Gamma Deuteron Initiates
'Improved' Pledge Program
The Gamma Deuteron Chapter
of Phi Gamma Delta has spent
many hours this year on the plan
ning of the 1970 pledge program
in order to rectify many of the
problems that have occurred in past
programs. We hope to achieve
our results by placing a new stress
on the pledge education program
and the use of the Purple Pilgrim.
With the cooperation of the board
of Chapter Advisors we feel we
have planned a program which will
give the pledges more than ade
quate background for activation in
to Phi Gamma Delta.
Four nights a week, the pledges
are required to come to the house
as a group and do their special du
ties of house clean-up. Saturday
work parties are also a part of their
work.
One night a week the
pledges have a meeting in which
they are instructed and tested on
Clarification
There may have been some con
fusion arising concerning the status
of Bill Holway due to the recent

him in
the
the history of this chapter and the
national fraternity.
Besides these times, the pledges
are, of course, welcome to come
over to the house whenever they
would like, to get to know the act
ives better, to get some "tutoring,"
or to grab a quick snack from the
kitchen.
This year, more than past years,
great stress is being placed on the
pledge father-pledge son relation
ships.
This includes regularly
scheduled Monday Night meetings
with each pledge's pledge father, a
tracing of each "Family's" family
tree and special activities such as
a Pledge Father-Pledge Son Ping
Pong Tournament.
The actives
feel that a good father-son relation
ship can strengthen the pledge's
ties to the house and bring him in
to closer relationships with the bro
thers when the time comes for his
initiation.

Athletics Take Winter Spotlight
Leech, Denoma, Burke Lead Siwash
Athletics constitute a major acticity during the winter for Gamma
Deuteron with actives participating
in intercollegiate basketball and
swimming as well as being active
in all phases of IntraMurals.
Currently on the starting five for
the Knox Varsity are Jim "Stubber"
Leech, a 6' 7" forward from Zion,
Illinois, and Terry "Chopper" De
noma, a 6' 3" junior forward from
Rock Island, Illinois. They both
have played major roles in the Siwashers' current 7-7 season.
Cur

and 7.2 rebounds a game. Jim has
been the most consistent scorer for
the Siwashers this year, having

At the beginning of this year our
IntraMural Manager, Max Utsler,
set as our goal for the year nothing
short of the winning of the Intra
Mural All Sports trophy. With no
more than twelve men eligible at
any one time to participate in IMs,
the Fijis were off to what should
have been a great disadvantage.
However, the Fijis started the year
off right by winning the IntraMu
ral Volley Ball tournament for the
fourth year in a row. Members of
that championship team were Jim
Leech, Bud Ullman, Cliff Senkpiel,
Bill Scanlon, Bert Collins, Mike
Burke and Kim Crawford.
After
putting forth a respectable, if not
spectacular performance in Ping
Pong, and a less than respectable
performance in the Cross Country
run, the Fijis found themselves in
second place (out of ten teams) in
the All Sports race; just a few
points behind the TKEs.
