FUTURE EVENTS
Plans are now being made for the Norris
Pig Dinner to be held in either May or June.
It will probably be held the week end of the
Buick Open Golf Tournament. As soon as
final arrangements are made, all graduate
brothers will be notified by the Norris Pig
Dinner Chairman.
Graduation will be the week end of July
28-29.
The Class of 1957 will receive their
10-year pins the same week end. As in the
past, an open house will be held Friday night
of Grad week end for graduating brothers,
10-ycar men, members of classes having re
unions, and any graduates who may wish to
attend.
Presently, arrangements are being made for
a canoe trip this summer. Graduate brothers
will be notified of the exact date and location
in a future Delta Doin's.

The winter months also permitted ample op
portunity to hold two ski parties for both
sections.

its way in, preparation for the bulk of activ-
In May, most of the mothers of the brothers
and pledges from both sections came to Flint
for the festive "Mothers Day Week End."
Over sixty mothers arrived Saturday, attended
a dinner in Flint, and slept in the fraternity
house Saturday night before returning home
Sunday afternoon.
As the calendar progressed, June and July
each found the all-important "Rush Week
End." The rush parties provided a backbone
for selecting houseguests to live in the house
in the fall sections. Each section chose ap
proximately 40 of the rushees for their houseguest class. The summer months were also
utilized for the Norris Pig Dinner, special
pledge projects, membership initiations, and
the "Fiji Island Party."
As the fall sections began the new houseguests participated in all social functions with
the brothers.
The annual "Beta Bowl" and
the Fiji-ATO Halloween party helped interfraternity relations, as well as helping the
brothers to know the houseguests so that
selections of pledges was of the best quality.
The seventh day of November marked our
second year as a chapter of Phi Gamma Delta
and also the initiation of 17 pledges.
December closed the year with the annual
Christmas party. Approximately 25 under
privileged children were given gifts. Later

ities began. In April, the annual Fiji "Easter
Egg Hunt" was attended by over 300 children.
in the evening, brothers, alumni, and pledges
from both sections participated in a hall party
which joyously closed the year for the Alpha
Gamma Fijis.

How the Norris Pig Dinner Began
ALUMNI NEWSLETTER

The response to our Graduate Brothers
questionnaire has been quite good. However,
there are many alumni who have not re
turned the questionnaire. These are being
used to update our alumni file and to obtain
At the Class Day exercises of the University
of California in 1893, the Fijis took occasion
to rap the Dekes and Betas, who had monop

stunt consisted of bringing on the platform

a cord symbolic of the strangle-hold estab
lished by these two rival societies. Out of
this barrel tumbled a squealing pig. The pig
was captured and incarnated that night in
the Fiji stronghold on Dana street, where
Frank Norris staged an elaborate ceremony
worthy of the burnt offering. After the ban
quet, Frank Norris was inspired to propose
that they make this event a perennial ALUM
NI-CHAPTER pig dinner.

Becoming a Fiji
It was suggested in one of our questionnaires
that we mention if and how Alpha Gams of
the Delta Chapter could become Fijis.
Graduate brothers from our chapter CAN
BECOME PUTS, and the process is quite sim
ple. If any alumnus wishes to become a Fiji,
please request information about the neces
sary procedure from either the President or
Vice-President of the Chapter.
Your membership would be welcomed by
the chapter and the Fraternity of Phi Gamma
After the untimely death of Frank Norris
in 1902, it was most fitting that annual fes
tivity should be dedicated to him and there
after should be known in all Fijidom as the
"Norris Pig Dinner."
Our "pig dinner" will be held in either May
or June this year. We would like to have
you write us, telling which week end during
those months
would
be most convenient for
you to attend.

COMMUNITY SERVICE
SPORTS AT FIJI
by Denny Plackard
by Tom Davis
Community service this year at Phi Gam
is moving along at a rapid pace. Enthusiasm
shown by both the A-section and B-section
brothers has resulted in an extremely strong
program to this point.
A-section brothers started the ball rolling
by racking up 120 hours in house painting
and Cystic Fibrosis activities. B section re
sponded with 190 hours working on the Dort
Community House and various International

piled over 400 hours of service last section.
This section we have already redecorated
the Holly Presbyterian Community House and
with a few more projects being confirmed,
we hope to have another real strong section
for Community Service.
The future looks promising in the major
sports, but it will take an all-out effort in the
minor sports to assure Fiji possession of the
All-Sports trophy.
Winning this trophy,
coupled with our fine effort in community
service and our surprisingly high standing in
scholastics could make us a strong contender
for outstanding fraternity of the year at GMI.
