PRESIDENT'S REPORT
Dear Brothers,
We have started yet another glorious
year here at Pi Chapter. The newly elected cabinet, which I am proud to be a
part of, has been working hard along
with the rest of the brothers to make
this year a year of great improvements
for Pi Chapter. The members of the new
cabinet include, Treasurer Kevin McKown
'85 from Fayetteville, WV; Assistant
Treasurer Don Trace '86 from Saegertown, PA; Recording Secretary Vince
Criswell '86 from Pittsburgh, PA; Corresponding Secretary Ron Repasky '85 from
Boardman, OH and Historian Tom
Pierro '85 from North Versailles, PA.
We currently have - 54 brothers (28
living in the house) here at Pi Chapter,
with the exception of Bob Drake '85 who
is studying abroad this year. Also, because of the fine job done by our Rush
Chairmen, Vince Criswell and Mike
Fisher, we have 10 fine men that make
our 1984 pledge class.
As of now, our Annual Frank Norris
Pig Dinner will be held at the David Mead
Inn, Meadville, PA, on April 28. We encourage graduate brothers to attend.
I would also like to commend our
newly appointed House Managers; Tim
Gipe '86 and Michael Baumann '86. In
only a few weeks time, they have done
many things to improve the looks and
upkeep of our chapter house. House
improvements is one of our main goals
for this year, and we have many plans
for other improvements in the remaining
months of this year.
So far this has been a very good year
for Pi Chapter. Together, as a brotherhood, I know things will only get better!
Fraternally yours,
Jeff Melvin '85

TREASURER'S REPORT
Dear brothers:
I'm happy to say we are once again
financially sound. Many house improvements are underway thanks to our House
Corporation. New heavy duty outside
doors were installed by graduate brother
Jack "COOGS" Cougan.. Plans are also
in the making for him to remodel our
bathrooms.
Our house managers are
presently removing the living room
carpet and are going to refinish the
original wooden floor.
Our kitchen is superior. We've made
many improvements through a newly
formed kitchen committee.
Former
treasurer Dan Roll is the chairman.
They are in charge of menus and competitiv~ bidding from food distributors.
Two new openings were formed in our
kitchen crew, which are in charge of
clean-up after each meal.

HOUSE MANAGERS' REPORT
As the new house manager of Phi
Gamma Del ta I have set some goals for
our house. I am determined to keep the
house in the best condition possible
with the limited time that I have. This
term many improvements are in the
planning. For example, the living room
floor is going to be stripped of its carpet,
sanded and waxed with a durable wood
finish. We are planning to purchase new
curtains and tables for the dining and
living room. One of the major projects
this term will be the installation of a
drainage system into our bathrooms.
We have been having serious problems
with water building up on the bathroom
floor and leaking through the tiles into ยท
the room below.
Our plans for next term will include
the construction of a new bar with a
refrigeration system.
Our thanks must be extended to
graduate brother Jack Coogan who
installed four metal doors on the entrances to the house. These doors take
alot of abuse but we are sure these doors
will last.
My partner, Mike Baumann, and I plan
to keep the house in good working order
as long as we remain house managers.
As you all know, the house is becoming

more often. In concluding, I would like
to extend the invitation for any house
improvement suggestions that you may
have.

you would like advertised. Since the Pi
Crust is mailed to every graduate of Pi
Chapter and to all of the undergraduate
houses, think of all the free publicity one
can receive.
This allows brothers to deal directly
with brothers, promoting the ideals of
brothership cultivated in the Fraternity.
Also, I feel that most brothers would
prefer to deal with someone they can
trust, rather than an outsider with whom
little is shared.
To advertise in the Pi Crust, please
mail some type of advertisement or
business card to Pi Chapter, c/o Corresponding Secretary. I look forward to
your response.

FREE ADVERTISEMENT
In another attempt to improve graduate relations, the Pi Crust is now making
a unique offer. Space in the Pi Crust will
now be open for graduate brothers to
advertise their business or services. The
advertisement will be free, all that is
needed is for you to mail us whatever
Graduate response has improved greatly in recent times, but we still have a long
way to go. A number of questionnaires
have been returned from our last edition
of the Pi Crust, but we'd like to hear
from you all. In addition to the survey,
some graduate brothers also returned for
the annual Frank Norris Pig Dinner held
on May 14. While at Mona Lisa's, I had
the opportunity to talk with most everyone in attendance and jotted down a few
notes about each of them. The brothers
of Pi Chapter would like to thank those
brothers who attended the "Gig", responded to our survey and a special
thanks to those graduates who visit the
house when in the area.
In our next edition of the Pi Crust,
we plan to run a special article on the
past presidents of Pi Chapter. We would
appreciate it if EVERY past president
would complete and return the Graduate
News questionnaire including the years
you held office.
Let us know how
you're doing and what you're doing so
that all of the brothers will know. In
addition to the presidents, let's hear
from everyone. Let's not forget that Phi
Gamma Delta is not for college days
alone.

