FIJI DEFENDS I.M.
CHAMPIONSHIP
INTO THE NEXT DECADE
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Greetings from all actives at Theta
Deuteron to all esteemed alumni!
To update the goings-on of the house,
it suffices to say that the atmosphere at
Ohio Wesleyan has changed since 1869,
since 1950, and since 1980. As we ap
proach a new decade. Phi Gams have been
forced to adjust to the times. We no longer
have keg parties; instead we have relied on
the new, creative ideas generated by our
stellar social chairmen. Randy Myers '92
and Josh Keman '91.
Additionally, Ohio Wesleyan's rising
scholastic reputation and standards have
necessitated a resurgence in academics in
the house. During the spring semester of
1989, Phi Gam actives enjoyed the largest
overall grade point average jump of any
Greek affiliation at OWU.
On the athletic front. Phi Gams now
hold posts on the OWU men's swim team,
(Rob Ferguson '91, Derek Hynn '92) and
the men's lacrosse team (Cap Pahl '91). We
were intramural champs in basketball and
soccer last year as well.
In keeping with the new spirit of Phi
lanthropy nationwide. Phi Gamma Delta
has been at the forefront of social services
for the past few years. Committee head,
Stacy Adams '92, is performing a tremen
dous job.
In closing, the FIJI house at OWU
welcomes correspondence and visits from
Phi Gam brothers ofpast years. You are our
resources.
Entering the '89 fall semester, the Phi
Gam intramural squads have had a great
amount of pressure on them to continue
their winning tradition. After sweeping the
spring season last year in basketball and
indoor soccer, all the opposing squads have
been fighting to take away the champion
ship of Theta Deuteron.
Although, the football team was not
quite as successful as we had hoped, they
ended their season with a hard fought vic
tory over SAE. The inspiring play shown
by many of the underclassmen gives us an
optimistic outlook for the next fall season.
As President John F. Kennedy said in
The soccer team, on the other hand, has
an address years ago, "It is time to move
enjoyed a perfect season.Playingunderthe
leadership of the seniors, the underclass
men have been holding their own on the
field. Entering the play-offswith a 6 and0
record, the Piuple Marauders have two
tough games ahead in order to win the
Intramural Championship.The spiritof the
house is truly behind them. Regardless of
forward with zest and zeal into a time of
unprecedented change and uncertainty."
That quotation rings true once again as we
look forward to a new decade. Striving for
excellence, the Phi Gam realizes that this
brotherhood is not for college days alone!

"DOING SOME GOOD" IN DELAWARE
The community service performed by
Theta Deuteron this year has been tremen
dous. Coming back to school with several
goals in mind, the community service
committee set several goals to improve our
community involvement. One of these
goals involves regaining the prestigious
philanthropy award.A secondvitalgoal is
to involve more of the house in individual
projects. So far, contribution of time from
the brothers has been significant. Hope
fully, we can keep our goals in sight and
slowly work toward regaining the award.
FIJI community service projects this
year include the Red Cross Blood Drive,
Meals on Wheels, assisting Mr Bennington

Some upcoming projects this semester
include a sale for Mothers and Students

to raise money for a local Delaware charity.

ANNOUNCING THE PLEDGE
CLASS OF 1990
WELL PREPARED MEN
The pledge class of 1990 consists of
seventeen studious and well prepared men.
They have joined Phi Gamma Delta with
high aspirations, seeking the chapter's
consent as brothers. We have a great range
of personality in our present brotherhood
and this new addition will benefit the great
ness of FIJI. After much coaxing, our
pledge class president. Bill Day, was
elected President of Junior Interfratemity
Council. The assets represented by these
men have been noticed by the house and the
campus as well. We have already estab
lished a foothold in our community by
incorporating the pledges into social serv
ice activities such as Meals on Wheels and
the blood drive. These men are bright and
athletic representing our school in their
respective sport.
We have the finest the freshman class
has to offer. Honestly, I haven't seen a class
as motivated and responsible in three years
since my pledge class. The brothers are
taking care of the pledges offering that
helpful hint when needed. It is up to my
that the exceptional brotherhood that I am
now beginning to feel a part of was evident.
I knew there was more to FIJI than any
brothers and myself to set up standards and
criteria which must be followed although
tainted by endurable hardships. We don't
haze we educate.
other house I had visited, and that is why the
incredibly diverse and qualified pledge
class of this year made FIJI their choice. I

class and the active members as means of

Though we may encounter hard times
in the course of pledging, I know the bene

overflowing. I can say this already from the
comparatively small amount of experience
I have as a pledge. I can already feel the

pledgeship. So far it has proved to be an
incredible experience which I am told will

who, as veterans of what lies ahead of us,

brothers and I will encounter in the next few

entire pledge class when I say that I have no

Since experience is the only way one

with the insincerity of words. I can only

and pride in my decision to pledge Phi
