BILL HAUSER TO SPEAK AT PIG DINNER
The sixty-sixth annual Norris Pig Dinner of the Xi Deuteron Chap
ter will be held in conjunction with the Cleveland (Eta) Graduate
Chapter on Thursday, April 29, at the Cleveland Athletic Club.
Featured as speaker this year will be Archon President William K,
Hauser (Denison '50), Brother Hauser has been very active in Frater
nity business and has been most recently the Educational Director of
the Fraternity prior to his election at the Cleveland Ekklesia in
August of 1970, He is Chairman of the Division of Humanities at
Atlanta Baptist College in Atlanta, Georgia.
Activities will get underway at the Athletic Club with cocktails
at 5:45 P.M. (cash bar, of course!) Dinner will follow at about 7:00.
The Cleveland Athletic Club is located at 111^ Euclid Avenue, and
parking is available across the street at the Statler Hilton.
The Norris Pig Dinner is the best opportunity of the year to get
to see old friends, xindergrads and grads alike. We are also hoping to
have as guests, if their busy schedules permit, Glevelanders such as
past Archon President Henry S. Brainard (CWhU/ •J.22) , Archon Secretary
Ellis E. Busse (Chicago '31), Ritualist Louis A. "Bud" Mangels (Indiana
'56), Curator of the Archives Bewitt R. Cogswell (CVjRU '15), and Gen
eral Counsel William R. Van Aken (Lafayette '34)*
This will also be an excellent opportunity to meet the new Xi
Deuteron Cabinet and freshmen, one of whom was heard recently to have
remarked, "Kiss the pig's what?"
Reservations, which are necessary, can be made by contacting Bill
Lapham c/o Ernst & Ernst, I3OO Union Commerce Building, Cleveland,
Ohio, 861-5000.
'We are looking forward again to another excellent turnout and hope
that you will be there to be a part of it!
HOUSE Il'^iPROVEMEINTS
During the past year, the men of Xi Deuteron in conjunction with
the Chapter Board of Advisors embarked on a program which greatly im
proved the physical appearance and condition of the house, both in
side and out.
For those of you who were unable to attend the annual fall smo
ker and see these improvements for yourselves, they included sand-
\r\n-2-
blasting and pointing of the brick on the exterior. On the interior
there was a new ceiling put in the second floor hall; a fresh paint
job and new carpeting for the dining room, living room, up and down
stairs hallways; and many new lighting fixtures in these areas.
Mention should also be made of :a group of ambitious undergrads
who stripped the black paint from the mohagony woodwork in the living
room and refinished it to its original lustre.
A great deal of credit for the organization of these improvements
must go to Richard G. Van Os Keuls '70. Dick received a great deal of
professional help and advice from Myron A. Pearce (GWRU '59). Mike is
a local architect who very gererously donated a great deal of time in
making this project successful.
Unfortunately the money budgeted for these improvements ran out
before the job was completely finished and there were no funds left
for the purchase of new light fixtures and other furniture for the
living room. If anyone would be interested or able to contribute toward
the purchase of any of the above items it would be greatly appreciated
and they can do so by contacting the Treasurer at the Chapter House
at 11317 Bellflower Road, Cleveland,Ohio 44106.
The Undergraduates greatly appreciate all the time and effort
put in by the Board of Chapter Advisors and would like to extend an
invitation to any graduates to stop by and pay us a visit.
pLEDGaS
As always, fall semester found the men of Xi Deuteron rushing
the new freshman on campus. Unfortunately, they encountered an apathy
among freshmen to pledge fraternities. First semester saw only one man,
Michael Douglas Ferrel '74 embark on the road of the Purple Pilgrim,
Mike is from Glenn Head, New York and he is planning to attend Medical
School upon graduation.
The entire fraternity system suffered during rush this year. A
total of 15 men out of a class of 275 freshmen pledged fraternities
during the fall semester. There are 4 houses on campus that are below
12 men total membership and we at Xi Deuteron are second largest now
with 23 active brothers and four pledges.
Second semester rush turned out a little better by getting four
pledges. They are Frank A. Ailes '73, from Waipahu, Hawaii; Roger
Thomas Kapostasy '73, from Fairport, Ohio; Richard Allen Ortman '74,
from Cleveland, Ohio; and Lee Walter Prazer '74, from Canton, Ohio.
FIJIS ON CAJyiPUS
Fijis at GWRU have always been leaders on campus and this year
is no exception.
With the abolition of Adalbert Student Council in
1970 to support the University Undergraduate Student Government (UUSG),
the role of Adalbert Class officers has increased in importance.