\r\nGATOR FOOTBALL
The 1983 Allegheny College football
season has been highlighted by fine play
by many brothers of Pi Chapter. The
season as a whole, however, has been a
big disappointment for the team. With a
fine 3-0 start, the team was looking for
a good year, and its first winning season
in 4 years. But this was not to be. At
the 3-0 mark, the Gators were pitted
against Carnegie-Mellon University, who
was also undefeated (4-0), and nationally
ranked. This was the turning point of
our season. The game was regionally
televised by ABC, which gave us added
incentive to win. Apparently, this was
not enough. The Gators went on to lose
35-0, and this devastating defeat would
affect the rest of our season. The team
struggled through the remaining five
games to post a 4-5 season record.
Needless to say, our final record does
not exemplify what a fine team that we
did have in 1983. Many key performers
on the field are also leaders off the field
in Pi Chapter. Heading our offense were_
quarterbacks Chris Broadman '85 and
Donald Trace '86. Both of whom made
the big plays when called upon. At
running back, Mark Zampell '85 provided
both power and speed to complement the
air attack. Blocking for him were centers
Ron Olson '86 and Scott Flinn '84. And
at the tackle positions were Kevin
Palermo 184 and Mike Baumann 186 who
both opened big holes when needed.
Thomas Pierro '84 also added strength
and quickness at the guard position. On
the catching end of most of Broadman
and Trace's passes were deer like wide
receiver Nathan Paskey '84 and slippery
Ron Lamendola '84 at the flanker spot.
Backup Kevin McKown '85 added depth
Mark
and versitility to these spots.
Bonessi 186 provided the blocking punch
at the tight end and wing back spot. The
offense as a whole performed well together but will sorely miss the abundance
of graduating seniors next year.
The defense made up for the lack of
offensive punch of the Gators. The defensive line, lead by All-American Bob
Fraser '85 made many big plays. Defensive ends Mike Zampogna '84 and Jay
Clayton '85 added strength, speed and
quickness to the terminals. Timothy
Gipe '86 and special team leader Gary
Session '84 added depth to the end and
linebacker spots respectively.
John
Platko '84, coming from linebacker in
1982, filled out the line at defensive
guard. Linebackers Steve Radel '85 and
Vincent Criswell '86 provided the support
Defensive
the line needed at times.
backs Mark Lamendola '86, John Null
'85, Mark Calderone '85, Mike Fisher 1 86 1
Angelo Valeri '86 and Dave Hood 185
did a fine job against the run and the
pass.
All in all, the team played well but
just didn't get the breaks that it needed.
With just a few returning lettermen,
next year should prove to be a real test
of our team's character. The brothers
of Pi Chapter will certainly continue
with
their winning attitude and
determination.

To you they're Gators, but to us they're our hogs.
\r\nHOMECOMING '83
For the first time in a long time,
Homecoming meant more to Pi Chapter
than most of its members playing in the
football game. This year, along with the
sister's of the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority we built a float for the Homecoming
parade.
This year's theme was "The
Greatest Show on Earth". Our float,
entitled "Blast the Bisons" fulfilled this
theme.
The float, designed by Scott Flinn,
had a moveable cannon with a bison head
protruding from the end, and a huge gator standing behind it, ready to fire. The
float was constructed in about four days
with many brothers joining in the effort.
Especially helpful were Scott Flinn,
Bruce Stubbs, Gordon Stover, Mike
Bauman, Mike Mutkus and Steve
Santamaria.
The Homecoming parade started in
Diamond Park and proceeded up to
Robertson Memorial Field. Fiji brothers
and Theta sisters dressed as clowns,
walked beside and rode on the float.
The Fiji clowns - Gordon Stover, Steve
Santamaria and Rob "Tin Man" Conway
passed candy out to kids lining the
streets.
Anticipation was high as the floats
were paraded around the track for the
fans and judges to view. As was expected, our awesome float won first
place and the $500 prize which went
along with it. The following victory
over Bethany put the icing on the cake
and Homecoming was an enjoyable
event for all.

Former chapter president, Jim "Ned"
Hess announced his fifth wedding engagement. Ned and Becky, let's hope this one
works out.
Presentation of the Distinguished Fiji Award to John W. Barkley '11, by Orrin
Eames, President, Cleveland Graduate Chapter.
Brother John Barkley (Allegheny
College, 1911) has been named Diamond
Owl recipient of the 1982-83 Distinquished Fiji Award.
The Archen policy establishing this
award states:
"The Distinquished Fiji Award will be
presented annually to no more than six
graduate brothers who shall be deserving
of recognition for their faithful and
unselfish service to Phi Gamma Del ta
or their special contribution to mankind and society at large."
Congratulations and best wishes for
continued success to brother Barkley
are certainly in order.
Kevin Baird '84
Dave Fisher, who has been blind
since birth, has finally regained his
eyesight. Dave commented that is was
better when he was blind since he
couldn't see the girls that he picked up.
Randy "Timer" Lamendola is showing
his togetherness with the brothers by
sharing his x-girlfriend.
Mike "Radar" O'Malley, former Treasurer, announced his engagement to his
dog Misty.
Phil Spina, our beloved Purple Legionnaire, would like to invite everyone
to his house for a Christmas dinner. The
menu consists of: freshly squeezed fruit
juices, garden fresh salad, perrie, dried
banana peels, raisin, fruit salad, sunflower seeds, rice and bee pollen.

DATE SET FOR PIG DINNER:
Although it seems early, plans for the Frank Norris Pig Dinner are underway.
The tentative date for the dinner is April 28, 1984. We will be sending out invitations after the first of the year, but in order to get a better idea- of how many graduates will be attending, we would appreciate it if you filled out the form below and
sent it to us. This is not binding, as you will receive a formal invitation in early 1984.
We are planning an excellent dinner and expect to have a well-known, prominent
guest speaker. Don't miss it!
Fraternally,
Kevin Baird '84
