HOMECOMING
Homecoming was an exciting weekend
here at Allegheny College. Both the
College and fraternity prepare many
activities to welcome alumni back to the
school. Due to the open invitation of
the College and fraternity , a large number
of alumni do return to visit Allegheny.
This year was no exception. Before the
football game, a reception was held at
the chapter house and quite a few
graduate brothers attended.
The Gators were having a disappointing season and were 0-4 going into the
Homecoming game against Case Western
Reserve University. As usual, the largest
crowd of the year watched the game.
The Ga tors broke their losing streak by
beating hapless Case 38-14. Senior Mike
Wild, President of Pi Chapter, recovered
a blocked punt in the end zone for the
only score of his four-year career. Brother
Randy Lamendola, quarterback, also
scored a touchdown, and Brother Terry
Churney was 5 for 6 in extra points and
also kicked a field goal.
After the game there was a party at
the house with a good , turnout of
graduate brothers. A good time was
had by all on Homecoming weekend
at Allegheny College, especially at Fiji
House .

DEAR BROTHERS,
The past year has been one of great
bounds for our Pi Chapter. We had our
sixth and final restriction lifted at the
end of the last school year and received
letters of commendation from all areas
of the College community. We have
become the trend setters on Allegheny,
with the Greek system adopting many
of our house rules. After consultation
with our house corporation, we have
banned the hard liquor bar and charging
at the door. We have returned to the
system of having social functions by
invitation only. The College has decided
to adopt the Fiji way, which has been
enforced in the house for two years now.
Many kitchens on campus have been
either closed or are heavily in debt.
Our kitchen, however, is doing extremely
well and we have been asked to show the
other fraternities how budget their
money.
We've also instituted -a 1.8 minimum
QPA to pledges and a 2.0 minimum QPA
to activate. The College just adopted
this also in order to help fraternity
students.
We have been making major efforts
to increase our academic standing. Last
year we raised our overall QPA to a
2.63, third on campus. We received an
award from nationals for our effort
having a QPA above the All-Men'~
average.
The future looks bright, as we initiated
29 new brothers, one of the largest in Pi
history. We made some improvements
to the House increasing the capacity.
We now have room in the house for 31
which will help us out financially.
'
I. would like to thank all the brothers
who have showed their support over
the year and have made my job easier.
I would also like to wish the best of luck
to the new cabinet members.
Jim Hess' 83 - President
Mike O'Malley '83 - Treasurer
Kevin Baird '82 - Rec. Sec.
Vince Donatelli '83 - Corr. Sec.
Steve Susnak '83 - Historian
It was the greatest honor of my life
to serve Phi Gamma Delta as President
and I'm very confident the new members
of the cabinet will do their utmost for
our chapter and fraternity. I will always
be proud to be a Fiji.
Fraternally,
Mike Wild
PARENT'S DAY
On October 17 the brothers of the
Pi Chapter here at Allegheny College
held Parents' Day. Many of the Parents
attended the last home game of the
season for the Gators in the afternoon.
After a fine showing by the Gators and a
29-0 rout over Washington and Jefferson
the brothers and their parents returned
to the Chapter House. The brothers
provided a hard bar for cocktails before
dinner. Each parent brought a tureen
such as stuffed shells, veal parmesan,
hot sausage or numerous salads and
desserts. The brothers provided a huge
baked ham as a main course. The dining
room was filled with the sound of
brothers introducing their parents to
other brothers and parents to other
parents. Everyone enjoyed the fine meal
and the closeness that was hanging in
the air. The house donned an impressively clean look which delighted the parents.
A good time was had by all.

\r\nPHI GAMMA DELTA IS NOT FOR COLLEGE DAYS ALONE
Anyone you recognize? Can you
point out yourself or are you to embarrassed because of the extra pounds
you put on since graduating? This is a

showing brothers of the late forties.

back to celebrate with their past brothers.
As a matter of fact, this picture was
received at last year's Pig Dinner. Brother
Tompkins suggested to place this picture
in the Pi Crust to stir up interest of
brothers, when he was an undergraduate,
to attend the Pig Dinner this year. Not
only does Brother Tompkins want to see
his old college mates that he has not seen
for a while-, but I am sure that there are
many other graduate brothers of all
ages who want to get together with

brothers at Pi Chapter would like to assist
all graduate brothers in reuniting with
graduate brothers of their time. If you

Football has always been an integral
part of the Pi Chapter and this year was
no different. The Gators were lead this
year by Garns, with 27 brothers on the
squad. The captains this year were Ken

