Lambda Revives Social Service Proiects
By TERR Y ETTER
This year at Lambda the Community Service Committee has attempted
to correct a long standing area of neglect. Though community service projects had been done in the past, they
had been few and far b etween, and
enthusiasm was certainly not overwhelming. As a result of this new
emphasis, some very gratifying changes
have taken place in the form of chapter
response when called upon to meet
various community challenges. It has
been a real fallacy in the past to assume that living units on the DePauw
campus are existing as a separated
entity to the rest of the community.
This is not only a fallacy which has
been true of Lambda, but of all the
other houses on campus, and is, in our
Bros. Grooms and Boswell pose at Putopinion, a very sad opinion to hold.
nam County Hospital after blood donation.
In our attempt to overcome this feeling, we have outlined an active program of community participation and at this
point have completed most of our goals.
At the outset of the school year the committee met and outlined eight specific goals to be achieved by the end of the year. These projects were arranged
in such a sequence that they would become larger, and, eventually our ultimate
goal for the year would be achieved. (This will be discussed later). In Septemb er auu Od.obei· we had three main projects lined up. Through the cooperation
of the County Hospital, all of our eligible men had their blood typed, and volunteered their services for blood donations in the event that their specific blood
type was needed. Throughout the year, this service has been required. The
men have willingly gone to the hospital at all hours of the day. The other two
projects were primarily educational services. Through the cooperation of the
Putnam County School system our men have volunteered their services as tutors
primarily to high school students who are having academic difficulties. On the
local educational level, Lambda had four men working with mentally retarded
children, helping them to learn fundamental educational skills.
In November Lambda's main project was concerned on the state level. One
of Lambda's members got the idea to organize a campus wide talent show and
present it at the state penitentary. Though this had never been done, the superintendent of the institution was· extremely receptive to the idea, and the show
was a gratifying success as evident in reports found in the Indianapolis Star,
Chicago Tribune, St. Louis Post Dispatch, and a personal letter from the state
farm superintendent.
In December Lambda's song group put on separate Christmas programs a1
the County Hospital and Greencastle Old Folks Home. After the confusion of
finals and after the dust settled, we were once again ready with several projects.
The Freshmen, as part of their Help Week activities, spent one afternoon at the
