FIJIS OF ALL AGES CELEBRATE
CHRISTMAS DINNER
This past December, the brothers of Delta XI hosted
the graduate Fiji brothers chapter at the house for the
graduate brothers' annual Christmas dinner. Graduate
Jack Snook and undergraduate Andrew Keenan, with the
help of a few others, put together an extremely successful
Chirstmas dinner.
The evening began with the graduates and their
wives or dates, arriving at the house around 6:30 for predinner cocktails. To add to the festive occasion, the grad
uates brought ornaments for our Christmas tree. Around
7:30 dinner was served. We enjoyed a traditional Christ
mas dinner. After dinner an auction was held for various
Fiji memorabilia. The profits from this auction as well as
from the dinner, went to the undergraduate chapter. We
also had Christmas presents for everyone. The ladies
received beautiful poinsettas which the late Bob Cowden
arranged for us. The men received Fiji recognition pins

attendance brought one ornament, one of the many
highlights of the festive evening.
and decals.
This dinner was a great success. It came at a time
when the undergraduate brothers were trying to streng
then their relationship with the alumni. It served as a great
time for undergraduates to meet and talk to graduate Fijis.
We have started something new at Delta XI, and we hope
that this will be a traditional dinner in the future.

NAMED PURPLE LEGIONAIRE
We would like to congratulate Joe Gilmartin,'85, on
becoming our Purple Legionaire this semester. Joe was a
very successful president of Delta XI when he was an
undergraduate here. Like always, Joe is contributing a
great deal to our chapter administration. We all appreciate

THE NORRIS FIJI
President's Message
Greetings from Delta XI!
GRADUATES HELP LEAD THE WAY
FOR CHAPTER IMPROVEMENT
Although the chapter's new cabinet has only been in
place less than ten weeks, the progress we have made is
astounding. When we came into office, Delta XI was at
one of its lowest points in years financially and administra
tively, and now I'm happy to announce that the chapter
has taken a new direction, and inertia is beginning to work
In order to help strengthen our chapter here on cam
pus, in the community, and nationally, graduate brothers
have helped out as graduate advisors on a Board of Con
trol Advisors this semester. These graduates have helped
to bring new ideas to our chapter from their respective
chapters around the country. We meet 1-2 times a month
for us instead of against us.
The installation of a Chapter Board of Control: Steve
to discuss seven areas that we have concentrated on in
Blore (Delta XI, '84), Joe Todd (USC,'74), Mark Penskar
(Michigan, '74), Kurt Lauridson (Illinois, '59), George
Braun (Arizona'83), Dean Cozine(Nebraska,'61), Dennis
Drew (Berkeley, '80), and Kelly Christianson (Oregon,
'84), has helped us infinitely. Already this year, the chapter
has installed a committee system, participated in a Red
Cross CPR seminar, completed a University project, and
most importantly, garnered a pledge class of seven out
standing men.
The obvious big event this semester at Delta XI is the
imfamous Morris Pig Dinner. On April 8, graduate Fijis
from all the western states will converge on the chapter
house to renew old friendships and once more "Hail the
Pig!" A prime rib or salmon dinner, songs, awards, and
many college day friends await those who have the good
sense to revisit the chapter April 8. This is the first Pig
Dinner held at the house in years and we promise you will
leave in a blur — of renewed friendships, good food, and
of course, copious liquor. Please plan to attend both the
"Pig" and the Fiji Invitational Golf Tournament on the
eighth.
More good news; out of the ashes of the arson fire
which gutted the basement bar at the house, a new bar
has emerged. With work set to be completed by April 1,
the "Pig" will also serve as a "break in the bar" party. A new
our chapter administration. These seven areas each is led
by an undergraduate in the house. This system has
started to bring out more involvement by the active broth
ers of Delta XI. Six chairmen and two co-chairmen from
the undergraduate house have put lots of effort into the
seven areas we have concentrated on:
Social Service
Craig Hagglund,'89, Piedmont, CA
Our goal in social service is to do projects for the
community in which all members participate so that we
improve our relationship with our neighbors throughout
Berkeley. We have seen great improvement in this area
with "Hag" at the helm. On March 21, we are sponsoring a
blood drive here at Delta XI. This event promises to be a
successful one. Brother Hag also has been working on
setting up a tutoring program at a local elementary school
in Berkeley where we could help out as voluntary tutors.
Campus Activities
Dave Jasper,'89, Piedmont, CA
This area overlaps with social service, since both are
closely related. Dave organized a very successful house
project that occurred on Saturday, February 20th. Each
brother gave four hours of their time to help the Berkeley
Red Cross run an all-day CPR training marathon. The Red
Cross was so pleased with our effort that they have
pool table, pinball machine, piano, bar, walls, floor, and
offered to come to the house and train the brothers in CPR

