MISSISSIPPI STATE UNIVERSITY
Parents Day
Letter From The President
With the spring semester already half over,
many things have happened that have kept the
chapter very active during this period. A new com
mittee system went into effect at the beginning of
the year in hopes to get the chapter involved in
more events, both inside the chapter and out, and
has already brought many changes and additions
to the chapter. A Pig Dinner for graduates and
Mississippi Fijis, a parents day for all Sigma Mu
parents, an open house for the people of the sur
rounding area, a twice a month newsletter to all
of the Phi Gamms in the state, and the best sports
season ever, are just a few of the things that have
been worked on or accomplished during the early
months of 1972.
The Sigma Mu Chapter at Mississippi State
University has come such a long way during its
young existence. Hard work, much time, and a great
deal of money have amounted to build a chapter
that all of the Fijis in this state can be very proud
SPRING 1972
Sigma Mu's first Parents Day was held on
March 25th and turned out to be a most successful
and rewarding event. The attendance by both par
ents and brothers was outstanding and the overall
response could not have been better.
The day began with a luncheon at the Holiday
Inn in Starkville, highlighted with a speech by
Dr. Thomas H. Williams, our Section Chief. Dr.
Williams' talk created much interest and discussion
among the parents and hopefully convinced them
of the relevance of our fraternity. After the lunch
eon, many parents attended the annual spring
game on the Mississippi State campus, which was
then followed by an open house at the Fiji house.
With the overwhelming success of our first
Parents Day we hope to continue this event in the
years to follow. The brothers of Sigma Mu Chapter
would like to thank all of the parents and especial
ly Dr. and Mrs. Williams for making our first
Parents Day a memorable one.

With the Pig Dinner just around the comer it
is my hope and the hopes of this chapter that the
New IFC President
Phi Gamms in Mississippi will come look at our
Elections for new Interfraternity Council of
ficers were recently held last month and the bro
thers are proud to announce that Franklin Myers,
our Corresponding Secretary, was elected President.
Franklin is a sophomore from Petal, Mississippi,
and has been very active in the I.F.C. government
chapter and see just what has been done and where
we are headed. Please make a special effort to at
tend the dinner and learn something of this new
chapter at "State" and help us prove once again
the saying, "Not for College Days Alone".
Fraternally,
Greg Mann
President
for the past two years. The brothers know that he
will do an excellent job throughout the next year.
This marks the second time in the last three years
that the Fijis have been represented by an I.F.C.
President.

Spring Pledge Class
This semester's pledge class began with three
outstanding men and has grown to a current seven
in strength. The class just recently finished its
kservice project, an Easter egg hunt for the Critz
'street Mental Retardation School, and is now
working on its money making project for the chap
ter. Along with these two projects, the pledges will
also do some type of service for the house, which
involves either purchasing something for the house
or working on the actual house itself. The brothers
are proud of this Spring semester's pledge class
and know that they will go on to even greater
accomplishments before the semester is over.
Number One!
This past fall semester the Phi Gams at Mis
sissippi State were again number one in grades in
the Greek System. The overall average was 2.95
on a 4.00 scale, which was the highest grades in the
history of the chapter. The actives finished with
a 3.021 and the pledges with a 2.777, highest
among all pledge classes at State. This marks the
sixth straight time the Fijis at State have finished
number one and we are hoping to make it seven
this semester!

Fiji Sports
The Phi Gamms here at MSU have just closed
out the most successful season in their short his
tory. The FIJI five compiled a 7-3 record which
was good enough to make it to the playoffs. They
lost a heart-breaker there to Pi Kappa Alpha. The
score was 35-34. That same Pike team went on to
the finals before losing. We are proud of the fine
showing this year and next year promises to be
even better.
Volleyball season is around the comer and we
will field a very spirited team. Enthusiasm is also
high for Softball and tennis later on in the semes
ter.
