During
the
spring semester of
last year a decision
was made to add
Brotherhood to the
committee structure

able, goals were the key points of the
meeting,from House Maintenance to
I.M.S. Perhaps the highlight of the re
treat was the tremendous cheering
accompanied by cries of-"We want the
Condon Cup!"Lambda hasnot won this
award since 1977,and everyone agrees
it is high time to reverse that trend of
apathy.
Overall, we believe the improve
ment is quite evident. As we continue
to improve, we are certain we can at
tain our goals and win the Condon
Cup!

stronger bonds between all classes,
making the house function in a
stronger and more efficient manner.
Although Brotherhood Committee is
only entering its second semester of
existence we believe we've come along
way towards accomplishing our goal
by organizing special activities and
supporting the efforts of those outside
the committee.
Since the installation of the
committee we have organized allhouse road trips to various sporting
events such as the Halloween night
Colts vs. Broncos game, set up special
events like the Fiji Feud, Christmas
Caroling and the Fiji Iron Man compe
tition. While these activities help to
bring the house together we feel that it
is through encouraging supportfor the
efforts of individual brothers that we
have done the most.Forexample,in the
past semester Fiji has played a large
part in creating a university sponsored
LaCrosse team under the leadership of
brothers Phil Ratzer and Dan Freeman.
Fiji can also boast of having brother
David Kimbell as DePauw's Old Gold
King or about the accomplishments of
All-Star Team intramural football
players Jason Erb and Andrew
Bogdan.
The list of brothers deserving no
tice for achievement on campus is too
exhaustive for a single article so we at
the Committee plan to keep the gradu
ate membersinformed through a series
iiTi
of articles in upcoming issues. Until
that time we would like to thank the

graduates who turned up for Old Gold
and invite all to stop by the house and
visit.

continue our long
involvement
with
such groups as Phi Beta Kappa, Mortar
Board, and DePauw Academic Coun
cil, on which brother John Kneisley
chairs the Committee for the Expan
sion of DePauw Curriculum. Further
more, many brothers currently hold
such prestigious scholarships as Na
tional Merit Scholarships and Presi
dential Rector Scholarships (the high
est awarded by DePauw), as well as re
ceiving grants for research such as
senior Pete Young's three month grant
from the Eli Lilly and Co.
But, beyond the accomplishments
of individuals, we are focusing on
helping to raise the CPA's of the broth
ers who need it most, and thus raising
the CPA of the Chapter as a whole. The
first phase of this thrust has been the
revitalization of our upperclassman
scholarship program. Part of this pro
gram monitors active's grades so that
any problems can be resolved quickly.
Also, our in-house tutor program has
been expanded to include almost every
major at DePauw to further aid our
members in attaining the highest pos
sible scholarship. The pledge scholar
ship program has been organized by
Greg Morical to help our freshmen
make the transition to the rigors of
college life. As well as scheduled study
tables, each pledge has an upperclass
man study buddy in order to gain
experience. Finally, the pledges have
regular meetings with a group of aca
demic advisors to aid in specific course
problems, course selection, study hab
its, etc. This program has worked well
in the f)ast, with last year's pledge class
achieving the second highest CPA of
any pledge class on the DePauw cam
pus.
If enthusiasm and dedication to
academics are any indication. Lambda
Chapter will soon emerge as a leader in
all aspects of academic life at DePauw.
Fraternally,
John Kneisley

DePauw in the annual pre-Monon Bell
intramural football game. Jason, too,
will be back next year to coach and play

Speaking of football. Phi Gam had
an excellent season finishing a strong
third in our division. Led by senior cocaptains Phil Ratzer and Dave Kimbell,
we reached the last game of the season
Up,
with a shot at post-season play only to
lose in a tight match 13-7. With quarter
back Bill Bach returning along with
most of our defensive unit, we should
be strong again next year.
We are also looking forward to
continued success this year as our
strongest sports, swimming and soc
cer, quickly approach.
