Deferred Rush evolved from the
concern that too much emphasis was
being placed too soon on Rush and
Greek life in general. "The DePauw

of the school year. They thought aca

Rush," Interfraternity Council (IPG)
Secretary John Tuhey, junior, ex
plained. "They also wanted the fresh
men to be able to get a better look at the
Greek living units."
The change in Rush also brought
about changes regarding Greek mem
bers'association with freshmen. For six
weeks until Rush, no freshman is al
lowed into any fraternity house at all,
unless it is for a school or IFC spon
sored event. Also, no Greek upperclassmen may enter an all-freshman

due to our tremendous graduate sup

and enthusiasm amongst the under

key motto down here is "unity".
Unity has made Lambda Fiji the
best fraternity house at DePauw Uni
versity. The intensity has been out
standing for such a small number of Phi
Gams on campus (before Rush). We
have accomplished more in the month
of September than in many entire se
mesters. We can thank unity (and
brother Scott Richards '92) for raising
over $2,000 for Putnam County
Operation Life during our 3rd Annual
Fiji Volleyball Tournament. We can
thank unity for one of the most compre

history. We can thank the unity of the
brothers for staying up late for a week

new carpet on all floors and revamping
the women's bathroom. I would like to
sincerely thank the brothers for their

"This will be a key factor in attracting
good freshmen to pledge our house."
"It also demonstrates our leader

added. "Fiji is the only fraternity on
campus with four Rush counselors."
But the brothers of Phi Gamma
Delta are not alone in their efforts to
have a successful Rush. Letters of
recommendation from graduate broth

chapter a head start before Rush. "I

we've been getting from the graduate

helps us to know which are the good

"Briefs on Brothers"
Saturday, April 22 arrived and
hopes were high at Fiji because today
was Little 500. Greg Shapleigh started
the race and ju mped outto a quick lead.
But mental errors proved to be the
team's downfall. Although it had the
fastest team lap average, penalties
caused the team to finish second, less
than a half-lap behind Delta Chi.
Rounding out the team were Brian
Thornburg '69, Dave Kaliser, John
Broyles, and John Kneisley.
Even though the team finished
second,the riders won many individual
honors. Shapleigh was named to the
first All-Star team,as well as having the
fastest lap and fastest lap average in
the race. Broyles and Kneisley made
the second All-Star team, with the latter
receiving the Mental Attitude Award.
Next spring, besides the race, Fijis
will dominate in all areas of Little 500.
