PIG DINNER
Sigma Mu's 4th annual Norris Pig Dinner, which was held on
March 31st at the Holiday Inn in Columbus, turned out to be a
great success. About 58 people attended, including actives,
graduates, and special guests. The final issue of the Bulldog
Fi.ii. which will be published in a couple of weeks, will contain
a feature article on the highlights of the Pig Dinner along with
pictures taken.
COAST PARTY
During the weekend of April 6-8, about fifteen brothers
and their dates en.ioyed a fantastic time on the Mississippi
Gulf Coast, staying at the Rovmtowner. Although the weather
was rainy most of the time, everyone still found a chance to go
to the amusement park, where it v/as reported everybody got sick,
and to play football on the beach. Saturday night the Fijis and
Lambda Chis went in on a party and dance. David Gaddis, chair
man of the social committee, should be commended for arranging
the plans for the weekend, which was a great time for all.
BROTHERS TO MARRY
Several brothers have announced plans to be married this
summer. Steve Edwards is marrying Miss Kathryn Minard on June
2nd. Ronnie Rutland will wed Miss Tanya Rayborn also on June
2nd. Thomas Wiley will wed Miss Mary Coburn on May 20th. And
Jan Clark will marry Miss Judy Mangrum on June 23rd.
SERVICE PROJECTS SUCCESSFUL
Sigma Mu's latest community service projects turned out
to be highly successful. Burke Fisher, chairman of the campus
and community service committee, coordinated the projects and
with the help.of the brothers did a great job. On Friday, March
23rd, the Fijis replanted about twenty plants in the containers
along the main business district of downtown Starkville. The
Starkville Daily News gave us a real good write-up and also
published a picture of the plantings. In the past several weokr.,
the People's Bank and several local merchants have been kind
enough to write us and commend us for our work.
On March pFth,
we all left the house about 8:30 to start on our annual cleanup
of Old West Point Road, which runs about 10 miles. Although it
was windy that morning and eventually started raining that after
noon, there were about 200 trash bags of garbag© collected. Since
service projects have always oeen a major aspect of Sigma Mu,
we were pleased to have been highly s\jccessful nn
i.t-o
worthwhile projects.
SCHOLARSHIP
The scholarship committee, headed by Bob Stimson, has also
been hard at work this semester.
This is one of our new
committees, and it has been involved in arranging files of each
brother's grades and also collecting old tests and notes. Their
latest endeavor to encourage scholarship among the brothers has
been to have a beautiful plaque built to recognize those brothers
who graduate with a 3"5
better qualj.^y point average

One committee that is often times overlooked, hut one that
has contributed greatly to the grow."!)
semester is the publicity committee.
chairman, the publicity committee has
attention campus-wide. Several signs
of Sigma Mu this past
With Porter Robinson as
gained Sigma Mu much
have been painted inclu
ding one welcoming TVS television network who came to State to
televise the State-Vanderbilt basketball game. During the
weekend of the Pig Dinner, the committee painted a sign welcoming
Fijis and this weekend painted a sign welcoming former P.O.W.'s
to State for the annual Maroon-White game. Another highlight
of this committee is that of sending information about each of
the new initiates to their local county and city papers to be
published. With the work of this committee, the Fijis are
indeed well-known.
SUMMER'PLANS
Sigma. Mu's work will not end when this sem.ester comes to
a close bxit will continue into tne aummer months.
There are
plans for several rush parties, including one in Jackson on
the reservoir and also in various other areas of the state where
the brothers live. The committee has recently sent out letters
to various high schools and junior colleges inquiring about
outstanding students. We would like to ask any of you graduates
to please be thinking of any outstanding students in your area
who might be be recommended and send their names in. This summer
about four delegates will attend the Fiji Academy in Kentucky and
hopefully will bring home many awards for the chapter.
BROTHER EXCELS AS ACTOR
Of the various fields of each of the brothers, Ray Jordan
has established himself as an experienced actor. Recently Ray
held one of the leading roles in Thorton Wilder's play "The
Matchmaker", v/hich was presented by the Union Program Council
and Blackfriars of M.S.U. as a Smorgasbord dinner theater, There
were packed attendences for each performance, and we congratulate'
Ray on a fine job.