and Brett Barcelona '82. Kenny lead the
defense from his tackle position. His

potent offensive at tight end. Brett had
many big catches and was an outstanding
blocker. On any Saturday, when "Cuz"
started a block, he didn't finish until
he was in Texas. The other seniors on
the team were Mike Wild and Mike
Wilson. Wild was a very consistent
player at defensive end. The "Bandit's"
highlight of the year was blocking a punt
\r\nand getting over on a dynamic score.
Mike Wilson, who played half the season
at offensive tackle with a broken hand,
used his quick feet to open huge holes
for the backs. The "Captain" looked just
like Jerry Kramer coming around on the
sweep and couldn't wait to pound someone on Saturday.
Other key members of the squad
included Randy "Bailey" Lamendola '83,
an All-American candidate at quarterback
who threw to his brother Ron '82. Ron
used his great strength to bowl people
over after he caught the ball. Jim Hess
'83 played defensive guard and is the
first one to use studio wrestling techniques on the his pass rush. Scott Lyon
'83, offensive guard, did a great job boxing the defender away from the ball. Also
at offensive guard was Steve Susnak '83,
who played with an incredible intensity.
Sus was known to call the opposing team
and tell them to get some sleep. At
center was Mark Sydowski '83, the
"Iron Mike" of the team, going the
entire year without missing a practice.
Because he has the desire of a hungry
wolf, Syd was always on the field an
hour before practice. John Platko '84,
played linebacker for the Gators. He
caused some massive destruction throughout the year and he came up with a ball
every Saturday. Richard McCall '84,
missed most of the season due to an
illness, but returned to the Gators to be
an inspiration to all. Kevin Palermo '84,
took up a good part of the offensive
line. Boom-Boom was probably the
quickest coming out of his shoot. Mike
Mutkus '84, played wide receiver, and has
a good pair of hands. He practices by
juggling balls in his spare time. Kevin
Baird '84, was the punter and last year
was 12th in the nation. Kevin being the
big punting guy he is, kept the Gators in
many games. Ed O'Connell '84, played
fullback and the back coach just loved
the big guy. Tom Pierro '84, was an
outstanding player at O guard and his
mental toughness was loved by the line
coach. Mike Zampogna '84 played
running back for the Gators. Chippy is
a hard runner and likes to deal out
abuse . Nate Paskey '84 is an outstanding
D back and the defensive line is always
happy having Nate behind them. Dan
Roll '84, was a defensive end converted
from center. No one really knew how
much red Dan saw in his eyes on Saturdays. Vince Donatelli '83 had an outstanding year at linebacker. Vince led
the team in tackles and could be counted
on to get everyone ready for the away
games. Gary Session '84, played tight end
and linebacker, but really enjoyed leading
the team's specialty teams .. G. Q.'s only
regret is that all the games were in the
day, for he really enjoys playing under
the stars, Scott Flinn '84 played center
until he received a knee injury. Scott
will return, though with a lot of hard
work over the year. Terry Churney '84,
was the place kicker for the team. Churn
helped .the defensive with his long,
booming kick-off. Dave Fisher '83, was
the back of the year last year and returned to have a good year. Fish use_d his
quick moves every Saturday to his best.
Mike Zidek '84, was a quarterback and he
used his quick thinking on the field
making some great audible's to help
the Gators. Spud learned many of his
outstanding QB skills at his alma mater
Kiski. Also helping the team was manager
Curt Cramer '84. Curt was especially
liked when he'd blow the siren signaling
the end of practice. The Phi Garns have
always aided Gator athletic teams and
are proud to show the Fiji pride on the
athletic fields.
Dear Graduate Brother,
We at Pi Chapter are trying to update our graduate files to improve the relationship between graduates and undergraduates.
Because, as we all know, Phi Gamma Delta is not for college days alone. We would appreciate it if you would fill out the following
information and return it to~us as soon as possible. Thank you very much.

\r\nHOUSE IMPROVEMENTS
The house improvements committee
here · at Allegheny Pi Chapter has been
very busy this term. We have completed
projects ranging from a new drop ceiling
on the 3rd floor to new furniture for
the living room.
Thanks to a donation from Nick
Palermo, Brother Kevin Palermo's father,
we now have a handsome drop ceiling
on the 3rd floor. This new ceiling covers
the old plaster one and it gives the 3rd
floor a more modern and attractive look.
Thanks must also be given to Terry
Churney and Scott Flinn who installed
this new ceiling. Plans are also under.way
for a new drop ceiling on th ~ttl-floor:Another project we have completed
is the rewiring of the 2nd and 3rd floor
hallways. The old and hazardous original
wiring was replaced with all new wire
and switches. Now the once inoperable
· hall lights have returned to service. Also
on the repair note, is the replacement
of new tiles in the basement and a new
water R,ump for the heater.
Finally,
one of the most recent
projects is that of new furniture for
the living room. Mike Wild picked out
this great 6 piece living room set. It
includes a sofa, 2 chairs (one a rocker),
a coffee table and 2 end tables.
Though we have completed many
projects and improvements there are
still quite a few that have to be done,
some of which will be incorporated
into the pledge program next term.
VARSITY BASEBALL
Allegheny College's 1982 Varsity
Baseball should consist of a number of
Fiji brothers. Nate Paskey, an Honorable
Mention All-President's Athletic Conference center fielder a year ago, will
return as a sophomore to the young
Gator squad.
Three-year letterman Eugene Tomassi
also returns as this years team captain.
Tomassi, an Honorable Mention AllConference third baseman as a sophomore was hampered by a shoulder injury

Sophomore Ed "Bucky" Badner is
another returning starter. Possessing a
smooth glove and solid bat, Badner as
the team's shortstop a year ago. The
versatile Badner is expected to move to
second base and the cannon-aimed
Tomassi expected to be among the
league's top shortstops and relief pitchers.
Also returning as sophomores will
be Paul Stanek and Kevin Baird. As a
freshman, Stanek saw action at second
and third base and also in the outfield.
Coming off of a summer knee injury,
he will be vying for a starters spot in the
"hat corner" of the infield. Baird saw
limited action at second base in his first
year. However, he is expected to compete

for an outfield spot in 1982.
First year Gators this season will
include sophomore's Gary Session and
Mike Ferris. Session, a hard hitting
catcher, will be top candidate for the
starting role behind the "dish" . Ferris,
who is also the owner of a Zime stroke,
will compete for a spot in the infield.
