Seminar of The Seventies
PURPLE
GARTER
r
Not to break the tradition of the past
few years, there was no snow for the
skiers at Purple Garter on January 26th
and 27th. The lack of snow did not
seem to put a damper on the weekend,
for all appeared to enjoy themselves.
The site of this year's Garter was at
Riverside Motel in Gatlinburg, Ten
nessee.
On Saturday, many enjoyed ice skat
ing while others went shopping at the
various gift shops. As usual, the Garter
ceremony was a tight contest with many
great contenders, but after an exciting
Left to Right: Bill Bracewell, John Sheppard,
William Zerman, Dean Sims, Tommy Rogers.
The Kappa Deuteron chapter played
graduate brothers. The head of UGA
host to the second ever "Seminar of the
housing, Dwight Douglas, spoke on
"Housing in the Seventies," and the
brothers analyzed the topic of New
Housing. For lunch the Fiji's ate in the
Georgia Center. Archon Treasurer John
Sheppard (Pittsburgh '44) gave a short
speech congratulating the chapters and
colonies on their good work. "Who is
Coming to College" was presented by
Brother (and Dean of Students) Suthern Sims; later, the discussion groups
contemplated the question of Member
ship Selection. The afternoon sessions
were finished by Assistant Executive
Secretary Tim Kilduff and by Executive
Secretary Bill Zerman; both spoke on
Seventies" on the weekend of February
16-18. This meeting involved sections
XIV, XV, XVI, and XVII which are
comprised of the chapters from David

Memphis State, Alabama, Auburn.
L.S.U., Mississippi State, Emory, Geor
gia, Georgia Tech, Florida, Florida
State, South
Florida, and
the
Delta
Colonies at Clemson and Florence State.
The conference brought some 75 outof-town brothers to Athens.
On Friday night. Kappa Deuteron
President Tommy Rogers welcomed the
delegates; then Section Chief Bill Bracewell gave the keynote address, "Ralph
Nader Recalls the Fiji's." After adjourn
ment the participants returned to the
chapter house for a keg social.
The program on Saturday involved
both speeches given by local dignitaries
and discussion groups led by under-
"The Role of Leaders in the Seventies."
The weekend was topped off by the
Kappa Deuteron and the guest brothers
joining together to celebrate the annual
"French Whore Party." Needless to say
an educational and informative week
end finished with "a good time being
had by all."
run-off, Brother Bill McKenzie and his
date made a fine showing and won. The
winners again received a prize they
needed, a fifth of Fighting Cock Burbon. Later in the evening the Gams
were entertained by The Divots.

Intramurals
Winter Quarter saw the Gams fall
even further behind the AEPi's despite
an outstanding effort. Twenty five points
in arrears at the start of the quarter,
Kappa Deuteron fell twenty more points
behind. The gist of this forty five points
deficit is that the Fiji's must finish
ahead of AEPi in every Spring Quarter
sport. The Spring Quarter sports are
Softball, golf, track, cross country, and
horseshoes. We are the defending cham
pions in golf and Softball and should
do quite well again.
The major sport of Winter Quarter,
basketball, saw the Gams finish in a tie
for second. After an opening game loss
to the eventual champions. Kappa Alpha
Psi, Kappa Deuteron finished strong
without another loss. Particularly grati
fying was an 8 point victory over AEPi.
In bowling the Gams paced by Cap
tain Neil Seiter, raced to a Fourth place
finish behind pacesetter Tau Epsilon
Phi. This Fourth place finish repre
sented the pinnacle of bowling success
in Kappa Deuteron's short intramural
history.
A close race in weightlifting resulted
in a third place effort. Captained by
Ray Paris, the weightlifters were barely
nosed out by AEPi and Theta Chi. Out
standing efforts were made by Ray
Paris, Pledge Mike Turbyfill, and Jeff
Smith.
Defending champions in badminton,
the Gams were not able to duplicate
last year's victory and were defeated in
a nip-and-tuck battle with Theta Chi.
Brothers
Rogers, Lawrence, Reddick,
and Parker comprised the team which
came within a few points of another
championship.
Winter Quarter was a great deal more
productive than last year's Winter Quar
ter but still saw the Gams falling behind.
Crowd enthusiasm and team effort were
both at a very high level and if con
tinued should produce Kappa Deuteron's
third consecutive intramural champion
ship.
