fall rush is September
13-23 and Spring Rush will probably begin January 17. We welcome all recommendations
and advanced notice of prospective pledges. Please address all rush reconnnendations
to Kelley Rea, 707 Oxford, Ann Arbor, Michigan.
