November 21, 1970 was the date of installation of the
98th chapter of The Fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta. The
installation was the climax of 19 months of hard work by
Delta Colony of Phi Gamma Delta at MSU.
On Friday, November 20, all of the actives and pledges
of Delta Colony were pledged into the Fraternity of Phi
Gamma Delta in a ceremony at the First United Methodist
church in Starkville, Mississippi. The ceremony was con
ducted by William E. Hauser, President of the Archons; and
Dr. Tommy Williams, Section 14 Chief. Following the cere
mony,a smoker was held for all Fijis and their guests.
An all-Greek luncheon was held the next morning with
graduate brother Elliot Burnside(MSU '69) acting as Master
of Ceremonies. The highlight of the luncheon was a speech
by the former Student Association president Jerry Thames.
His speech was an analysis of the Greek system at MSU.
Following Mr. Thames, William S. Zerman spoke about fra
ternities looking at their principles and ideals on which they
were founded, and re-evaluating their position.
Following the luncheon was the initiation and indoctri
nation ceremonies. At these secret phrases of the installa
tion weekend, Louis A. Mangels (Indiana '56), was excel
lent in his role as the national fraternity's ritualist.
The next event was an all-Fiji banquet at which William
S. Zerman (Michigan '49), Executive Secretary was Master
of Ceremonies. The principal speaker was William E. Hauser
(Denison '50), Archon President. Others who spoke were
Ellis E. Busse (Chicago '31), Archon Secretary, Charlie
Graham (British Columbia), former Field Secretary, and
Delta Colony President Scotty Sumrall,(MSU '71).
The initiation weekend was concluded with a party for
all Fiji's, their dates, and all our Fiji guests.
We brothers of S M would like to thank all of the many
people who helped make our installation possible. We
would also like to say thanks for aU the letters, telegrams,
and phone calls wishing us well.
In April of 1969, the 16 original founders of Delta
Colony at MSU set their goal—a charter in 1970. Now that
we have achieved this goal, we have set another goalgetting a house. Now as this newsletter goes to press, this
goal is realized.ZM is well on the road to being the number
one Greek organization at MSU.

NEW FIJI PLEDGES
On behalf of everyone here at Sigma Mu chapter, I
would like to express a deep Gratitude to a certain group of
men. I refer to the following members of Delta Colony who
were unable to return to the campus for our installation
and initiation: Mike Farrow, Terry Hollowell, Mike
Humphreys,'Bev' Kennedy, and Ken Meredith. All of these
men were founders of Delta Colony and each worked very
hard getting our charter. We only wish that they could have
joined us for the installation. Our sincere appreciation also
The first pledge class of Sigma Mu Chapter of Phi
Gamma Delta has made many achievements under the
leadership of pledge trainers Phil Abernethy and Aubrey
Earnheart. Beginning with five, the class grew to its present
strength of nine during open rush.
The pledge class's social-service project was the aiding of
the Starkville Headstart Center. At the center the pledge
class painted the swing sets on which the children play and
also collected magazines for the children to use for educa
