Mom Holliday
As well as the addition of a new
group of pledges here at Lambda Chapter, we also have acquired a new housemother: Mrs. Vivian Holliday (affectionately known as "Hap"). A native of
Indiana, Mom Holliday was born and
raised in the farm country of Sheridan,
Indiana and lived most recentl y just
north of Indianapolis. This is Mom
Holliday's first experience as a
housemother, and her reason for
taking on such a demanding task is
that she wanted something to do after
retiring from nearly thirty years of
public service.
Mom Holliday's career experience
has been both extensive and varied,
ranging from executive secretary of a
state youth rehabilitation center in
Indianapolis to bookkeeper of the
Greencastle Airport (where, incidentally, she also earned her "wings"). Her
latest place of emp loyment was at
Champagne Central High School in
Champagne, IN, where she held the
positi on of Business Manager.
Mom Holliday mentioned that s he
has always liked to keep busy. This
becomes very evident after hearing her
list of activities and interests. Although
she regretfully admi ts that she doesn't
know how to play bridge (a.k.a . the
International Housemother's Pastime),
she confesses that she loves to play
Euchre. Mom Holliday has always
taken a liking to music, which is shown
in her strong affinity for jazz and by the
fact that she has played th e violin since
she was seven years o ld .
When asked about her first two
months as a hou semoth er, Mom Holliday said that at first she was a bit
apprehensive, especiall y about Rush,
but that she has begun to feel more at
ease now that she has met many of the
guys in the hou se as well as meeting
the other housemoth ers n campus.
We all feel that Mom 1-.ulliday is a
strong asset and that she has become a
vital part of our house. We hope that
her cheerful disposition and strong
character will be here at Lambda for
many yea rs to come.
New Pledge Class
In th e past few years, we feel
Lambda Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta
has taken among the best pledge classes of any fraternity on the DePauw
campus. This year is no exception. We
were looking for fifteen fine young
men to choose Phi Garn as their home
for th e next 4 years, and our quota was
met. We are very proud of these excellent pl edges because they represent
the goals and ideals that make Lambda
what it is today.
Rush chairmen Tom Bayer '84 and
Pete Corbett '85 should be commended for their outstanding job. Many
thanks go out to these men and all of
the brothers who worked so hard to
make rush an enjoyable and worthwhile experience.
During their short existence as Fijis,
the pledges have already become involved in campus activities, house
committees, intramurals, social functions, and of course, the pursuit of
scholarship. Pledge educator Jim Smith
'84 has worked hard to create an effective pledge program which will be both
constructive and beneficial for the
pledges. So far the pledge class has
been busy staging Pledge vs. Active
football and soccer games, walk-out,
pledge parties, and pledge work projects.
Their potential makes them all welcome additions to Lambda Chapter.
We would like to invite all of our graduate brothers to visit the Chapter and
meet our pled ges as well as the active
chapter. Remember Phi Gamma Delta
is not for College Days Alone!

News from the Chapter House
President's Corner
Success and improvement continue to characterize our chapter at
DePauw. Last semester ended in numerous achievements. A top finish in
the Little 500 bike race, a strong finish
in intramurals, and an exciting Fiji Isle
are a few examples of our desire for
improvement. The effort did not stop
with the end of school. This summer,
we held three rush parties and sent five
undergraduates to Fiji Academy. Our
fraternal enthusiasm was evident this
August when it came time for rush . The
result was fifteen excellent and diverse
pledges. The house also improved
structurally. Our basement has new
flooring, our foyer has new wallpaper,
and a significant number of minor projects have been completed. Although
we are proud of these things, we must
give a large part of the credit to the
much greater graduate support that we
have received in the recent past.
Steve Foster ('80) has done an incredible job of establishing a working
Board of Chapter Advisors. The members of the board have given this chapter a large amount of time and much
needed advice. Our thanks goes out to
them. In addition, we must give our
continual thanks to George Dirks ('29) ,
House Corporation President, for his
endless support. For those of you who
have not had the opportunity to spend
some time at Lambda, please feel welcome to stop in anytime and see what
we're doing . We hope to see all of our
graduate brothers back for Pig Dinner.
Dave Schmitz, our Executive Pig Dinner Coordinator, promises that it will
be a gala extravaganza.
Our desire to be visited by our
graduate brothers stems from the pride
that exists among the undergraduates
in this chapter. Unity and brotherhood
are the greatest strengths of Phi Gamma Delta. We believe that the friendship that exists here is almost incomparable. The meaning of fraternity is
exemplified in the day-to-day life at this
chapter. Unfortunately though, our
satisfaction with our chapter may
potentially result in us losing the
motivation to improve. That's why it
is important for graduates to contin(continued on page 7)
The Eternal House Improvements Task
Continues
Over the past four to five year
period, Lambda Chapter has been
ostensibly involved in a project to gradually rejuvinate the Chapter House
and the surrounding grounds. Some
examples include the construction of a
fenced-in and well landscaped back
yard and front porch area; remodeling
of the basement area to include a pool/
TV room and a quiet study room; the
installation of a sauna; the remodeling
and refurnishing of the foyer and living
room area .
All of these projects, as well as
others, have been accomplished because the brothers have become conscious of the necessity of a well kept
house as a fundamental basis for maintaining a strong chapter. Thus, it is the
intention of our chapter not to stagnate
in this rejuvination/ rebuilding project.
There are many important projects and
problems which we have acknowledged and are in the process of sys-
tematically carrying out or solving. For
instance, the upper two levels of the
house are in dire need of a major
paneling project. This could save us
both time and the astronomical costs
of painting two or three times a year.
This same area is also in need of allweather carpeting and possible ceiling
tile replace ment. The point of the present articl e is to show Lambda's conscious and d eliberate activity in this
important area. We appreciate any and
all help from graduate brothers in this
regard - i. e., we are always in need of
contractors and wholesalers who
would be willing to provide us with
assistance.
Suggestions and possible criticisms
of means of accomplishing our goals
are whole heartedly welcome, and
financial assistance is never shunned.
Fraternally,
