KAPPA DEUTERON CHAPTER OF PHI GAMMA DELTA
Vol. 6, No. 1

Sigma
Pledge Class
In the middle of the summer, started
the summer rush program to build a
great pledge class. Thanks to the dedi
cated brothers it was a tremendous suc
cess. Fall
quarter Kappa
Deuteron
pledged nineteen men to make up the
Sigma Pledge class. Their roll consists
of: Bill Bass from Atlanta, John Blair
from Roswell, Tom Blackwell from
Atlanta, Tommy Catone from Atlanta,
Dave Davis from Atlanta, Henry Day
from Atlanta, Mike Haggarty from
Albany, Rick Hutto from Savannah,
Bobby Melo from Tucker, Mike Mitcham from Atlanta, Ray McKenzie from
LaGrange, Joel Purcell from Calhoun,
King Purnell from Atlanta, Phil Red-
dick from Tucker, David Thompson
from Atlanta, Steve Tmay from New
York, Neal Seiter from Clearwater,
Florida, Charles Vencill from LaGrange
and Pete Watson from Jesup,
During the quarter the Sigma Pledge
class had numerous socials with sorori
ties including a breakfast social for the
entire fraternity. A retreat for the big
brothers and the pledges is scheduled
for January 12 at Lake Lanier. They
are also seHing light bulbs which will
raise over $350 for their project. Their
sweetheart is Susie Reeves, a pledge of
our sist^ sorority. Kappa Alpha Theta.
Kappa Deuteron is extremely proud of
these nineteen men and can only hope
th'^ they live up to their high potential.
The members of the Rho pledge class
from spring quarter were initiated on
October 19th. They are Bobby Evans
from Jesup, Billy McCalley from Atlanta, and Steve Schuette from East
Point. Their pledge class present to the
fraternity, a Ping-pong table, has been
in constant use since the middle of
fall quarter.
Plans For New House
In rush, in parties, and alumni func
tions an attractive feature of a college
fraternities is it's housing. "The house"
is the focal point of the college frater
nity's activity. Interaction afforded by
living with men of high caliber casts an
enduring impression on the member's
character. Memories from the chapter
experience linger long after graduation.
The Phi Gams at the University of Geor
gia now confront the problem of future
housing. The chapter's short history has
witnessed accomplishments in scholar
ship, athletics, and the quality of men
enlisted. After achieving the highest
scholastic average a fraternity has ever
known at the University of Georgia, the
chapter members are in accord that the
next area of improvement should be
acquiring a permanent home for Kappa
Deuteron.
As the chapter looked ahead it recog
nized changing trends in student life
which required a different style of living
from that which fraternity groups have
known in the past. With emphasis on
individuality and earlier responsibility,
todays young apartment style living
seems the best prospect for Kappa
Deuteron,
Consultation with
major apartment
developers and contractors in Atlanta
including graduate brother Frank Sheetz
have produced a viable layout which
members anticipate will be versatile in
meeting fraternity demands.
The proposed chapter house will accomodate thirty-two brothers in eight
apartment units, offering attractive hous
ing for brothers until graduation. A
multi-purpose social area with dining
and party facilities will complete the
complex's single structure. It will comcontimied on page 2

bine the best features of apartments and
fraternities by incorporating apartment
within the fraternity. Each apartment
will
be
a self-sufficient two
bedroom
unit which provides its occupants with
space and primary heretofore unparalled
in fraternities or dormotories—a definite
plus for rush.
The undergraduates, especially seniors,
like this idea of apartment living be
cause it goes along with the popular
trend toward apartments and the house
will represent a good financial risk
because it is a multi-purpose building.
Should the fraternity have money prob
lems, the house could easily be con
verted into an apartment building. What
ever the case, the proposed structure
seems a sound investment.
The brothers are grateful to the At

INTRAMURALS
Fiji again did well in the four Fall
Quarter sports, football, volleyball,
swimming, and ping-pong. Of a possible
450 points the Phi Gams managed to
score 405. While this is quite good it
fell short of the 420 points rolled up
by AEPi in a fine showing.
In football our old ncmesi.s—AEPi—
managed to do it to us again, 20-14,
playing poor football in the first half
we fell behind 13-0. A superb effort
managed to give the lead at 14-13 with
less than two minutes left in the game.
AEPi came up with a bomb, however,
and an excellent 7 win, no loss season
ended on a sour note.
In swimming the Gams swept to a
first place showing led by Rob Geer
and graduate Bill Condon. Taking five
firsts and two seconds, Fiji swept to
victory quite handily.
In ping-pong, captain James Altenbach led a young team to a third place
effort. By bad luck, the draw hurt us
as we
drew
the
hardest team
in
the
semifinals though we were far superior
to everyone else.
The defending champions in volley
ball, Fiji could not quite make it two
years in a row and had to settle for
second place. A great effort by AEPi
(again) stopped the Gams a few points
.short. The loss to AEPi was the only
loss of the season.
This effort of a first, two seconds,
and a third was very good. However,
Fiji stands a chance to retire the Intramurals Trophy this year. To do this we
must win the President's League three
years in a row. With two straight years
of success this year holds the key. No
fraternity has managed this feat in over
fifteen years. Only a great Winter and
Spring quarter effort will make this
possible as the other fraternities are
trying their best to keep the trophy from
going our way again.

The main program consisted of the
brothers and pledges being broken down
into discussion groups and being given
topics related to identifying what Kappa
Deuteron problems are and our goals
for this year will be. Following the
group discussion, a general discussion
was to pool the ideas generated in the
various groups.
Other highlights of this year's re
treat included the pledge class sing, the
great food, a lot of ping-pong and bridge,
and a super game of capture the flag.
Many of the brothers also took the
opportunity to drive through the moun
tains which were at their peak of fall
as they returned to Athens on Sunday.
