CHAPTER NEWS
With things here at the chapter house getting into full swing, the Chi
Tama has passed into new hands. Faced with the responsibility cf keeping the
quality of the chapter paper on the same level as it has been in recent years,
the new committee is working hard to see that the best job possible is being
done.
Your new editor is Kenneth Payment^ a sophmore liberal arts and pre-law
student. Also serving on the committee are Brothers Paul Blanchard, a sophomore
chemistry major, and William "Flash" Martin, a sopomore mechanical engineer.
The
committee hopes that we will have your continued support in making the CHI TAMA
the Coon Plaque winner once again.
HELP WANTED
Union's Alumni Inter-Fraternity Committee has recently set down a new set
of social rules for fraternities. Briefly these rules include; 1) A set of
maximum hours and specific days during which social functions might take place;
2) Specific provisions for chaperones at parties; 3) Set times during which
female guests are allowed in houses during the week, and 4) A maximum number
of overnight parties which any fraternity might have.
We feel the rules have certain merit and are acceptable in many instances,
but at the same time we recognize that certain parts of the rules are aimed at
either the complete abolishment of fraternities from old Union's campus, or the
complete control over all of their activities.
We are further convinced of
this when we see the building of "fraternity quadrangles", dorm-like clusters
of fraternities constructed side by side with common fire escapes and financed
principly by the college.
Some of our alumni have already felt the effects of the rules when on
Homecoming Weekend they were obliged to leave at 1 A.M. because their wives
and female guests were not allowed in the chapter house after that hour. Also
according to the rules, as they have been stated, neither.actives nor alumni
will be allowed to have female guests or wives in the house during weekdays
except during the hours of 5 P.M. through 8 P.M.
We have mentioned these two rather undesirable aspects of the rules; there
are others. Perhaps our main concern is not with the rules themselves, but
the av/esome aspect of the consequences. We at Phi Gamma Delta feel that the
fraternity experience isarich enough one that it should always be a part of
Union College, the "Mother of Fraternities".
We also believe that part of that
experience is in governing our own activities with a minimum of guidance on

the part of the college.
Now is the time to act I

FALL WEEKEND
The problem is
1?60
Fall Weekend at the Fiji House was the best ever this year. Many of the
brothers attended the Prom at the Hotel Van Curler on Friday evening and on
Saturday were out in full force to see Union tie St, Lawrence in a 12-12
thriller.
The concert at Memorial Chapel featured the '^Brothers Four*;* a new group
of singing stars who made their start as Fijis from the University of
Washington, Their show was considered the best in some years and we were*
honored by the Brother*s presence at the chapter bouse after the concert.
This was the highlight of the weekend as the **Brothers Four*' showed themselves
to be loyal Fijis and true brothers.
Incidentally, Chi Chapter has closely adhered to the college social rules
this year and this policy was followed during the whole of Fall Weekend,
NOTICE
For those of you who are interested, Columbia Records has recently issued