its long life.
free of charge. Dave has also set up a correspondence
system with both the Berkeley and UC police in order to
set party guidelines and to improve relations with the
police department and the Greek system.
Delta XI has also taken steps to improve its graduate
relations. Mike Murphy (Graduate relations chairman)
has begun inviting old Delta Xls to dinner on Wednesday
nights to share their knowledge of the business world, Fiji
memories, bad jokes, and any other topic he might wish to
address. Many thanks to graduate Bill Ashton, who broke
the ice with an outstanding talk on March 9.So if you get a
call from the eloquent Mike Murphy, please make time to
come tell us undergrads what the "real world" has in store
for us.
Personally, I'd like to see every graduate Fiji in the
Bay Area at the Pig because we all know that more is
merrier, and even more so the old Fijis.
Graduate Relations
Mike Murphy,'88, Crinda, CA
The Graduate Relations chairman's duties and
objectives are to improve the relationship of the graduate
brothers and active brothers of our chapter. Mike has
aimed towards involving the graduate brothers in house
activities and honoring distinguished graduates for their
contributions and services to Phi Gamma Delta. Cur
recent Christmas dinner was a huge success, and Mike
hopes to continue improving our contacts with graduate
Fijis.
Fraternally,

BASEMENT BAR REBUILT AFTER
FIRE
Although the Fiji bar was gutted by arson fire on
January 7, repairs have been initiated and our bar should
be completely refurbished by April 1.
The fire was reported to the fire department by an
unidentified source, and was discovered by brothers of
Delta XI only when several Fijis returned from winter
break rugby practice to see the house surrounded by fire
engines. The fire was already out by then, with no injuries
or structural damage to the house. The chapter room,
although in close proximity to the bar, sustained no dam
age, and all our irreplacable Fiji artifacts remain intact.
The bar will be refinished with new panelling, tile
floors,a new bar and a redone pooltable, pinball machine,
piano, keg system and furniture. The fire was initially a
setback for the new cabinet; but in the end it proved to be
just another channel through which the Cal Fijis are dis
playing their renewed sense of pride in Phi Gamma Delta.
After the devastating fire(below) our bar is on its way to
being completed (above, right). Thanks to the many
alumni for their help.
GRADUATES (continued from page 2)
Scholarship
Ryan Walsh, '91, Lafayette, CA
Jon Hart,'91, Lafayette, CA
Ryan and Jon hope to continue the improvement we
have made in our overall house GPA by implementing
incentive money to individuals with improved GPA's and
to the top two GPA's. Graduate brother Ev Johnston of the
Housing Corp. has helped to set up this program.
Ritual Chairman
Andrew Keenan,'88, Palo Alto, CA
Andrew has set up a post-initiation program which
consists of four ritual lessons throughout the semester.
Andy's goals are to keep ritual an important facet of an
undergraduate's days at Delta XI. We have already held
three successful ritual lessons thus far.
Finances
Tom Power,'89, Palo Alto, CA
When this year's cabinet took office many past debts
were thrown in their laps. Tom has reorganized our house
bill collections and has succeeded in reducing some of
our debts. Delta XI looks to be on its way to financial
security.
Chapter Administration
Greg Baumann,'89, Santa Barbara, CA
Greg is providing excellent leadership this year as
President. Administration runs much more smoothly due
to Greg's efforts. Every task that he has tackled has been
successful, and here at Delta XI we hope Greg continues
to strengthen our chapter.