Fijis hold the top two positions with Dave Schanzlin as President of
\r\n-3the Senior Class and Mitch Henn as President of the Junior Glass,
Along with Dave Heald, Mitch is a representative in U.U.S.G.,
Phi Gam's are also leaders in the Fraternity system with Dave
Schanzlin as President of IFQ and Ross Pillari as Secretary-Treasurer
of IPG. Both are working hard in efforts of a merger of the Reserve
with the Case IFG. This is an important and necessary step, for
X4 Deuteron lost a number of fine prospective pledges from Case this
year when the Case Deans gave them a warning of our house not being
approved housing for Case students and that they could not live in
our house. This hang-up will be alleviated if the IFCs merge. It would
be helpful if- any graduate Fiji's with influence with the CWKU-admin
istration use this influence to help force a merger.
Three of Xi Deuteron's Brothers, Mitch, Dave, and Ross, were asked
by the University to be student hosts to the Board of Overseers on
March fifth. They will be served lunch at the Chapter house.
In sports, John Lubahn, Mickey Kapostasy, Jim Marsh, Pete Hall,
and Lee Prazer represented the Fiji's on the football team that was
merged this year. Stan Jonas played basketball for the school, while
Brother Lubahn and Pledge Prazer have begun practice for the Track
team. Mitch Henn and Bob Smith will be participating on the Golf team
and Baseball team respectively.
NEW OFi^'ICERS
The first week in February, Xi Deuteron installed the officers for
the coming year.
The President is Ross J. Pillari, a junior' from Lorain, Ohio. He
has served as Corresponding and Recording Secretary in the past two
yeais. Brother Pillari is an Economics major and is planning to attend
Graduate School for an MBA. He is also Secretary-Treasurer of IFG and
recently received the most improved scholarship award from the Cleve
land Graduate Chapter.
The Treasurer is Mitchell I. Henn, a junior from Geneva, Ohio.
Brother Henn has served as Corresponding Secretary and is presently
President of the Junior Class.
He is a Chemistry major and will attend
Dental School in 1972. Brother Henn is very active in University
government as a member of many committees and councils.
The Recording Secretary is George J. Yanok, a junior from Canton,
Ohio. Brother Yanok was Pledge Trainer last semester. He is a philo
sophy major and he has been on the varsity wrestling team. Last year
he was the wrestling heavy-weight champion of the University.
The Corresponding oecretary is James E, Gavacs, from HastingsOn-Hudson, New York, He is a junior biology major who plansto be an
anethesiologisto
i
T
Ohio.
The Historian is Paul F, Ricart, a sophomore from Canal V/inchestor,
Brother Ricart is a Chemistry major and hopes to attend Medical
School after graduation.
\r\nXI DEUTaKON'S GhADUATIUN CLASS OF 1970
The graduating class of 1970 was truly an exceptional one for Xi
Deuteron. Jack Vanek and Ken Lucas graduated Phi Beta Kappa and are
presently attending medical school at Rochester and Ohio State Univer
sity respectively, Tony Di Marco is attending medical school at Tufts
and Jim Conforto will attend CWRU's med school in the fall of '71.
Jim is presently doing research on eye proteins for the Bio-chem depart
ment here at Reserve.
Mike Magness and John Macoul are presently attending Law School at
CWRU and St, Johns respectively. Carl Alexander, presently working
for the city of Parma, is ready to attend John Marshall's School of
Law in the fall of '71. Dick Mc Nellie who was delayed by duty in the
National Guard and Terry Timblin who is in the Peace Corps also plan
to attend Law School.
Three grads are moving on towards PhD's. Ed Babcox is enrolled
, ?it the University of Akron in the Psychology Dept., Peter Bums is
studying Anthropology here at CWRU, Bill Weppner traveled to Oklahoma
to study enzyme bio-chemistry,
Barry Lehto (house Pres. '69-'70) and Dan Platano are teaching
at Mentor Jr. High. John Plimpton is employed by Pan American Airlines
in Washington D.G. and jeff Laaff is working for the General Electric
Company in Mass.
Indeed these brothers will go a long way and exemplify the ideals
learned here at Phi Gamma Delta. What are you doing? Know any interesting
stories about grads? Write us in care of the Pot Pourri and tell us
what your doing, so we can inform all the Brothers.
THANK YOU
A special thanks goes to Brother James Mulholland (WRU '16) who
in his letter declining an invitation to the Fall Graduate Smoker,
included many humerous events that occured at Reserve in his years
here, Jim resides at 20B South "1" Street, Lompoc, California.