Treasurer's Update
The financial outlook for Delta XI is bright. Over the
past few years we have been accumulating a debt. My

as a handbook for future treasurers we hope that this
situation will never occur again.
Delta XI is a strong chapter that can overcome any
obstacle whether it be scholastic or financial. With the
help of a very cooperative Housing Corps, International
Fraternity, and our Graduate Brothers we can come
through this with flying colors. Hope to see all of you in the
near future.

FIJIS AGAIN A POWER IN CAL
SPORTS
Fiji brothers again represent California sports in full
force. Twenty-five brothers participate in intercollegiate
sports, two of which have competed in international com
petition representing the United States.
"i!
Water Polo—Six Fijis helped to carry the Bears to another
National Championship last fall. Starter Joel Thomas
used his incredible speed to lead his team to victory in
the national competition. Three powerful juniors,
i
Sandy Ewing, Daron Craft, and Rick Keeley, proved
to be valuable contributors throughout the long sea
son. Redshirt freshman Polo Bear Brian Bunch is
coming on strong while starting for the B's team,
paving the way for his redshirt brother Todd "Junior"
Bunch to follow.
Swimming—Joel Thomas continued his success by
winning first place in the 100 yards freestyle and as
anchor for the 4 x 100 freestyle relay in the Pac-10
championships. Joel will head to Austin, Texas, this
summer for the Olympic trials. All the Delta XI Fijis
are hoping Joel will participate in the Olympics in
South Korea representing our own red, white and

Rugby—Once again Fijis are leading the California rugby
team as it plows through league play undefeated.
All-American captain Gary Hein provides international
competition experience when he steps on the playing
field. Two other Fijis on the starting team include two
potential All-American locks Tom Midura and Dave
Simosen and, from down under, Australian Chris
Bachelet has also provided excellent leadership. Jun
ior Rob Selna has opened some eyes with his play on
the 2nd team. Moving up from the fourth and third
team are quality players Pete Sonsini, Steve Peter
son, and Buddy Rowell. Freshman rugger Sean
Hoover has also proven himself to be a future con
tributor in the rugby program.
Baseball—Lefthander Christopher(Bit) Beagle and catcher
Bob (theBobster) Frati may well be a future combina
tion in the Bears rotation. Chris's hard work and
determination is beginning to pay off while Bob has
decided to redshirt this season. We all anticipate
Chris and Bob to make headlines for the Bears in the
next years.

IN MEMORIAM: ART BELL
Our oldest living Delta XI Fiji Brother, Art Bell, passed
away peacefully on Dec.30, in his home in Oakland, OA,a
few blocks from where he was born 99 years ago. Art Bell
/as an 80 year member of Phi Gamma Delta, graduating
vith the class of 1911. Mr. Bell was a graduate of Berkeley
High School and, after his undergraduate years at U.C.
Berkeley, married Bessie Beasley Bell and lived with his
family in Piedmont and Oakland for many years. Mr. Bell
founded Bell Carter Foods, Inc. in Berkeley during the
Depression and remained active in the olive packing firm
until 1980 when the company moved its location. His two
grandsons,Tim and Jud Carter, currently run the company.
All of the present undergraduates were able to meet
Art at our 100th anniversary Norris Pig Dinner last spring.
It was an exciting experience to meet a man who joined
Phi Gamma Delta only a few years after Frank Norris did.
Art was happy to meet all of the present undergraduates,
and the name "Art Bell" is definitely still highly regarded
here at Delta XI. If any graduate brothers have any stories
%
to share please send them in to the chapter house in
Berkeley. Memorial gifts may be made to the Arthur H.
